  • #115 After starting to build our DIY EMT electrical metal conduit (1.25") greenhouse two years ago, we are finally back to completing this project. We're actually glad we didn't finish it then, as we would not have had the time to learn all that we have about greenhouses since that time. We would have regretted doing/not doing some of the things then, in light of what we'll be doing now.
We readily admit we are not experts at this, but doing our best to install based on all that we have read or watched on CZcams (Ha! Don't believe everything you see on the internet) and in line with our budget. Hopefully, it all works!
In this video we complete an edwall and some other work. The past several weeks have not been super productive on the greenhouse, mostly because of the weather. But if we can get a run of good weather, and a critical delivery from the greenhouse supplier, we hope to finish in the next two weeks.
Background on the project: Our farm homestead came with metal pipes in the ground from a former 16' x 50' hoop house. It also had water lines run from the farm well (which also needed to be restored) and a 60 amp electric service. In the first video we installed the 1.25" EMT conduit that serves as the frame. In future videos we'll frame the end walls, run electric, and get the plastic cover on in time for winter.
Each rib or section of the greenhouse consists of three 10' pipes, no cutting. They are joined by stock EMT connectors. The two outer angles are 117.3. The ridge angle is 125.4. Sides are 6' tall. Just over 10' to the ridge. 16' wide.
Ultimately, this will be a double wall plastic film greenhouse.

Feeding yourselves while protecting the environment by reducing the need for energy and trying to use what earth offers us? As a Christian, that's out mission! Keep going, I'm planning something similar once we have ground to build on. Greetings from a brother!

He smiled. And yes, time goes by far too fast. Was just thinking last night of how much younger he is in some of our earlier videos, and then on this project he is picking up a 4x6 beam by himself. Happy Easter to you and yours!

Yes, the weather has been crazy this spring and thanks - and thank you for your kind words about our family - we're biased of course, but couldn't agree more.

In the winter you’d have heat cells to use elsewhere from the greenhouse too. It would be a short enough trip to a shop, tractor shed or outbuilding.

If it gets really cold in there and you don't get enough heating coming out of the earth battery , all you need to do is to add to your system a solar heating system. Nice work, can't wait to see results

Hi...i have a tip, most wiggle channel can handle two layers of plastic and wire. No need to run two channels.

I think adding that cleanout is a great idea. Hopefully, you will never need to use it, but just like insurance, you never need it uless you don't have it.

Ok, I saw in the other video where you didn't think you would need it because the other end was open. I was hoping that you didn't pull it out.

Hi, did you decide to go for an airflow heating system over a sealed water convection system because your heating element is above the bottom level of the piping? I like the idea of using a water convection system off a rocket stove system, however in this setup the stove would need to be below the pipes, or a heat exchanger would need to be installed to move the heat to where it is needed.

Why didn't you dig a sump pump well down about 2 feet below your lowest pipe so you could pump it out if it ever gets water in there?

Did you have to grind down the lips on those EMT connectors at the joints so the plastic would tear on it?

Hi, being in NC, why do you want a greenhouse? So WARM down there! Standard GH would work fine for most winter plants? No?

Students at Hofstra University on Long Island will be holding a demonstration demanding that a statue of Thomas Jefferson be removed. The demonstration is scheduled at noon on Friday March 30th which is Good Friday. Not one Christian in the lot. Otherwise they would have chosen a better time. I will be at church Good Friday.

Dale Church Sorry. I guess the good news is that when you begin taking the time to video, edit, and upload your own projects, you’ll already know how you don’t want to do it. Less talk and more do.

John, we sometimes wonder why people need to make negative comments about videos they weren't forced to watch. Free market - you're more than welcome to build your own greenhouse and make videos with little to no talking - and perhaps you'll get many more views, etc. God bless. All the best with your projects.
