I felt it in my gut when he cut the edges so short! Think of the future dude - fold and tack it! And I agree that a dummy liner is a bit sus - it hangs on a wall. You don’t see the back normally. What are you trying to cover up?

Do you ever get a request to restore an old oil painting that has so many losses, so much abrasion, so much craquelure, that you have to refuse the commission because it is impossible?

It's REALLY annoying when the commercials are longer than the actual video!!

Would be much better if you talked and explained what you are doing. The soundtrack is distracting. The movements are manic because you have speeded things up.

Out of interest, if an oil painting from the 1970s were badly overpainted in the 1990s, also in oils, would there be possible to remove the overpaint, or is that all too close in date?

For those who overpainted this: may God forgive you! (and set you in painting and drawing for centuries, then centuries more of conserving all the lost paintings of the world which are saved to heaven)

Mid eighteenth century, I would say, unless its a later copy.

I’m surprised that the photograph doesn’t get affect by the chemicals etc.

I just realized that the process of cleaning a painting is also the discovery process to fully understand what needs to be done for the painting. I was just enjoying watching it get cleaned when I realized how much more a cleaning is then a brighter surface.

It's like going through the world seeing with cataracts to the first glimpse of the sky after the cataract surgery is complete

You have brought Mrs Calvert back to life; she has beautiful eyes with a very kind and warm expression in this portrait. I think Henry's portrait of Mrs Calvert is beautifully and delicately executed. Her skin is luminous, her eyes lively and expressive and her nose is more refined without all the grime, dirt, smoke and yukky drab varnish. She reminds me of one of Dicken's kind hearted character's in his books. It is very sad that Henry may have been weak in health but he was herculean in managing to paint wonderful paintings with only one lung and the many illnesses related to this condition. Henry looks handsome, sensitive and pensive in his portrait but there is courage and determination behind this delicacy. I am so happy you have bought this artist and his portrait of Mrs Calvert to our appreciation and attention.

I love the pansies/ johnny-jumps in her hair. I shall now go research what meaning they had in those days. Edit: Pansies it seems, are associated with telepathic thoughts of/ with one’s lover. No wonder she’s smiling. I’d venture the colors of her dress reflect the purity of body and spirit of the love they share, as these are often the colors we see Mother Mary wearing.
