    I don't think I had realized till now, that you can really see the pattern of the canvas in his face and and as you touch up areas, that pattern seems to disappear. I think that really brings the life back to his face too.

    It is really obvious now why the owner wanted to burn the repainted portrait. So glad you got the chance to undo the over paint and restore it correctly.

    I will like definitively long retouching session with some nice music paired in (Mozart's Elvira Madigan maybe?) It's great to see the change for a better after so many small touches!

    I'm amazed at how excited I get when I see a new Regency gent video appear! Besides the fascination of watching you work, I'm a major aficionado of the Regency Period. You're right about that historical time, I doubt there's been a more exciting, forward-moving era in Western civilization. Your Gentleman nicely epitomizes it-a middle-class success on the rise. I'm so glad to see him reemerge from obscurity.

    Cleaning a painting is always a very interesting process and the result can be surprising. But retouching is amazing, can be a ton of work, but there is someting magical about puting the old painting together back again. Well done James

    Your work is astounding. I wish I could have become an art restorer myself. I love to paint and have great passion for old masters, but unfortunately, I'm colour blind (.__.)
    Yours has become my favourite restoration channel. I am amazed at the meticulous care you take at all steps of the process. It is always a joy to see a new video from you popping up. Greetings from Paris!

    In these times your videos are a great therapy and so many thanks. The detail and care you take enhances the art history education so much.
    A quick point on retouching is - do you work to a map or plan (obviously to some extent so that you have colours ready) but more overall.

    With a painting like this that has been severely over cleaned and over painted how many hours in total does it take to retouch? I think you said today’s was at least 7 or so hours. What do you do to break up the time for your eyes to rest a bit?

    • @Bloomfield_Art_Restoration
      @Bloomfield_Art_Restoration  Před 8 měsíci +5

      It depends really this one will be getting up to 14 or 15 by the time I’m finished. I take breaks and look out the window to rest my eyes or jump into a different job for a while say frame repair or something a little more manual …

  • @man_made

    Looks like it says Sant. Could it be a later painting? If so could it be James Sant?

  • @ErikBongers
    @ErikBongers Před 8 měsíci +3

    There's still something off about the left eye (they eye on the right side of the painting). The bottom right shadow on the eyeball and the central highlight on the bottom eyelid make it look like there's a nick/notch/dent in that eyelid, while it should look like a smooth curve around a smooth spherical eyeball. I don't know how much of that is original.

      I watch his videos too.... and they're just different.
      He's certainly more practiced with the video editing and has a more standardized video format, but I think that's just a matter of CZcams experience.
      As for their restorations.... you can clearly see it's different styles but both equally skilled.
