Welcome to part 1 of restoring The Doctor a 17th Century portrait attributed to John Ryley 1646 - 1691. This painting is from a private client and is in for a clean. Something tells me this isnt going to be straightforward and things take a turn as the cleaning develops.

I am delighted to see you have hit your stride with these videos!! Love how you tie history and restoration together. Makes your videos unique! I am a big fan, keep ‘em coming! 🥰
With the title like this I'm expecting the Tardis under old repainting.
I've just been binging a load of Dr Who watchalongs ... this title, and then after watching, this comment both completely threw me! 😅
My first thought too 😂
This doctor comes across as a nice practical dignified no nonsense man The subtlety of the message of him being a doctor on the book is good - it says what it needs to say -nothing flamboyant - no ‘magical’ medical instruments I bet he was very re assuring for his patients
So many details lost in the varnish discoloration. I can't wait to see this one in its full glory!
You're definitely my favourite restorer at this point. Can't wait to follow the journey with this one. Cheers!
It's always exciting to see the darkness lifted from these portraits. You are truly a patient man to practice this complex craft.
What joy...
I like your tone of voice and that there is no music in the background!! 👍🏼👍🏼
'Patient' love it
Buckled up! 🌙
Great painting to restore. Looking forward to seeing your work.
Nice to see the new project -- looks like a good one.
Please more Videos 😉
For those who enjoy watching but don't do work anything like this. When a solvent swab hits an adhesive, varnish or whatever material you're trying to remove, it goes from being like a dry nail varnish, through a dry jam consistency, to honey and then is cleaned off. Of course every material proceeds differently, but you can really feel that difference between dry, gummy and then gone. So satisfying to feel that solvent working and see what comes away.
Why did YT not show your channel when I was looking for Art Restoration Grrrr!!!! Nevermind loving how the channels growing, Patreon membership is in now. An early Birthday pressie for me, but confusion as to why I asked for this 😂🎉
Im not sure it didnt come up for me either, maybe I need to add more tags or better video SEO ? thanks for letting me know though
I'd be curious to know the COST involved in restoring the painting.
I once avoided a painting I loved because I knew enough to know it needed a full restore and figured I couldn’t afford it.
I think the cost for full restauration of this picture is arround 1000 to 1800 pounds ? 🤫🙂
Maybe it was rolled and hidden in a knockwurst. 😂
Those gloves look quite heavy duty - more like riding gloves than ‘social’ gloves So perhaps again at a nod at his status with having a house with stables? And also subtle hint at a vigorous practical man who rides a horse rather than using a carriage day to day
Off topic but I saw short of 3 monks overpainted. Is there a detailed video? Thanks
Sorry not a full video of this one - it was before I started on CZcams and just recorded the work in stills ..
A lot of channels also have sponsors ..Im sure that would helpful for you as well.
I’m glad to see you got rid of the rock music intro, it didn’t work with the theme of your channel. If you want music with your channel I’d recommend neoclassical, or just plain classical
Thanks , yes things are developing as I go along …
I watch a guy restoring a house in France and I liked his music enough for me to Shazam it - and it was called Come Tomorrow by George’s Town The intro is quite long but once you get into it it is very pleasant music only score to listen to
It would be nice to support you on Patreon but I can’t afford it plus CZcams have increased their cost by $10 AUD per month which is a hike over 50%
He needs to add the option to buy a coffee or some other way of giving a one off donation
@@lynnedelacy2841 That’s a good idea 👍
Ugh, I want to see that hand under the over painting so badly!
