I first arrived in '85 and liked it enough to retire here, it but my interests (motorcycling, wrenching in general, firearms) suit the area. Sumter has changed immensely (it's much more crowded) but I don't care for it other than being glad it draws traffic away from me. I live towards Manning and haven't had to lock my doors, ever but property crime in town is high so don't live there. Possible exceptions can be some condos but ask other Airmen what's cool. DO YOUR HOMEWORK on which areas are good. If I didn't live near Manning I'd have looked for something between SW and Cola. Thanks to former Congressman Spratt the base got major investments and is set up ("jointness" etc) to survive future BRAC (good for property owners and the community but the civilians just take that for granted). The nearby installations are a self-reinforcing constellation of Federal investment without which the area would have been a poor backwater. I consider it an excellent retirement location. If you're interested in education I heartily recommend Central Carolina Technical College where I was variously a student, volunteer and employee. It has MANY retired military instructors because they like to hire from the former student pool. The machining and welding programs are excellent based on my direct experience and I'd not hesitate to choose Mechatronics or CAD. Their nursing etc programs are outside my experience but many G.I.s have taken them. Civilians should note between financial aid, lottery money and Pell grants you'll likely pay little or nothing if you do it right. Harley owners can get work done by C & C Cycle Services. They've been wrenching for many years and are good people. Other makes are covered by dealers but I don't keep close track as I do all my own work.
