I thought it might be fun to make a short video of some of my favorite wildlife experiences along the Lost Coast Trail. There is no talking in this video, just wildlife footage and relaxing music. Enjoy.

Timberline Trail | A Bucket List Backpacking Adventure
The grey sea lion watching you as you walked past ….. I wonder if the hunting humans have done of them is ingrained into them to beware of humans? Another channel I watch of a very adventurous Canadian man who does very long trips, he has just slept on a closed cell mat for however long he’s made videos. Less performance issues than a lightweight air mattress. I have had one night on a rocky surface when we didn’t get back to camp for a reason. I was uncomfortable but as you say, we adapt. I bet you slept well when you got home. The contrast is that you may have also missed the sounds of the ocean crashing into the shore, the winds etc
@@l214laus I’ve used closed cell foam pads in the past, and I just don’t get good sleep on them. I replaced the faulty pad with a Nemo Tensor All Season (another inflatable) based on recommendations from other backpackers I know who know gear better than I do. I’ve had three nights on it so far and it’s been very comfortable with no issues. Hopefully that holds true long term.
WoW! That’s Incredibly Awesome! I Loved it! 🤩❤️✨
Thank you!
Very nice! ❤❤❤
Thank you!!
Great shots. Really relaxing video. Makes me want to upgrade my 12 year old camera body and get back into photography. I have a nice set of prime lenses just sitting there.
As I’ve made photography a bigger part of my backpacking in the last couple years, I find it centers me more on where I am and I see more. It’s not just walking from A to B.
You can watch the full trip video here: czcams.com/video/qHBuju1vxv8/video.html
That was the most relaxing 5 minutes of my day. Thanks for sharing.
😍 love it! You truly outdo yourself with each video you make.
This is one of the nicest things anyone has said to me on CZcams. Thank you. You made my day!!!
Love this! So rad to see animals just doing their thing.
There was so much action going on this trip! A ton I don’t film too, just amazing.
Nice music. This hike is on my bucket list. I will make it up there someday.
It’s worth the wait. This was my second time, and won’t be the last.
Beautiful setting and fantastic editing. Thanks so much for sharing!
Thank you so much! I’m really happy with how this one turned out.
Wow, what a great video. Might have to add this to the list of places to go. Amazing wildlife experiences!
I highly recommend it. This was my second trip and I’ll probably go again sometime! PS the strawberry oats really started the trip off the right way! So good.
The beach is something else. Wild to be backpacking and have all that wildlife that’s so different from the forest
I feel really lucky to have seen as much wildlife as we did. Much more variety and frequency than my last trip!
Great to see you out. Nice shots. Sucks about the pad issues but glad you stuck it out.
It’s one of those things that happens I suppose. It worked out ok in the end.
What an amazing video and awesome trip! The views are stunning and man, that wildlife is so amazing! This is one of your best videos if not the best! I love this new format!
Wow. Thank you! I’m really happy with how it turned out.
As I am planning on doing Langley in a few weeks, normal route, maybe making a loop out of it by including both Army Passes, I am left wondering, why attempt to make a mountain harder, rather than just do another 14'er in CA or CO?? Langley will be #6 14'er for me. Good call and weather substantiated your decision!
@@karlbe8414 Good question haha. We’d already done the normal route. And we’ve been on a handful of other CA 14ers. Sometimes you just need to try something wild I guess.
great trip! really enjoyed the video. thx for joining me and driving! :)
Thanks for inviting me! It was a great trip. Even if I did have to sleep on the ground for most of it haha
@@LostAgainwithJim whatever it takes!
Well it’s good you got some sleep. Have you had more words with Sea to Summit?
@@tangenttrails I did. They exchanged the defective pad for a sleeping bag I don't really need, but will find use for. I purchased a Nemo Tensor All Season pad that I've had two nights on so far. The jury is still out......
@@LostAgainwithJim Well, I guess they tried but that’s very concerning. I’ve used Nemo Tensors before and gotten really good sleep with them but had leakage issues with them as well.🤷♂️
This was a great video, thanks. For me, I'm just getting into backpacking, and I'm looking at all this ultralight gear, and I keep thinking, after how much weight has been shed in all other areas, people are complaining about having to carry a bear can? I bet even 30 years ago backpackers were carrying 1.5x the weight of backpackers today and did so with no complaint.
Agreed. And honestly, they aren't that heavy. The benefit is worth the weight as far as I'm concerned.
hi jim, do you have a link to this route somewhere on the internet? iwould loveto retrace your footsteps its so beautiful man
I don’t I’m sorry to say. I don’t typically track my hikes or routes. But honestly, any trip in that area is going to be beautiful!
great video. my son and i are doing the same thing and you gave me all the info i needed. thank you. was there lot of places to came at baker? once again thank you.
Yeah. There are quite a few tent pads around the lake.
I love your videos but don't do hikes myself. When you said you're feet got wet but you were prepared for that, what did that mean? Like change of clothes or socks? Seriously wondering.
That’s a good question. On this trip because I knew there would be several water crossings (although I was not aware of the flood damage, or how long my feet would be in the water!!) I was carrying an extra pair of light weight shoes, and extra socks I could wear around the campsite while my wet shoes and socks dry out in the sun.
Ah OK. Thank you for the response. I was thinking you had some kind of magical hiking boots that didn't get wet. Keep hiking and stay safe.
Beautiful as always! I really appreciate all the details you put into your videos. You could post once a year or less, I’ll keep watching. You and Kiki have both been in thoughts these past few months, hopefully you are both doing well.
We’re doing good! Still up in the air if Kiki will be able to join me on the trails again. Her diet and medication is pretty restrictive.
Just around the next bend ......
Beautiful scenery and fantastic editing. Thanks for sharing!
Thank you for the kind words! I’ve been experimenting with editing techniques and find I really enjoy that aspect of making these videos. This one was a “proof of concept” in a way haha.
Great stuff. Doing this in August and found your post very helpful.
Awesome! Glad I could help! I hope your trip goes well!!
Ey great to see you out again 👍Nice shots!
Thanks! It felt great to be out again haha.
Its like riding a bike...u never forget. You may feel a little wobbly at first, but u quickly remember after a few miles. Great video! I like how you narrate the video.
Thank you! I’m trying some new things with my video editing. The overdubbed narration gives me more opportunity to say the right things haha. I can get tongue tied on trail trying to explain things.
Beautiful scenery, Jim. Good to see you out again. I agree, snow makes everything harder. Janet & I were within 1/4 mile of our destination when we made the decision to turn around. She’d forgotten her yak tracks and the final hill was so snow covered I worried about her making it back down. She fell twice on the way back as it was. Spring hikes…❄️❄️❄️
It always tough to turn back, but it’s usually the right call. Snow makes moving efficiently and trail finding more difficult.
Well Jim, how’d it feel to be back out there?
It was good! Definitely took a few miles to get back into the swing of it. But it was nice to be out walking and sleeping under the stars.
@@LostAgainwithJim Excellent!
I did this in 2022 also, but starting at Cloud Cap and going counter clockwise. 1st crossing was Elliot creek, mind you, counterclockwise + the creek crossing itself. I’m 60 and it was steep to get back up to the trail. I spent 4 nights going around. Part of that was the cutoff trail, when going counterclockwise, it was not clear about the diversion to the PCT at that time in my maps or my Garmin. Big wrong way for many miles. Incredible hike, I’d so it again. When I got to the log crossing at mud creek it was dark and I literally set up camp at the creek. Yes, that is a steep long slog, I was going opposite.
I definitely want to hike the trail again. It was a ton of fun.
Done this hike a couple times, bear canister is required and can be obtained at the ranger station.
I carried mine. I have it on most hikes unless I know for sure there aren’t bears in the area.
Absolutely agree. Like you, I have both a 450 and 500, depending on the trip.
I’m with you 💯. If we want to hike in bear habitat we need to carry a bear canister and figure out how to deal with packing it.
Great vibe
Good stuff! We are planning a 7 nighter in that area and your videos definitely confirm it’s an awesome area for an adventure. Yew!
Seven nights!? That’s awesome. There is so much to see out there.
@@LostAgainwithJim we like some longer trips… Did a 16 day SEKI Traverse trip last September. Amazing being connected to nature for that long. Check out this trailer my buddy did for that trip! Happy trails… czcams.com/video/kl5vnG4R9QY/video.htmlsi=WWHBZRIlaQmAxT-e
Not a chair guy either! In addition to an inflatable mattress I take along a Thermarest Z Lite Sol (cut in half 36”) Foam Pad - 7.2oz. Use it for so many things: dump all my gear onto when I get to camp, yoga pad, sit pad, wind break for stove, extra warmth (R value) under inflatable pad, as a wedge to level out ground I’m sleeping on, star gazing pad, vestibule door mat, etc…
Was 100% against the Bear Canister! Probably because I did not have much UL gear and that only added to the weight. I don't hike in areas where it is required, but every time I go hiking something is always attracted to my food. Example, racoons, fox etc... Last trip I woke up about 4 times to check my food to see if anything got into it. I ended up purchasing a BV450 when I got home. When I start doing longer hikes, I'll just move up in size of BV. Video is spot on. 👍👍👍
Great video and views! Mind if I ask how many total miles this was? Newbie myself!
With the loop it was roughly 11 miles round trip. 6 in, 5 out.
I hiked the Ruby Crest Trail in 2020, south to north, and it was harder than I thought it was going to be.
It’s tough trail! I think because it’s short in terms of a thru hike it seems easier than it is.
Congratulations! Thank you for sharing as it brought back great memories of my time in Coyote Gulch and going through Crack in the Wall! I did in my seventies and while I still hike that hike is now off my list. Glad you made it safe and sound!😀👍
I’d like to go back. It’s a beautiful area.
