It’s so CRAZY what is going on out there! No trail is worth your life. You gotta weight those outcomes and I think you have made the right choices. It’s just not worth it. But when the snow melts, run into those mountains my friend. Absolutely great video!

The snows not melting for a long time haha. I’m just waiting for it to stop falling haha.

Although not quite as severe as the sierras, in Utah we've had constant storm cycles roll in as well with some record-high snowpack and subsequently, I've only managed to squeeze out one quick hike this winter. However, snowboarding has been great haha.

I’ve some reports out of Utah too! Couple big avalanches. What’s really wild near here is at least two ski resorts had to close because their chair lifts were buried.

I have loved being able to take many trip out west and it’s unbelievably awesome (crazy weather) but awesome. Living on the eastern half of the country our trip planning is 1000 x’s easier when it comes to risk management. Hope you get the chance to get on trail soon 🤞

I like to keep informed of snowfall for the San Juans.
Snowpack sits at 162 - 170% above normal at present with 3 - 4 feet expected to fall over this weekend.
I can only imagine what’s going on it the backcountry. The San Juans are known for high numbers of avalanches.
While my plans will not take me into the SJ backcountry until the first of September, there’s no telling what lasting effects this winters avalanche
debris will have on trail crews or travel in the wilderness this season or several to come long after the snowmelt has past.
    Stay safe, Jim.✌️

Yeah. It’s going to be a wild year in the California backcountry

Nice one Jim! Sweet b roll! Yeah snackbox said he may have to scrap his high sierras trip this year, sad. I'm totally with ya on the risk/reward balance. Being a local to some of this blasting, I wouldn't trust how volatile it has been this winter. The weather patterns have changed swiftly so I think you're right in playing it safe and not risking it.

Yeah. So I filmed this Saturday, and it posted Tuesday. In that time, the snow pack moved to second place! Haha. Big storm came up form the south and is dumping again today!

@@LostAgainwithJim Just crazy! We've gotten around 4-6" but it's a mix so far.

Thanks for a concise presentation of the conditions you are encountering. Hopefully you have been able to take Kiki out for a W each day?

Well said. You’re wise to consider all the possible outcomes. Have you found yourself dialing back from backpacking trips to day hiking to try to get in your self care?

Here and there. One of the main issues has been access to the trailheads. A lot of the roads have been closed, either due to heavy snow, or accidents. I’ve been taking long walks around town, Urban hiking I guess haha.

It's already the 2nd highest. The rain and wind are brutal, as I'm typing, near Monterey. I've been thinking about checking out the Sierras this year but that might have to wait until Summer? This might not be a good year for me to backpack in the snow the first time. I've been sneaking in trips between atmospheric rivers but with tree falls, roads and trails crumbling, and unpredictable rivers and creeks, I might stick with locations I know. Maybe I'll test the waters with some car camping & day hikes first. Then try snow-shoeing, and then backpack?

It’s so wild! I filmed this on Saturday, and Monday night enough fell to push it to second place! The Sierras are going to be rough this year. Especially at higher elevations, and north facing areas. We’ll have snow we’ll into summer. Snow shoeing is a great introduction to snowy adventures! Another good way to practice is to find a short trail, a mile or two, and set up camp. That way if you’re not having a good time, you’re close to your car and can bail if you need to. Mini backpacking adventures!

@@LostAgainwithJim Awesome, thanks! I was thinking of trying somewhere like Pinecrest for my first trip. Head to a lake from the Crabtree trailhead. Or another lower elevation trailhead. Or maybe a place where I can rent snowshoes for a short overnight trip. I'll have plenty of time to plan I guess hah.
