- Winter camping & backpacking in a snowstorm, blizzard - heavy snowfall extreme weather forest tent camping in the north, no fire, cold tent, high winds, survival. 25 m/s, 56 mph, 90 km/h.
Cold tent winter camping during a snow storm in the northern wilderness. The forecast said 25m/s or 56mph winds. I choose snow shoes again since it makes filming easier than if I was using skis.
I walked out into the forest in a break in the storm and set up camp, getting ready for the heavy snowstorm that was coming in through the night. It turned into a massive storm but I had found a sheltered place for my camp in the trees. I also built a snow wall to shelter behind for the eastern winds. Quite an interesting trip that ended in a mixture between rain and sleet. Extended version coming soon.
Gear list for this trip is towards the end of the video.
About me: I am a Norwegian adventurer and wilderness explorer. My youtube channel focus on outdoor wilderness adventures and exploration, backpacking, hiking, canyoneering, skiing, climbing and mountaineering. Nights spent in a tent, alone or with friends. From the snow covered mountains and misty fjords of Norway and Scandinavia to the remote plateaus of Yellowstone and the debts of the red canyons of Utah to the summit of Mt Whitney and the heart of Sequoia Kings Canyon National Park. I love the Wilderness! Email is under "For business inquiries", for general questions please comment on a video, I try to answer everyone.

That tent seems realiable. What tent is it?
EDIT: a good minute before the end, I found the info :)
Hilleberg Nallo 3, for everybody who is interested.
Good work 💯💯💯💯
I know it's very hard n cold n wet but I really want to experience it.👍
This was great! I’m 63 and I still love winter camping in the snow. No hot tent, no Little Buddy heater. Just my 2 man tent, my -45 degree sleeping bag, my jet boil, with grub & coffee!
Exactly, thats the gear you need and that you can take into the mountains
Hi great setting, -45 it's colder than the 2022 buffalo new York blizzard. Your gear saved your life. Please put a detailed list of your awesome gear.
I'm 67 and alone now, I wouldn't even imagine this. I love thinking I could be warm, this is my dream.
-45 degress😮 which Sleeping Bag do you use? Please share your gears list!!
@@Monika-uv2qp it is an old USAF surplus bag, it weighs a ton. So I only use it static camping, not backpacking. ThermaRest LuxuryMap pad to go under my bag, and a ThermaRest Zlite to go on the ground.I have a Jetboil flash cooking system. Alps Mountaineering Tasmanian 2 person 4 season tent. Alps Red Tail backpack. I’m looking into getting a ThermaRest Polar Ranger bag, it is only a -20f bag, but I will get some kind of a down filled poncho that doubles as a bag for a liner.
Enjoyed watching this at 8.30pm in my armchair drinking a large whisky in the warm. Lovely.
Wonderful!
My feet always get cold unless I'm in room temperature. When my feet are cold, the rest of me feels cold.
I'm glad you can enjoy this. I love the idea of it with the storm sounds. Thanks for not adding music.
Thanks Joe!
This man walks trough deep snow like he is walking on a beach. Effortlessly. And keep in mind when you film by yourself the trip is twice as long and sometimes three times as long. Walk ahead and place the camera. Walk back and then go forward towards the camera. Then go back and retrieve the camera and do it again and again and again. Brilliant filming. Just amazing.
Thank you!
It looks sooo cold even inside the tent. Amazing how something made of fabric can shelter a person in bad weather. That's a pretty sturdy well made tent. I'd like to see someone build an igloo to ride out a blizzard in.
This was a good one. Thanks for posting it.
Thanks Myrna!
I love to watch winter camping in snow but I just can't understand why anyone would put themselves through it lol. I wouldn't be able to sleep for those high winds and I can't stand being cold. You're a brave man x
Можно понять, если только он испытатель этой зимней экипировки, а мы, глядя на него, только сильней укутываемся в одеяло.

We were in our cabin 2 weeks ago in the UP of Michigan in an exact same type of blizzard. We had the wood stove burning away, nowhere to go and we loved it!! You're brave to be in a tent. The howling of the winds was so relaxing. Good video, I enjoyed it!
Sounds great!
Yay! Blizzards ARE so calming & cozy. -Saami in WA.
I love that tent!
We road out a storm at my cabin in Michigan a few weeks back. Power went out so pellet stove went down. Luckily enough we still had the old wood stove in the basement that was the original. My cousins live in the area and brought over enough wood to last the night. We enjoyed some kettle stew and some hottie totties and listened to it howl outside in freezing cold weather.
I absolutely love the UP
I used to go to Neebish Island at the end of August. Absolutely the favorite time of my life. That's when I fell in love with the UP. I've seen much more since then. Love it! I'm from NW Ohio.
Thank you for another awesome winter storm video. Hardcore camping at its best!
Thanks Frank!
Excellent quality gear list! Your sleeping bag and tent are top of the line. I say, “buy once, cry once”.
Yeah, I have never regretted buying those or anything else from the top shelf
This is my top favourite camping video on CZcams!
Ive lost count how many times ive re-watched this vid.
Puts me to sleep in minutes wraped up in my blanket in bed pretending im out in the snow in a blizzard
Awesome!
This is by far the most intense snow camping video ❄️❄️🥶🥶
Thanks Bud!
Aaahh, relaxing during a snow storm. The right time for an ice cream.
Happy New Year! Keep taking us with you, to your beautiful adventures also in 2023!
Happy new year Nikos!
Well put together. Thanks for sharing the snow storm experience.
Glad you enjoyed it!
Love the idea of the isolation. No television, no depressing news, no mobile phone, no music, no humans. As long as I had some chocolate, I would love it. 😊
Lol, chocolate is the best, i am trying to quit!
Cool storm. I, also love the sound of the snow battering the tent. I can tell by the smile on your face that you are enjoying yourself. Hope you have the happiest of New Years. Stay safe and warm.
Yes, thank you Judi and happy new year!

Happy New Year Jarl! What an effort for a overnight camping adventure. And a great job on all aspects of the video! It looks like you didn't get much sleep or rest there! Excellent video to start 2023.
Thanks Stanley, I got some good sleep actaully, slept until around 10 in the morning:-)
What a hardcore, no fire no heat, just a small tent. Great adventures awaits you

Jarl is a madman! Love this - what a great winter gear setup!
Thanks lol!
I really enjoy these videos 🎉I’d never handle it myself but I’ll just enjoy watching ✊
Thanks Craig!
That snow sound hitting the tent was so relaxing . The wind not so much. But another great video. Love winter camping videos, thanks for sharing
Glad you enjoyed it Jay!
OMG!!!! I haven’t heard this beautiful sound in years and years . I was brought up in northern Quebec so I know the sound .
Awesome, thanks for watching!
This was great! I'm 87 and I still love winter camping in the snow. No hot girls, no stinky weed. Just my hand and my wee little willy!
Lol
I always enjoy your camping you’ll never be alone because I’m always there with you I love the snow Enjoy your adventure
Thank you so much Gwen!
What a beautiful place, I would love to live the rest of my life in a place like that. So beautiful and peaceful. Thank you for sharing. 💖
Glad you enjoyed it
Después de vivir esto no habrá nada que le dé temor en la vida 🇲🇽👍
Thank you for braving the extreme conditions and sharing your experiences with us. I would be in tears right after it got lower than 40°F. One year, I went skiing in Utah, I was so demoralized and cold. I came back defeated. So the next year I added a fur layer under my parka and went back to conquer. I did.
Thank you so much!
Another amazing adventure, Jarl. As always, thank you for taking us with you. Even if I am hundled under a quilt in my warm living room. 😃 Happy New Year and stay safe out there! ☺❤
Happy new year Deborah
Nouvel An à toi, moi aussi. J'ai réagi Avec son aventure intéressante
Great stuff. Really amazing to watch this crazy weather camping. My favourite!
Thanks Lee!
Saya sangat setuju dengan pernyataan anda
My dear friend, this is such a powerful and incredible video and so amazing to experience it from your unique point of view. As someone who used to be incredibly adventurous, hitchhiking, and a lot of outdoor hiking, I feel almost guilty watching this and asking myself what happened. Moved to a city a few years ago and feel like I lost all the adventurous spirits I had before. Watching your video, I feel truly motivated to change this scenario. Thank you for creating and sharing this, I really appreciate it.
I am glad to hear that, sometimes it is very difficult to get motivation, I know how it is!
That kind of wind makes for a long night!
Impressed with how the Nallo handled that storm?
Got to love Hilleberg❤
Fun stuff!😎
Thanks for watching!
This is my kind of 5 Star Hotel…..the Paradise!!
Indeed
Just like the night Rudolf spent in the land of Unwanted Toys! :D
Not for the faint of heart. Some serious camping there. When the pit is knee deep and you haven't hit earth that's some deep snow. The Nallo is holding up well. Stake my life on a Hilleberg. Put the snow sound in some of your music. You know Jarl it's easy getting out there before the storm hits. But it's a whole other story trying to make it back in. Call the dogs and hunker down. Happy New Year. Be safe.
Thanks Sam you too
Niezwykłe. zdjęcia👍❤️
Happy New Year.
The wind 💨 adds some excitement and challenges to winter camping!
Thanks! You too!
Almost had to put on coat to watch. Happy New Year Jarl!!!
Happy new year Butch!
In weather like this there is no such thing as an EXPENSIVE Hilleberg tent, especially when it's providing reliable 5-Star Shelter during a strong gusty rain/snow /wind storm. It quite remarkeable that anyone can manufacturer a shelter that withstands the kind of weather you not only endured, but filmed for us to enjoy.
Warm Regards from Reno, Nevada - we got 4" of snow the past 2-days/nights.
I agree, wow, I heard there where storms and you got dumped, I hope you get to go outside and enjoy it Bill!
Nothing beats a hilleberg!
@@peterpohan3850 Indeed!
Damn great tent. That’s a real wind, sheesh! Når la vinden endelig seg?

Wow! Things got pretty crazy and intense! That is a pretty sturdy tent. Thanks for sharing!
Thanks for watching Morne!
Aaaah, I can smell fresh snow!
Indeed!
There is just something that is so comforting about being behind a thin layer of fabric from mother nature.
It is indeed!
Lots of us guys have tested ourselves camping here in Alabama. We use to go when the weather was down in the teens, I believe it reached 9° once at my lowest experience here in central Alabama. The only blizzard I saw was while in HS in the blizzard of 93, again here in central Alabama. I wouldn’t have wanted any part of that one! Man, you had 56 mph winds??? Wow!!! Congrats for braving it and making it through safely. I’d be thinking tree limbs, tent ripping, too many possibilities that could turn dangerous really fast. So hats off on that trip. 👍🏼
Thank you! These are not really trees that will loose a limb or fall down, pretty sturdy stuff:-)
Now that is a real snow storm camping love it
Thank you!!
Awesome! I enjoy my Winter backpacking as well
Cool:-)
Happy New year .. thanks for posting this great video.

Great video. Beautiful scenery and something I will never forget. ❤
Awesome thanks!
أحب التخييم كثيرا فصل الشتاء رائع
It is!
In Alberta Canada we're pretty used to -35 to - 45° C weather for anywhere from 6-8 months a year and anywhere from 3'-5' of snow! Yet not always at once but very known to happen! So I'm getting what you were going through!
That is cold, very rare in Norway to get that cold
Ok... I'm moving to Norway! I love snow, and I adore camping outdoors all year round yet I am rather abit tiring of the bitter cold!!!
Come on over:-)
Loved it. Just...a bit too short. We want the 1h version of the storm. 😀
Coming soon!

⛷Hi there Norwegian Xplorer, my friend!
I hope you're having a great start to this NY.
As always, another awesome video here, packed with all things fun, exciting, amazing & very COLD!! lol
Your cinematography, your true love & respect for Mother Earth/Mother Nature & of course, your patience, resilience & strength!

The snow looks spectacular on camera & IMPO, looks akin to yummy white icing sugar!
Anyway, take care & i so look forward to your next video.
Tusen takk, Norwegian Xplorer!!😊
Thank you again:-)
For those wondering why he dug a hole in the vestibule, it's to allow him to sit in the tent and easily remove his boots. That helps to prevent snow in the tent.
PRO TIPS
ISOBUTANE
Isobutane canisters are not that great in winter because cold will contract the gas, so the stove will be less performant and can even not work at all. Either keep the canister in your jacket to warm it up before using it. Or use one of those toe warmers pads. They have a sticker under it, so you can stick it under the canister to keep the gas warm.
MELTING SNOW
It's best to compact the snow very hard in the pot and then to slowly warm it up to make water. This will avoid burning the pot and the water to have a bad taste.
SNOW WALL & SHOVEL
You can do like him and build a snow wall around your tent. However, if a lot of snow, you might end up all snowed in. That's, again, do like him and keep the shovel inside.
VARIOUS
Always have a knife at hand during a snowstorm. If your tent collapse, it may be like a vacuum seal and the tent very tight on you with absolutely no light. If unable to find the door and zipper quick, then you'll need to cut the tent to get out.
You can also set a tarp, V-shape, over your tent using the trekking poles of tree branches and paracord as a ridgeline. This will help a lot by deflecting the snow and keeping you even warmer.
The winter cannisters are mostly propane which works very well in winter, it is good to have a little bit of water in your pot nefore adding snow to avoid burning of the pot.
@@NorwegianXplorer Maybe in your country, but in North America and France, the Isobutane canisters consist of 80% Butane and 20% Propane. Also, that's why no one in mountaineering is using isobutane canisters. Not even the Norwegian army for their winter operations.
@@NorwegianXplorer I just checked and the canister you're using is a Coleman Xtreme. Coleman claims the mix is 70% Butane / 30% Propane. So that helps during winter. However, the less fuel remaining in the canister, the lesser the performance will be. This is simple physics combining vaporization, and cold temperature/contraction.
This hole has a other function too. It allows the cold air to sink into it. Everyone in the Norwegian army knows the name of this hole. Something like “cold trench”
@@pal_lokomotivet2679 You're 100% right lokomotive :) This comes from the Inuits (Canada) and other people living in the Arctic and making igloos. Some may think the entrance is level with the ground and the bottom of the igloo, but it's not. It's lower than the floor of the igloo to allow the cold to sink. The digging in the tent's vestibule does that, but just a little. But hey! when cold, you take everything that can help to get warmer, right? ;)
I'm sorry - this seems miserable. 😀
Holy cow! 😮
❄️🥶
I really enjoyed this and learned alot. Thank you!!
