Guyana SPEAKS: The art of Arlington Weithers - Sunday, 29th October 2023
This Guyana SPEAKS event took place on 29th October 2023 via Zoom and featured New York based Guyanese artist, Arlington Weithers.
Born in 1948, Arlington Weithers is a Guyanese-born painter famous for his large, vividly colored works. Weithers uses heavy paint applied thickly to create textural cracks within the brilliant color schemes of his painting. He, like many contemporary Caribbean artists, eschews the typical tropical or colonial landscape paintings. Weithers’ artistic talent was originally recognized at a young age when a teacher wrongly accused him of copying a drawing, rather than making it himself. After studying art in Georgetown, Guyana’s capital, he moved to New York City in 1969.
He had his first solo exhibition in New York City in 1973. Arlington Weithers has been the artist-in-residence for the city of Dallas, TX. Weithers’ cousin, Dennis Williams, was a famous Guyanese painter, author and archaeologist.

Immigration question, an irony; Education President, "Free" Education; Father of the Nation: 1966 (& 1970) Defence of the nation - Venezuela-Guyana Row; Emigration from Guyana incresed from the mid-1950's to England during the colonial era; Self-help in house-building; Planting and gardening have always been a part of Guyanese life; Negative impact of sugar worker's and rice farmer's Stricks on the health of the Guyanese people? Carifesta; Death?😮 Nationalism and Patriotism; Cheddi hadn't a chance as premier - not Prime Minister - in 1957 to 1964, Guyana's being still a colonial child of England with a governor from Britain; Linden's bias against Burnham, not unlike mine, may be founded on Burnham's reported orchestration of the assassination of Dr. Walter Rodney 😮😢 Question Was Burnham's Pan-African slant inferior to or superior to his apparent egocentricism?😮😢😅

Burnham? Right place, right time; Cheddi, a weak opposition, led by his wife Janet; 63? Heavy smoker! Backed by U.S.A. & U.K. (Linden has done a research and doesn't know about the Protocol of Port of Spain, spearheaded in 1970 by Dr. Eric Williams of Trinidad!) Janet Rosenberg-Jagan, greatest ideological influence on Burnham; Janet Rosenberg-Jagan was/is the primary face of the socioeconomic (and racist) shape of Guyana; More Donald J Trump than Papa Doc. 2.5**: mediocre research and very poor analysis 😮😢😅

I had never heard this song until I heard it on "Dad's Army". There are several versions of it on CZcams.

I'm actually one of those who searched Roy for so long. I used to listen to audio tapes of his Hyde Park events and can still repeat them by heart. I wish I had the opportunity to be part of this event. Thank you all for this chance to hear Roy with video.

I am so grateful to hear the stories. My Portuguese family who left to Guyana are obviously not able to tell me their stories. But from this video I can hear something of that time
