  • This is a partial recording of a Guyana SPEAKS zoom session that took place on Sunday, 24th September at 3.30pm UK. The original event was called Guyana's Material Culture and the Environmentalist Tradition of Art Making. This recording does not however include the archaeologist Dr Amara Thornton's contribution, Collecting Guyana (at her request and for copyright issues).
Beyond the Black Box - Speaker: Dr Giulia Smith
Dr Giulia Smith received her PhD from University College London in 2016. She specialises in modern and contemporary art, with an emphasis on the legacies of empire in Britain and across the Atlantic world. Her book project, titled Living Landscapes: Nature as Anti-Colonial Agent in Guyanese Art, considers visual objects and literary texts produced in the second half of the 20th century alongside contemporary artworks that mobilise geophysical entities and climatic phenomena in support of counter-hegemonic critiques of colonial and neo-colonial regimes of oppression and environmental exploitation.
Guyana SPEAKS was set up in 2017 and is a community forum which offers regular events aimed at the London based Guyanese diaspora, the wider diaspora and anyone interested in the art, history, literature, tourism and culture of Guyana. To learn more about these events contact Guyana SPEAKS at guyanaspeaks@gmail.com, or go to Guyana SPEAKS on Facebook or Twitter: @JCWestmaas.
