  • This Guyana SPEAKS was held in two parts: the first about Roy Heath and his novel, The Murderer and the second about the Culture Icon Alice B Singh.
    ABOUT ROY HEATH:
    Roy Heath was a Guyanese writer who settled in the UK. He studied law and was called to the bar in 1964 but pursued a career as a schoolteacher and writer. His first novel, A Man Come Home, was published in 1974. The Murderer was published by Allison and Busby in 1978 and won the Guardian Fiction Prize. He went on to become more noted for his “Georgetown Trilogy” of novels consisting of From the Heat of the Day (1979), One Generation (1980), and Genetha (1981). His other published novels are Kwaku, or, The Man Who Could Not Keep His Mouth Shut (1982), Orealla (1984), The Shadow Bride (1988) and The Ministry of Hope (1997). He also wrote non-fiction and plays. He won the Guyana Theatre Guild Award in 1972 and was awarded the Guyana Prize for Literature in 1989. (Source: elisedillsworthagency.com/roy-...)

    SPEAKER'S BIO:
    Roy Heath Jnr, Roy Heath's eldest son, is a documentary maker and broadcast journalist. He worked on the production of BBC Breakfast, Black Britain, Country File, Newsnight and a range of other factual programmes. He won a BBC 2 commission to take saxophonist, Courtney Pine to South Africa as a reporter on a documentary on apartheid and a unique musical archive. As a freelancer, Royston produced programmes for C4, ITV and C5. He also wrote a monthly wildlife column for national magazine Garden Answers and scripted an animation series for BBC Tracks. He is currently a lecturer and is developing a 'docutainment' movie about the UK’s first self-made black millionaires for media startup Anthony Young Studios.

    Margaret Busby OBE, Hon FRSL read the first of two readings from The Murderer. The second reading was by Rod Westmaas, Co-Founder of Guyana SPEAKS.
    BIO:
    Margaret Busby was Britain's youngest and first black female book publisher when in the 1960s she co-founded the London-based publishing house Allison and Busby with Clive Allison (1944-2011). She is perhaps best known as editor of the anthology Daughters of Africa (1992), and its 2019 follow-up New Daughters of Africa. Allison & Busby were the publishers of Roy Heath’s The Murderer in 1978 and Margaret was the editor.

    ABOUT ALICE BHAGWANDAI SINGH:
    Alice Bhagwandai Singh (1892-1970) was born in Suriname. Her immersion into Guyanese society was facilitated through her marriage in 1910 to Dr. Jung Bahadur Singh, an indenture immigrant ship doctor. Alice was the first Guyanese Indian woman to write an autobiography, which offers unique insights into the early part of her life in Suriname. Alice carved out a reputation as an agent of social and cultural change during the early 1900s when it was rare for Indian women to do so. She negotiated a cultural space for Indians through the British Guiana Dramatic Society. Her pioneering cultural work influenced the poetry and writings of Rajkumari Singh and Mahadai Das.
    SPEAKER'S Bio:
    Baytoram Ramharack was born in Berbice, Guyana. He received his PhD degree from New York University. He is currently an Adjunct Assistant Professor of Political Science at Nassau Community College His major publications include the Centenary Celebration of the Arrival of Indians to British Guiana (1838-1938); Against the Grain: Balram Singh Rai and the Politics of Guyana; and Jung Bahadur Singh of Guyana (1886-1956): Politician, Ship Doctor, Labor Leader and Protector of Indians. Dr. Ramharack is currently completing a book on the life Alice Bhagwandai Singh, a cultural icon, and he is conducting research for a study on Cheddi Jagan’s relationship with Indians in Guyana.
