Guyana SPEAKS: British & Guyanese - 2nd/3rd Generation Women

  • This Guyana SPEAKS event explored the professional success of four 2nd/3rd Generation Women living in Britain, their sense of identity & belonging as British citizens & as well as women of Guyanese heritage. Marissa McKinnon who has very kindly produced a jingle for Guyana SPEAKS was invited to join the conversation with Alieda, Natalie, Erica and Salina.
    The Speakers:
    Alieda Moore is currently a manager and policy advisor at the Bank of England. She has held a number of roles at the Bank across its Markets, Financial Stability and Monetary Analysis areas, and is also a public speaker for the Bank. Prior to joining the Bank, she held roles at Deloitte and Goldman Sachs. Alieda is actively involved in diversity and inclusion initiatives, and co-chaired the Ethnic Minority Network from 2018-2020. Alieda has been recognised as a Top 50 EMpower Future Leader and shortlisted for the WeAreTheCity Rising Star award.

    Natalie Quail is the founder and CEO of SmileTime, a rapid growth oral cosmetics company, as seen in the BBC & Independent. Her passion for smile care started from working summers in her parents dental company age 16. She previously worked as an international tax lawyer at top U.K. firms such as Baker & McKenzie & Mishcon de Reya. As a second generation Guyanese, her parents hard work, building their business from scratch have inspired her own discipline & path to entrepreneurship.

    Salina Jane is a London born artist of Indo-Guyanese descent, she makes art about that experience, the journey of her family through indentured labour to Guyana, and as part of the Windrush generation coming to the UK in the 1950’s. She is a visual storyteller, exploring identity, culture, heritage and the Indian, indenture and double diaspora experience through drawing. She is a visual artist working in the mediums of charcoal, pastel, ink and print. Her free to view, solo exhibition ‘Following the Thread’ was shown at Queens Park Arts Centre in Aylesbury in 2021.     Erica Sember (last name Bissember) from a young age was always drawn to music. In her early years she learned to play the piano and had vocal coaching which sparked the beginning of what would lead to her releasing her debut single. Throughout her life, music has always been a safe place for her to turn.     I am extremely impressed by the skills, talents and accomplishments of these ladies. It makes me so proud of my own Guyanese roots. Keep making Guyana proud. And to Juanita, Thanks for these amazing presentations. You are a blessing.
