Telegraph Road is a major north-south 70-mile (110 km) thoroughfare in Michigan, and Mark Knopfler was inspired to write the song while riding in the front of the tour bus, which made the journey down Telegraph Road. At the same time, Knopfler was reading the novel Growth of the Soil by the Nobel Prize winning Norwegian author Knut Hamsun and he was inspired to put the two together and write a song about the beginning of the development along Telegraph Road and the changes over the ensuing decades.

What people forget is he played the largest diameter strings available for a guitar......try bending .013" - .058" strings for 3 hours and get back to me. You won't be able to....LOL

As a classical guitarist you really must check out their live perfarmance of "Private Investigations" (On the Night, 1993). 1. It's absolutely beautiful music amd 2. Mark plays an acoustic guitar for a significant part of it.

According to my old LP notes, guitarist Steve Howe is playing a 12 string Spanish Laud but he calls it a Portuguese 12 string which is similar but looks completely different. The Electric guitar is a Gibson ES-175. Singer Jon Anderson is playing a 10 string Puerto Rican Cuatro made by Alvarez.
