USWNT Soccer, LGBTQ Inclusion, and Conservative Christianity
In Episode 34 of Car Chats, we discuss our love for women's soccer and its place as a space of LGBTQ inclusion and progress in our society. Recently, the US Women's National Team faced a threat to that status when a current player (Korbin Albert) shared and liked a variety of Christian social media that was homophobic and transphobic. We react to the situation and the responses of two former USWNT players who are queer: Christen Press and Tobin Heath. Tobin is also a Christian, so we unpack her reflections and the harm of conservative Christian anti-LGBTQ sentiment.

    Not surprising given the context. Corbin attended Notre Dame (a well known Catholic school) and has talked about converting people to Catholism. She's also young and it's surprising how young people seem to have blinders on when it comes to their actions on social media. Hopefully Corbin has learned from her mistakes. If she does it again, she should be removed from the team.

    Thank you for your well thought out and articulated analysis of this controversy. My heart’s prayer is LGBTQIA+ Christians will remain committed to who God made them to be no matter what others say or think, but also remain in deep relationship with God. I pray that they will not be pressured by “the church” or the gay community to forsake the God who formed them and loves them, and walks beside them - just like they are. There are churches that believe that all who believe in the saving grace of Jesus can be full participants and fully serve. I go to one of those churches. Thank you for your videos. They uplift me and give me hope. PS: Love your outtakes!

What do you think are some ways that us LGBTQ Christians can reach out to church members that are struggling to love people who are different? To me it's completely mystifying why anybody with the least self-respect would want to be part of a church like that. The fact that some (not all) Christians struggle with not judging despite obvious advice from their bible "do not judge lest you be judged" etc, etc, blah, blah, blah is absolutely extraordinary to me as practicing Hindu in a legacy christian country! Furthermore and even more to the point is the fact that a great many Christian denominations following the LIBERAL CHRISTIAN TRADITION ALREADY PERFORM SAME SEX MARRIAGE AND SO IT'S PROBABLY A HELL OF A LOT EASIER FOR THOSE GAY CHRISTIANS, etc to join those Christian communities from the get go and bypass the rest and just NOT get involved in THEIR DRAMAS and THEIR STRUGGLES! Go where you're best treated! By contrast in the Vedic/Sanatana Dharma/Hindu tradition their is absolutely no prohibition against Gay relationships and USA Mandirs (Hindu Temples) perform same sex marriage ceremonies and very much encourage full acceptance of sexual minorities. Not all Mandirs in all parts of the world take the same view and so sexual minorities may well be faced with having to look elsewhere if their needs are not accommodated more locally. It will be interesting to see how Mandirs in THAILAND respond to the new Same Sex Marriage laws coming into effect there this October 2024!

    Congrats on your engagements Joey and Dana! Keep doing what you're doing from an Ace Christian! "It says it explicitly in the Bible!" If Conservative Christians actually took the tine to read their own Bible in the correct historical context they'd know that. But of course they won't. Because research and thinking is too hard for them. When read in the proper historical context, the passage against homosexuality were referring to male rape, not loving consensual homosexual relationships or any other LGBT relationships as we know them today. Thousands of animals exhibit homosexual behavior for a reason like strengthening pair bonds. It's clear that God created homosexuality because He saw it as good and that the wide array of human sexuality(providing everyone is consensual or no one is being hurt as in my case as well sex isn't on my radar.) showcases God's glory. So glad you're posting again!

    Lifeless and dead is a very Christian term! Paul speaks those words all the time we are al dead to sin. (I AM DEAD TO SIN) yet everyday I am renewed by the Spirit and so I must flea those sins and temptations and cling to Jesus the true giver of life because a life of sin is a life of death.

  • @tracy-janevis7843
    @tracy-janevis7843 Před 10 měsíci

    I don't think Jackie is saying there can be absolutely no overlap in (and pardon my terminology) the lgbtq2+ community and God. God is a God of love but He is NOT a God of acceptance. I believe anger is wrong, I believe watching porn is wrong, I believe gossiping and slandering is wrong and even though I do those sins God still loves me. But that doesn't mean He wants me to gossip and slander. God loves me but He still wants me to fight those sinful desires. And often times I don't want to. So yes God can be evident in an LGBQ2+ community but that does not mean He accepts it means He loves you and he wants you to run away from it and He is going to help you. That doesn't mean we never stumble in sin and by no means is someone going to hell because they are a homosexual. I may not be homosexual but I still have sins that I live in and don't want to give up. Yet the part of God's redeeming grace is that even when I stumble God still loves me and wants to help me. It seems a harsh reality and it seems that a lot of Christians slander the LGBTQ2+ community. I do not support the community myself but every person is loved by God and while I my not accept the fact that someone is indulging in homosexuality I will not shun them because I'm no better or worse then them. They are loved by God just as much as I am and Jesus sacrifice is there for them just as much as it is for me. So to conclude I think what Jackie is saying is that by indulging in homosexuality you are in a world of sin. And truthfully we cannot serve 2 masters we will ether hate one and love the other or vice versa. But humanity (and I am no exception to this) loves to try serve sin and God and although sin seems appealing. God is the only true place of freedom. So yes God loves the people in the LGBTQ2+ community but He does not support their cause because that is not how God created man to be. Perhaps my words sound harsh but regardless of what I say or anyone believes. WE ALL SIN!! But Jesus dies for ALL. And there is only one way to salvation and that I through Christ which means as enjoyable as sin can be only true freedom is found in Jesus Christ and we must flee our sins. EVERY SIN!! B/c no one is perfect and we all deserve hell but Jesus saves all that believe in Him (John 3:16)

Your tribe has tried and failed to colonize the world to spread White Christianity by force and might either via empire building (Dutch East India company-capitalism) or wars (human rights-Vietnam; Iraq; Iran; Libya; Afghanisthan). Leave Christianity to the Africans, Brazilians, and Asians. Return to your pagan gods. Jesus was and is a Jew.

      Though I strongly disagree with the CZcamsrs here and their attempt to reconcile identifying with a sexual preference and an identity in Christ, I respect their freedom of speech. Regardless of someone’s “minority” status, they deserve to be able to share their thoughts and have a discussion in the marketplace of thought. What I see that wokeness often tries to do is shut down the discussion rather than engaging with the other side. If you do love God, you should be reasoning with people that you don’t agree with instead of demonizing them for mistreating minorities. That’s an ad hominem argument that attacks the person rather than the idea, and it’s not only illogical but it’s also deceptive if you’re doing that on purpose. Like I said, I don’t agree with these ladies, but please at least respect them enough to engage with their ideas and disagree in a respectful and intellectually honest way.

    Thanks for sharing your thoughts on this. I definitely think that this conversation should be happening and all our ideas should be allowed to be debated in the public square, kind of like how Paul took a lot of opportunities to reason with Jews and Gentiles during his travels. Question for you two: As professing Christians who lean on the affirming side, could you share why you’re getting your definitions on homosexuality from secular sources and not from the word of God? To be frank, the way that I see it, it’s almost the same as saying, “God, I know that You made me, but these people that You also made who don’t even align themselves with You know better than You about my desires and my heart. Yes, yes, I’m aware that You created them also, but they’re professionals. I think that they know better. This is what modern science is saying.” Is there a consistent way that you can reconcile your Christian profession with God’s incontrovertible stance on what secular culture calls an identity? As Christians, the ground we’re standing on should be God’s word in everything, not what the world says or what a particular author says. I get challenged on this a lot, personally. If there’s some part of our lives that doesn’t align with what God says, doesn’t it have to go? I’m not saying that we don’t struggle with temptations. Sin is a daily battle for the believer, but through Christ we can have power over our sins, even victory. The problem is that many people don’t want to call homosexuality a sin even in the visible church, partly because of Bible teachers who don’t teach the whole counsel of God, but also because of our own fallen biases. If we were in the congregation together and I said, “Hey Joey/Dana, I don’t know if this is a problem, but I’ve loved fighting for as long as I can remember. I can’t help it. It’s the way that I am. I’m drawn to fights.” If you then told me, “Hey, don’t worry about it. You’re just a fighting Christian. God made you in His image, so starting fights is okay. It’s part of your identity. Christ doesn’t want you to change. Be who you are.” That doesn’t work when you give the Bible an honest reading. What tends to happen is that verses get taken out of context like the ones that you used. Maybe you’ll tell me, “Love does no harm to its neighbor?” I’d hope you’d point me to what God says about assault, murder, or even the anger from which murder issues forth (Matthew 5:22), since He made us and knows what’s best for us. Granted this analogy is a lot easier to make because it’s separate from the topic of sexuality, but the principle of conforming our hearts and minds to God’s word is the same. Violence is genuinely an activity that somebody can love doing but that stems from sin when done for the wrong reasons. Still, if we can’t call it sin without people getting offended, there’s a particular sin excluded from what Jesus died to save us from. In other words, Jesus died to save us from our lying, blasphemy, idolatry, murder, etc… just not that (name the sin). If the rich young ruler was told, “Keep your stuff. That’s your treasure. No need to let go of it.” he would’ve gone away rejoicing (though condemned). What is really problematic is telling people who are engaging in an activity that God clearly defines as a sinful activity, not an identity, that it’s alright. That’s causing believers who struggle with these desires to stumble (Luke17:2). Yes, I know I have brothers and sisters in Christ who are struggling with same-sex desires, and I’ve got my own temptations that I need prayer for. My flesh would love to hear that what I’m doing is okay, but tell me the truth from what God calls the truth (John 17:17) and I’ll appreciate it more. He says the things He says out of love for us, not to be a buzzkill. It’s for our good. As much as it hurts my self esteem, God will see the humility and give grace (James 4:6). Brokenness is a good thing for sinners, because it’s God Himself who heals our wounds. Psalm 51 is a prime example. The corrupted gospel that you’re promoting is doing more harm than the good that you say you’re doing for people. It allows for no true brokenness over sin, and calls evil good. God will not hold you guiltless. Please repent and put your faith in the true Christ, not the idol you’ve made out of Him. If you think I’m wrong, then please tell me why and where God says it. The apostle Paul commended the Bereans in Acts 17:11 for searching the Scriptures to see if his preaching was true. If you would find something that tells me I’m wrong about this (not taken out of context), I’ll submit to God’s word. I hope anyone else would put such a high value on God’s truth. It’s really hard to write this to you. I want to talk, but I’m worried about how it will be received. More than any of this, though, I don’t want to lie to you. I don’t want to lie to anybody, especially knowing that God heard what I said to you. Could I just encourage you to confront the presupposed bias against God’s clear instruction in His word to suit your preferences? It seems that you want to have the conversation, which is great. I’m all for it. I think both sides of the debate should be submitting to the clear teaching of Scripture and God’s revelation of His identity. How does Ephesians 5’s teaching on marriage not get obliterated by your interpretation of what Jesus sees as loving? How does Genesis, and Jesus’ own interpretation of the created order in Genesis (Matthew 19:4), for that matter?

    jackie’s awesome. She’s biblically sound and loves and FEARS the lord! no that does not mean she is afraid of the lord but to fear him is to love him and know him as the authority figure of your life. Like your parents. God is the father who will love you in the purest most endless way your parents will never be able to amount to in loving you. As yes, an ex gay man, I don’t need to be affirmed or accepted by anyone tip toeing around the subject of Jesus loving the LGBT. That’s who I WAS. When I gave my life back to him I gave him everything, all of my identity. You pick up your cross and follow him daily! I don’t need to be picked up by any man, by any woman, by any community, or even the church. My soul and heart belongs to JESUS and it is so well and held so perfectly by him. Why would I entertain something and continue to speak life into something he's called me out of? (edit: I just came into the part where you guys both agreed on how you don’t believe homosexuality is a sin at all 😖. Guys come on! Hate the sin & love the sinner of course but don’t be so comfortable you miss Jesus gospel! I’m going to say this out of love but it’s HIS words and warning to all of us! “Enter through the narrow gate. For wide is the gate and broad is the road that leads to destruction, and many enter through it. 14 But small is the gate and narrow the road that leads to life, and only a few find it.”. Read the gospels guys, ask his spirit to make you uncomfortable. He is not of the world!

    The Bible is primarily story, and story accepts different interpretations. That's how stories convey meaning in rich and varied ways. Arguing about interpretations is blood sport -- the victims have been women, Black people, people of color, indigenous people, and now Queer people (to name a few groups of people). Theologians must shoulder much of the blame for this state of affairs, but they slough it off like it doesn't matter. They could call out the dangers of their profession, but instead they use it to bolster their own little theological empires (built on sand). It's arrogance and ignorance at work. Shame on them, and shame on us for listening so hard to ideas that hurt people. Joey and Dana, thanks for your efforts on this channel, but I don't expect to see change in your community until the head count of the crc is around 50 people, and even then they will be fighting. There's a big beautiful world out there and I encourage people to liberate themselves from the madness. (All of this without chapter and verse.)

      “Arguing over interpretation is blood sport. The Bible is a book of stories.” Somebody hasn’t given the Bible an honest reading. Otherwise, they wouldn’t be discounting it as merely a book of stories. Something tells me that we’d like it better that way, where it has no bearing on our morals, and no requirements, just be nice and “loving.” Interestingly enough, though, didn’t you just interpret the Bible to say that it’s wrong to interpret it in its literal sense (the way that its authors meant what was written)? Aren’t you arguing for an interpretation, albeit shallow, in saying that arguing over interpretation is “blood sport?” Are you saying that all interpretations should be welcome? If that’s the case, my interpretation is that God’s word does get to tell us how to live. After all, He made us. Simple as that, but it seems that my interpretation really isn’t welcome in the discussion. The truth is that the “affirming” side, as it is called, only wants to have a discussion IF we “affirm,” too. I have something to say, and it’s what Jesus Himself said to false religious leaders like those on the LGBTQ side: 6 And he said to them, "Well did Isaiah prophesy of you hypocrites, as it is written, "'This people honors me with their lips, but their heart is far from me; 7 in vain do they worship me, teaching as doctrines the commandments of men.' 8 You leave the commandment of God and hold to the tradition of men." 9 And he said to them, "You have a fine way of rejecting the commandment of God in order to establish your tradition! (Mark 7:6, ESV) God isn’t fooled. Repent, and believe the Gospel.
