Can you be an internist at a hospital AND do Locums when you want on your weeks off? It seems like that would be the best of both worlds and maximize income. Stability of your regular job and then if you had the energy or desire to increase income for that month then you pick up some Locum shifts

I’ve been a hospitalist for 17 years and while there are significant advantages to the schedule, I will say that seven days on seven days off when they’re 12 hour days is 84 hours every other week averages to 42 hours every week.. while it may seem like you have half of the year off, You really are doing more hours than many full-time employees annually in usual schedules. You also need to consider that you’re working every other weekend in most cases, and times when you’re off many of your friends and colleagues are actually working so you don’t get to socialize with them as much as you might think. If you’re single and like to travel and have the energy to do things in your weeks off, then it can work to your advantage but when you’re married and have kids and all of your friends and acquaintances work regular hours, it can be quite disruptive to work every other weekend. To say nothing of the fact that seven days a row 12 hour days 84 hours in a week is completely exhausting so one often needs several days to recover following each block of time on clinical service.
