Big Tarpon DESTROYS Me on My Kayak
Didn't take long for a ladyfish to get picked up by this tarpon, and it flat out made a fool of me. I'm still learning how to fish for these guys, and this gave me quite the lesson. Tighter drag. Totally full spool. Ditch the mono backing (that's where my line broke). Lastly, a better way to slip from the anchor line. I'll be back out there soon, tides and weather permitting.

Kayak Sight Fishing Florida Black Drum (Day 2)

Two Days Kayak Fishing for Black Drum, Redfish, and Tarpon

The backwaters of the Cedar Key area are a kayak angler's paradise. It takes a while to get used to the extreme low visibility, but this is what makes it possible to sneak up close to tailing black drum and rolling tarpon. If you enjoy the video, make sure to subscribe, like, and leave a comment!
Cedar Key Black Drum and Tarpon

I took my kayak to Cedar Key with some live shrimp in hopes of sight fishing tailing black drum. After catching a nice one, the wind picked up and the black drum became less visible. I continued to cast lures for redfish and trout and landed a ladyfish which I kept in the bait bucket. After seeing a tarpon roll, I pitched out the live ladyfish and hooked into the fish of a lifetime. #floridafis...

On this trip I wanted to sight fish for black drum from my kayak, so I stopped at a spot where I've seen a lot of fiddler crabs in the past. In about 10 minutes I caught roughly 30. Big Florida Bluefish

After seeing posts from up and down the east Florida coast of big bluefish this January, I was somewhat expecting to finally find a pod. What I wasn't expecting was for them to be so tightlipped. That preoccupation ...

Easy Inlet Bluefish and Speckled Trout

I had been wanting to find a use for the P-Line Laser Minnow in Florida ever since using them for cisco up in Michigan. Nice job on the tarpon. Got a suggestion on your anchor setup; install an anchor trolley, it gives you options on what direction you want your kayak to face, secondly if you need to detach from it, all you do is unclip the anchor line, then come back and pick up your anchor once you're done releasing the fish...easy peasy. As for tarpon that big you gotta get off that anchor and let him pull you around. Give it time and you will figure things out. czcams.com/video/7DX2IoDPfpo/video.html

The road to that ramp was closed for about eight months and when it finally opened, and I could drive all the way down to launch my kayak, I found myself overcome with happiness. Sometimes I fish with live bait and keep it in a bucket with an aerator, but when I get down to the last bait, and click off the air pump, the droning buzz of the grasshoppers is all of a sudden all you can hear and it's the most therapeutic sound. It reminds me of being a little kid and staying at my grandma's house in rural Indiana and falling asleep to the nasally nyeah-nyeah-nyeah-nyuh-nyuh sound of katydids through the screened window that my dad would keep open. When my time comes, maybe I'll be greeted with either of those sounds, somehow.

    Dude, you are a boss. I live in Washington, and I totally understand how frustrating it must have been to show up to an oyster bed and not be able to find oysters that are above a 3" minimum. The first time I went harvesting oysters out here I was at Nemah Beach in Willapa, and I thought I was so cool for finding 10-12" oysters all over the place. Took them home and found out . . . the monsters aren't so good to eat. The size difference between pacific and atlantic oysters is crazy. Anyway, I respect that you didn't harvest oysters smaller than the minimum, because we all know those little ones are good to eat. I guess in a way too many small oysters is a good problem to have.

    On the Satsop river you can catch the biggest of the big in Coho salmon. They come in in January with the steelhead. Only us locals know this. 18 pounds is not uncommon. They are hard to fish. They only come in on high water. I've had a few on that were over twenty pounds. They are a strong fish. Pound for pound, much stronger than a king. You hook them when fishing for steelhead. But they really like an eddy and hang out there.

    • @jesse75
      @jesse75 Před měsícem

      @@ericklagos1431 you know and I know a King pulls hard, likes to hold on the bottom. The bigger they are, the smarter they play that game. But a coho is wild, jumps and twists around. A King you can maneuver them somewhat. Out fox the fox. I often fish for salmon in the river with 10 pound test. They can be line shy. My daughter and I were fishing for summer Chinook in the Wenatchee River about 9 years ago. I hooked a good sized fish with a spinner. It moved around the deep hole. Then decided to move down river and stopped on the other side of a bridge piller that is positioned halfway in the river. The place is near Cashmere. The fish stopped in a somewhat calm water. My line was around the cement piller. So I sat down, kept tension on the line and waited to see what the fish would do. Just slightly the fish would move. I had 10 pound test clear P Line. I waited about 45 minutes, sitting and talking with my daughter. Finally I said to her, well it's going to be me or the fish. I wrapped the line around my arm near the reel. I started to slowly walk upstream. The fish slowly followed. Didn't put up a fuss. I figured the fish wanted to make its way back up in the deep hole along with the other fish that were in it. Sure enough, the fish got up to the hole. I then pulled the fish on the sandy beach. My daughter and I call it " The 24 pound Bridge Fish" I commercial troll caught salmon with my uncle in NorCal in the 70's. We were fishing off of Cape Mendocino at the end of a hard day of fishing. We had caught 325 Kings that day and we were pulling in the last of our gear. We were using all brass spoons. My uncle was almost at the cannon ball, and on the last spread a big giant back came out of the water. I yelled it's a shark, my uncle yelled back, it's a salmon. That fish had been on the hook quietly without us knowing, a big one. Now it started to misbehave and trash. 150 pound mono to the blade, my uncle was struggling trying to pull the fish up to the net I was holding. Ernie said, no go. He let the fish out and all of a sudden he hit the gerdie and the fish was going back down to the bottom for a ride. " I'm going to give that fish the bens ! " , he yelled. Down at least 150 fathoms, we counted the spreads while running the fish down. The fish was still on, you could look up at the spring pumping back and forth on the wooden trolling poles commercial fisherman use. Ernie," time to come up ! ". He brought the fish up as fast as the hydraulics would let him. Fish on the surface, and mad as hell. No bens. Ernie said, get the rifle in the wheel house, " I'm going to shoot the fish ! " I ran in, the seas were calm, and now it was near dark. As I ran to the stern, I saw the line go limp in his hand, Ernie pulled it in, the meat hook broke off in the fish. He said, " 200 bucks just swam off, that fish was a good 60 pounds or more. " I've had the privilege and pleasure to meet so many salmon in person, in so many different environments. So many experiences. I hooked a 18 pound king off mushroom rock near Neah Bay. That fish gave one good deep run. Then it was an up and down pump. Go down, take line, pump up again. In the boat. Years before, Mom and dad and I went out of Westport on a charter book. Bar was rough, but outside was good sea. I hooked one of the first fish. 25 pulls was the command from the deck hand. It was a wild fish, full of pizz and vinegar. The fish was under the boat, came up the other side and was dancing on the surface. I couldn't see the fish, I was on the opposite side, but everyone was making noise in excitement. The deck hand put the net down in the water and tried to move the line off the bottom of the boat. And " crack " the pole broke in four pieces. The deck hand grabbed the line and told me to reel in as he pulled. I held the broken pole pieces the best I could while reeling. He pulled the fish in, captain came down and netted the fish. Later, after the trip, and much more excitement, we weighed our fish. Mom had caught a 35 pound King, my fish weighed 18 pounds. That fish, a Coho, was more entertaining on the boat that day, than my mom's fish. I said, sorry dad for breaking the rental pole. He said it was worth it. I've never yet met a Silver that would behave.
