Big Florida Bluefish

  • After seeing posts from up and down the east Florida coast of big bluefish this January, I was somewhat expecting to finally find a pod. What I wasn't expecting was for them to be so tightlipped. Dolphins had this big pod pinned in very shallow water and the fish were so preoccupied with avoiding being eaten that at times I was standing in the water just feet away from them. That preoccupation extended to their unwillingness to even get out of the way of a lure, let alone chase one down and bite it.
I switched tactics and floated frozen mullet under a bobber over and over again through the school thinking that, at some point, they'd have to eat. However, there had been a full moon the night before and I wondered whether they'd spent all night eating. Or maybe they were just conserving their energy for more important matters.
But finally, the dolphins backed away from the shore and the bluefish seemed to chill out some, riding a bit lower in the water, their tails trembling less and their spacing more spread out. Just as these observations occurred to me, I was at last hooked up with a biter. The action continued with about two hookups per hour until I ran out of mullet. I returned six days later, and alas, the big bluefish were gone. I guess the dolphins let them finally leave.
So, despite what seems to be the consensus, bluefish aren't always easy hook up with. It was fun while it lasted.
