Washington coho salmon fishing

  • A couple days ago I fished a new stretch of water and had the good fortune of finding solitude--and a good number of fish.
Sometimes when there's a lot of fish around I find myself worked up with anxiety. Some of it's that fun kind of anxiety that has to do with the excitement of catching fish. But there's also some of the selfish kind of anxiety that comes with wanting to have that experience to myself, and to make the most of it before it's over.
I took some deep breaths, realized (remembered?) that enjoying the experience has much less to do with anything other than my own mindset, and spared a few minutes of fishing to setting up the camera to capturing some of the goings on.
I'm not sure how I feel about taking video, especially of myself. But it does speak for itself to a degree, so I hope you like it and let me know what you think!

@@troycwalinski8325 if you're just getting into it, my recommendation would be get a Shimano Convergence 12'6" rod, or any of the Raven float rods. I would also suggest Okuma Sheffield is best reel for price. I've used the Aventa and Sheffield and I think there's no reason to spend more. But man, this Batson is really the best float rod I've ever used. I wouldn't recommend pinning for kings, but I know people do it. In that case, you'd want a heavier rod than what I have or suggested.

I was using 6-lb Maxima Ultragreen there, although I would have been using 8-lb or 10-lb Seaguar STS fluorocarbon if I had it. I think the brand and model of leader is more important than lb-test. Maxima Ultragreen and Seaguar STS have been the best for me, and I've tried a lot of different brands. I'll use Ultragreen whenever the water's not super clear.

    • @CarsonPrichard
      @CarsonPrichard  Před 2 lety

You're definitely not too late. People are still catching coho on many rivers. And steelhead will get going strong in December. I'm new to WA, too. There's plenty of info on the internet about how to fish for salmon. The biggest thing is putting in time on the water and finding good water to fish. Most of the river is not where fish hold. In general, you want some deeper water that's not flowing too fast, but with current nearby.

On the Satsop river you can catch the biggest of the big in Coho salmon.
They come in in January with the steelhead.
    Only us locals know this.
    18 pounds is not uncommon.
They are hard to fish. They only come in on high water.
I've had a few on that were over twenty pounds. They are a strong fish. Pound for pound, much stronger than a king.
You hook them when fishing for steelhead. But they really like an eddy and hang out there.

    • @ericklagos1431

@jesse75 idk how im just now seeing this but I am in no way Jealous and I fish the Sat all the time as well. Biggest was an 18lb. You may have me beat in overall weight but in no way shape or form did that coho fight harder than a king of that size.

    • @jesse75
      @jesse75 Před 24 dny

@@ericklagos1431 you know and I know a King pulls hard, likes to hold on the bottom. The bigger they are, the smarter they play that game.
But a coho is wild, jumps and twists around.
A King you can maneuver them somewhat. Out fox the fox.
I often fish for salmon in the river with 10 pound test. They can be line shy.
My daughter and I were fishing for summer Chinook in the Wenatchee River about 9 years ago.
I hooked a good sized fish with a spinner. It moved around the deep hole. Then decided to move down river and stopped on the other side of a bridge piller that is positioned halfway in the river. The place is near Cashmere.
The fish stopped in a somewhat calm water. My line was around the cement piller.
So I sat down, kept tension on the line and waited to see what the fish would do.
Just slightly the fish would move.
I had 10 pound test clear P Line.
I waited about 45 minutes, sitting and talking with my daughter.
Finally I said to her, well it's going to be me or the fish. I wrapped the line around my arm near the reel.
I started to slowly walk upstream. The fish slowly followed. Didn't put up a fuss.
I figured the fish wanted to make its way back up in the deep hole along with the other fish that were in it.
Sure enough, the fish got up to the hole. I then pulled the fish on the sandy beach.
My daughter and I call it " The 24 pound Bridge Fish"
I commercial troll caught salmon with my uncle in NorCal in the 70's.
We were fishing off of Cape Mendocino at the end of a hard day of fishing. We had caught 325 Kings that day and we were pulling in the last of our gear.
We were using all brass spoons.
My uncle was almost at the cannon ball, and on the last spread a big giant back came out of the water. I yelled it's a shark, my uncle yelled back, it's a salmon.
That fish had been on the hook quietly without us knowing, a big one.
Now it started to misbehave and trash. 150 pound mono to the blade, my uncle was struggling trying to pull the fish up to the net I was holding.
Ernie said, no go. He let the fish out and all of a sudden he hit the gerdie and the fish was going back down to the bottom for a ride. " I'm going to give that fish the bens ! " , he yelled.
Down at least 150 fathoms, we counted the spreads while running the fish down.
The fish was still on, you could look up at the spring pumping back and forth on the wooden trolling poles commercial fisherman use.
Ernie," time to come up ! ". He brought the fish up as fast as the hydraulics would let him. Fish on the surface, and mad as hell. No bens.
Ernie said, get the rifle in the wheel house, " I'm going to shoot the fish ! "
I ran in, the seas were calm, and now it was near dark.
As I ran to the stern, I saw the line go limp in his hand, Ernie pulled it in, the meat hook broke off in the fish.
He said, " 200 bucks just swam off, that fish was a good 60 pounds or more. "
I've had the privilege and pleasure to meet so many salmon in person, in so many different environments.
      So many experiences.
I hooked a 18 pound king off mushroom rock near Neah Bay. That fish gave one good deep run. Then it was an up and down pump. Go down, take line, pump up again. In the boat.
Years before, Mom and dad and I went out of Westport on a charter book. Bar was rough, but outside was good sea.
I hooked one of the first fish. 25 pulls was the command from the deck hand.
It was a wild fish, full of pizz and vinegar.
The fish was under the boat, came up the other side and was dancing on the surface. I couldn't see the fish, I was on the opposite side, but everyone was making noise in excitement.
The deck hand put the net down in the water and tried to move the line off the bottom of the boat. And " crack " the pole broke in four pieces. The deck hand grabbed the line and told me to reel in as he pulled. I held the broken pole pieces the best I could while reeling.
He pulled the fish in, captain came down and netted the fish.
Later, after the trip, and much more excitement, we weighed our fish.
Mom had caught a 35 pound King, my fish weighed 18 pounds.
That fish, a Coho, was more entertaining on the boat that day, than my mom's fish.
I said, sorry dad for breaking the rental pole. He said it was worth it.
I've never yet met a Silver that would behave.

Is Washington state just littered with deserted beautiful fishing spots? Every channel I watch from the Pacific Northwest seems to be anglers catching tonnes of fish in these scenic empty spots with nobody around. Like addicted fishings vids it's like there's a lake and river for each resident in the state. I live in BC Canada and the government has rediculous amount of not only fishing restrictions but also they limit public access to so many areas. Therefore up here we fish shoulder to shoulder next to other anglers it's more of a boys club gathering than it is a peaceful hobby.

    • @CarsonPrichard
      @CarsonPrichard  Před rokem

There's a lot of beautiful places to fish, but the regulations make it difficult. Many rivers are only open for short seasons, and access is limited unless you have a raft or boat. I moved away because it seemed to me like the future of steelhead fishing on the Olympic Peninsula looked grim. Definitely beautiful, though.
