So, how do you build aerobic endurance?
1st exercise- great 2nd- most physios will advise against this exercise... sorry! Refer to McGill big 3 for core. 3rd - great too. although reverse lunge might be safer....

I ran for over 50 years, 10ks to marathons and only gave up after a hip replacement because running is not advisable if you want the hip to last. Now 74 I do a lot of fast pace walking, hill walking and do mostly strength exercises 3 or 4 times a week in the gym. Also cardio in the gym if the weather is too bad. I find that there are periods where I feel 30 again but some when I feel 74. I listen to my body much more and allow myself to recover if necessary. A lot of it is in the mind but when you have been good ( although not brilliant) you have to accept being good for your age. You can’t compete with what you were. I will keep going until I physically can’t but will only do it by accepting the realistic constraints of age and injuries focusing on what I can still do not on what I can no longer do.
62 and injured now,for 5 months, rested iced,heat,massage,still not better,so I started running again ,and trying strength training
few year late to this vid but just found it. really good sequence. i struggle with stretching but found this easy to follow and could actually feel a conformable stretch were the instructor described! thanks James

What if it's the toe flicking out not the heel?

Well -- talking about T.Hughes -- he is for sure super strong a runner, but does he look like a healthy man of 62 ? For me his face is more like 72 -- not wanting to insult him in the least !
I am finding that when the knee drive is sufficient, it will feel like I am either lifting my knee too high or just high enough. The foot strike is feather-light because the hip flexor is still engaged giving a controlled foot lowering to the ground after the knee drive is complete. My knee drive foot begins to skid the pavement during the drive if the hip flexor is not lifting knee high enough, or if I let my leg pendulum forward without using hip flexor.

Funny how his "flawed" running style suddenly becomes unique and something great, only after you break WR. BUT before was nothing but mediocre running form and tecnique

Great runner, such a shame. I have a question James, I’m a floppy foot runner and I’m looking at dorsiflection of my foot. I have good ankle flexibility. My plan is to get to the gym on the treadmill to get time in with conscious technique and try to build that muscle memory. Do you have any drills that would help with building good form in relation to foot position.
Had to take 2-3 months off of running and man my body told me to start from scratch. I went from 9 min miles in z2 to 13-14 min miles in z2 (felt like I never ran before) It was the most miserable feeling knowing this, here I am now about 2-4 months later building up that stupid aerobic bs at 10 to 11 min pace. It's fucking frustrating
Just stumbled upon this video and would like to know if you'd still accept a running video for analysis? Being relatively novice runner (a bit over 2 years; I am 50 now) I haven't had my technique (or more likely lack of it) checked by anyone so am really curious what a professional would say and recommend. :-)

I dont think it was murder, just a very bad luck. But i understand why some people think that way cauz he was just popping up and training to his first olympics to break more records, its insane how this talent is long way gone now.
I don't really see what this keep HR *artificially* down is all about. HR is what it needs to be. Get your muscular endurance and metabolism right and the HR will go down. HR is not a goal its a measure. I do a lot of endurance Z2 but HR varies from day to day. I look at breathing and RPE. Temperature, sleep, hydration, mental stress, coffee etc all influence HR and its drift on any given day next to intensity.

I love running. But I started too late in life. I get pes anserine bursitis in my knee so it takes time to heal. But I continue to try. Like I get up and go. Now there is a lot of stretching and eating right. Going on 51 soon. And the only one in my family that runs. So I need to cut back and that's hard when I love to run everyday.
I'm 65. I used to run half marathons. Now I'm the only one in my family who can't run due to a foot injury climbing stairs. I just wish my foot would heal!
As you get older the emphasis needs to be more on maintaining your body rather than improving, especially if you are already fit/ strong,

would have been great to actually hear from the guy that ran the 2:30 at 62, no chance of interviewing him to see which if any of the advice in the video he follows?
I guess it would really come down to trying to incorporate the mechanics of textbook good form with your own biomechanics of what is comfortable for you then to find the best outcome with both ingredients.
Katata has a not ideal form but, damn he's still super fast hahah even without a perfect running technique. Makes you wonder.
I was born to run. I went for a 30 year period running most every day (I missed a handful of days when on call or international flights) I've run well over 125K miles. I just wanted to point out a runner you show later in the video running on asphalt and heel striking. That a good recipe for plantar fasciitis. Never heel strike.

He ran built his foundation in his youth running barefoot, it's that simple. Same as Kipchoge, Bekele, Haile, Chelimo, Bikila, Bolt, Rudisha etc. Trying to figure out how to run with good form wearing shoes is like trying to learn how to play darts with a blindfold on.
The big problem with running is running. There is no evolutionary, physiological nor biological necessity for it. Our bodies were built for 2 speeds, walking long distances in search of food, water or shelter or sprinting short distances either to kill prey to eat or running from a predator looking to kill and eat us. Everyone I know who have been avid runners all have knee, hip, back and feet issues, sooner or later... If you need to, look no further than the physiques of marathon runners and professional sprinters. I know which physique I'd rather have....
tl;dr: you're going too fast.
I am 42 and I have been running for last 1.5 years. I only run 5ks 4-5 times per week. Instead, I also do 1 hour full body Tabatha workout EVERY SINGLE DAY. I also quitted watching smartphones and TVs 30 minute before I go to sleep and I go to bed and sleep sharply at 00:00am no matter what. I also manage my diet with occasional 16:8 intermittent fasting. Result? I have LOTS of muscles in my leg and thigh now and I run with 440/km pace at 7am morning with ZONE 3 heart rate.m: before run, I wake up sharply at 6:00 am and I start Tabatha workout less than in 5 minutes for 1 hour. THEN I start my work at 9am and I am very much invincible. You want to run longer and faster as you get older? Then trust me, you really have to TONS of Reinforcement Exercises instead of running for longer distances. Life is long. Don't try to run far too much; do LOTS of full body muscle exercises instead. Records will follow you eventually. You are NOT competing against anyone except against yourself.
