1984 Honda CB450SC sputtering woes continued
zhlédnutí 31Před 9 měsíci
Synced the carbs, adjusted the intake and exhaust valves. Engine starts easier and idles very smoothly. No ticking or strange noises from the valves, and yet the stuttering is still present when you start to rev up the engine. Last ditch effort is to add some metht hydrate (methanol) to the gas. It's purported to clear out varnish deposits in the carb's small passages. Fingers crossed.
1984 Honda CB450SC carb sync

After cleaning and adding some new parts to the carbs it's time to synchronize them. A bit of a fiddly job, the adjustment screw on the left carb is not easy to access. But making incremental, small adjustments got the job done.

My 18 year old niece Cherry took part in rehearsing a traditional Philippine dance from the city of Baguio by the native Igorot people. I'm really impressed that these young folks are keeping their traditions alive.

Did you ever figure out why it was stumbling?
No, still not fixed. Got myself an ultrasonic cleaner and am going to have one more go at disassembly and cleaning. Never had this much problem cleaning Mikunis. Oh well.
@@hotoilhandsI just solved a similar issue can you explain exactly what’s happening? I’ll share what fixed mine if it’s the same thing
@@hotoilhands alright well, you should take the bowl with the accelerator pump off of the carb as an assembly, then fill the bowl with a liquid (water, gas, etc) and actuate the accelerator pump while looking at the brass punch at the top of the float. There should be liquid gushing out, if you see any bubbles or a stream coming out of the hole in the float meant to supply the accelerator pump then your valves (ball, spring, brass punch) are not sealing. You may need to clean that area, I ended up wrapping a bit of very fine steel wool around a cotton swab and putting it in my drill, which I used to clean/polish the seat for the ball with great results. You should also double check the fuel mixture needles housing as those small orings break and stick to the surface and produce a vacuum leak.
I'm 72 and not auto smart at all. Just did this to my 05 Colorado. And everything works again.Used a hairdryer for about a minute. The truck sat most of the ND winter, but its good now! Thanks Man. 😊
Awesome. Makes me feel good to hear I could help.
My friend, they are not "phillips" screws. They are "J.I.S." ( Japanese Industrial Standard). If you use a Phillips screwdriver in a J.I.S. screw, you run the risk of "buggering it up." Good video series. All the best!
Yes I know, I misspoke when I made the video. Most people have never heard of JIS. Thanks to differences in manufacture I had to buy metric, SAE, Whitworth, and JIS tools depending on what I work on. Lots of fun eh?
You sir deserve an award. THANK YOU SOO MUCH. I was totally not expecting this to work but out of desperation and fear of rain tomorrow I tried it. And boom. I now how a working window and door locks. I used a hair dryer and on low heat I moved the hair dryer about 6in away for a few mins. Felt warm so I stopped. Let it cool down and put it back together. Thanks again. I owe you one.
You're welcome. It makes me happy to hear that. 🙂
Screwdriver arc woks
If you mean shorting the solder points on the relay with a screwdriver it only worked once for me. Every other time it didn't so I stopped trying that. This method worked every time. So far. 😁
I've used this fix successfully on my 2006 Colorado multiple times
I had taken the VM 28 Micarb carburetor off from the bike. I had it cleaned very well but not to the level you had explained. It was dirty, the gasket maker compound had melted and it was all over. Finding out the float had many hairline cracks. No wonder the bike was running high rpm, choke was not doing anything.
Amazing what you find when you dismantle one eh? Did you find the parts you need at Hitchcock's?
Sir, I’m in desperate need of a gasket for the float bowl, the rubber intake manifold. Do you have any recommendations where I can purchase.
I highly recommend Hitchcock's in England. Quality parts and service. I've had great experience with them. They carry parts for all the British and Indian made Bullets.
Thank you for your post. It became very helpful. I had contacted the dealer and they don’t have a clue about this Micarb VM 28 carburetor 😊😊
You're welcome Peter. I've never used a dealer for this bike. I've gotten lots of tips from Bullet groups online, and a good exploded diagram of any part is a big help. Glad this helped you out.
Can you please explain about the correct ring positions while installing them. I have an electra 5 speed.
Do you mean what order the three rings go on, or do you mean how to position the ring gaps?
04 Canyon warming up the relays works for me! Thank You!
Great to hear that Danny.
All I can say is WOW! Went through your procedure and heating the relays worked. Thanks!!!
Very glad it did. You're welcome.
Why not just try replacing the relay(s)?
Well, warming them up is much easier and less risky than desoldering and resoldering on to an 18 year old circuit board. Plus I wouldn't know where to get the correct relays in my town. So the short answer is, because it's easier to just heat them up. 🙂
@@hotoilhandsfair enough. If I figure out what pn will work, I will post it. I’m versed in soldering and electronics, and I’d rather go after the root problem, which sounds like aging, sticky relays.
Heres what always works for me: take the circuit board like you have, take a hair dryer on the warm setting and heat up the relays (black boxes) for about 30 seconds, pop it back in the car. Works every time.
So exactly what I said in the video then eh? Heat up the relays to free them.
@@hotoilhands pretty much! Lol
Not only did I fix it! It looks cleaner 😂 thank you
Glad to hear it @coroeban. 👍
I’m a professional mechanic but I use these to do my own oil changes at home. Great solution. I was using 2x4s to brace them from moving. Word to the wise though. This is very obvious but I had been working long hours with little sleep when I did it. DON’T JACK UP THE REAR AXLE WITH THE VEHCILE ON THE RAMPS. I did it on a rear drive SUV luckily my Jeep was parked behind it or I would have been run over when the front wheels rolled off the ramp backward. Clearly this was dumb as hell. I drove it up on the ramps to change oil but then noticed the rear brake pads looked low. Without thinking I slid the floor jack under the rear diff and jacked it up so I could take off the rear wheels and inspect the brakes. Park position and parking brakes aren’t going to stop the front wheels and down she came. FAST! I was pushed backward so fast by the ear bumper it was unbelievable. Luckily the floor jack handle hit my jeeps tow hitch and stopped the SUV in its tracks. It did actually move my jeep a couple of inches. Left skid marks. Anyway. Be safe. It only takes a second and momentary lapse.
Good advice, glad your close call had that outcome. Anytime you lift a vehicle and crawl under bears thinking about beforehand to make sure it's stable. 🙂
I’ll be the first to comment and say.. “this is genius.” I also own a set and they are a great alternative to jacking the car up, jack stands.. that whole bit. Though, I have had them take a quick scoot backwards before, when I was trying to feather the throttle to drive up on them, with my Civic 5spd. However, never did it occur to me to use the same material we use to line our kitchen drawers and cabinets with, to fix this issue. Great video! You taught me something today and for that.. I thank you.
You're welcome.
What grease , how much ??
I just used general purpose wheel bearing grease, green in colour. Just pack it in by hand until it's filled up.
Helpfull thanks
Glad to hear it. You're welcome. 🙂
Thank you. Just one thought: your method relies on both brakeshoes being exactly equal. In my experience that doesn't happen. Still, if you are off just a little bit, the protruding shoe will wear off until they both touch the same.

6202 and 6303. I used rubber sealed bearings because I wanted to run 90W gear oil instead of grease inside the box. Use whatever brand you want, choose a better quality bearing though. All the power of the bike is transmitted over these bearings.
@@hotoilhands what's diffrs wtn both 202 & 303
The dimensions. The number indicates inner and outer diameter as well as width of the bearing. RS added as a suffix indicates Rubber Seal which is what I chose so I could seal in the gear oil I chose to use.

Hi Ben. Very nice of you to say. You're welcome, glad I could help you out. Cheers.
Hi,one more thing, you mention Pete Sniders workshop manual,do you know where I can get one? I have a workshop manual, 1990-1999.but it’s pretty basic. Thanks in advance, Kind regards Ben.
Did you just bend the caseing when you hammered it???Ouch.
Yes I did. Pretty stupid on my part. As it turned out I needed to get a new one anyway with that damaged bearing stuck in there. After I got the new one I figured out how to get the stuck bearing out. I fixed the hammer damage and kept it as a spare part. Oh well, lots of learnings.
Dude! You're awesome!!thank you!!!!
That's nice of you. Very glad if it helped. I know only too well how annoying this "feature" is.
Brilliant videos,am just stripping my box so any info helps loads.
Thank you. I took my time and watched several YT videos before and during the rebuild. I would check out EC Fix. He has lots of informative videos. Good luck, it's a pretty simple gearbox. Since I put in the sealed bearings I've had no leaks.
There’s no need to completely remove the axle and disturb the spacer etc, once the axle is clear of the sprocket carrier the wheel just moves back ,the s/arm is designed for this, also putting the machines main stand on a secure block of wood to raise the back can be helpful
I can't agree Marty. If you don't get the spacer out there's no "space" to move the wheel sideway to get it off the brake assembly. If you watch you'll see how until the spacer drops out the wheel is hanging in the brake assembly.
I can hear the motor trying to work yet my window won't respond.
Sounds like you're getting the signal out of the door control Clyde. But the window motor or gears is an issue?
Is there a part 4 on the way? 😢
Sorry Paul, I'm afraid not. My camera kept acting up and what would've been Part 4 didn't run long enough to be of use. Too bad because the issue I ran into was the washers had compressed around several of the studs. It was very difficult to get the head off. I made sure that the new washers I installed had their ID opened up a bit so when they crushed they wouldn't grab onto the studs. I don't want to repeat that struggle. 🙂
So what should be the piston to wall clearance??
The msnual doesn't say, but Tim Busby from N.Z. who has rebuilt many of these engines told me this. The piston top land diameter should be no lesd than 0.028" smaller than the nominal bore. 0.030" is better. Piston slap killed many of the engines he's worked on apparently. Hope that helps. I put in a new forged piston on that rebuild, all tolerances were good, and have had no issues. The engine pulls well.
@@hotoilhands thanks bro
Hey hotoilhands, can you please explain what other tolerances you measured
Hello, thank you for posting this. I just acquired my 07 RE 500. I am here basically for info you have posted. My bike basically sat for the past 13 years. I did clean the carb but it will run only with the enricher fully applied. If i turn the enricher off and try to work the throttle to keep it running it stalls. I am unsure if the previous owner didn't move the needle clip or what is standard needle clip position on these bikes.
I hope it helped Tom. Making small adjustments to get them working how you want is the journey and the charm of these machines I think.
@@hotoilhandsWell it started around 11 pm last night ... I had to keep the garage door down due to noise while inhaling a lot of exhaust fumes 😆...probably killed some brain cells . Anywho...as i am troubleshooting this thing - What in your experience should needle clip position be to start with? The bike is basically new ( ~260 miles on the clock). Previous owner mentioned his friend was in the carb years ago - thus my question.
Hi Tom. I'm sorry, I haven't checked my emails for some time so am just seeing this now. Are you still experiencing this problem? I have some suggestions if so.
@@hotoilhands hello and thank you for getting back with me. Soo it has gotten worse i think 😆 because in the process of adjusting and coughing back - the sprag locked up....well i know this because kicker and the motor want to turn the starter motor now...😂😂😂. Well one thing at the time. I just removed the starter motor and continued with adjustments. I now have a new free flowing header, muffler, removed air injection. I have installed Hitchcock's recommended jet kit to my mikarb vm28 - but still no ability to transition from enricher circuit to pilot idle jet or needle jet or main jet. I kept dropping the needle but this did not work i will now rise the needle - see if this work but i honestly think this Mikarb is just junk?
Is there a blockoff plate available if I decided to remove the starter permanently?
Thanks man!
You're welcome. Hope it helped.
Was able to combine a few approaches to get to the solution: From this solution, after the first one didn't get the drivers door lock working, but the passengers did work and the drivers window worked. I REdid taking out the window / lock controller and HEATED the 2 relays for 1/2 hour and ALL Worked. The other solution I NEVER had to unhook the batter cables, I only had to take out the drivers door lock and window controller and shunt the two capacitors, then reinstall. SUCCESS. Thank You
Good to hear Pete.
Bless you my man. after reading all the posts and having tried the whole shunting out the capacitors trick, I removed the whole panel out of the door, took it inside and hit it with a heat gun ever so gently for about 15 secs twice. took it back plugged it in turned the key and badda bing badda boom. like a champ. bless you again
Glad to hear it Mike.
Hello, im searching side covers for this bike.Do you have??
I have the side covers but am not parting with them. I do see them come up occasionally on eBay but they are usually pricey. Good luck.
Haw to fill oil
Hi Hridesh. Are you asking a question, or just making a comment about the video? 🙂
Sir I want cylinder inner dia and length How much sir 🙏🙏🙏🙏
The cylinder diameter, or bore, is 84mm nominal. So that's when it's new. The cylinder length doesn't matter, the stroke of the piston is 90mm. My engine had little wear on the bore so I did not need to go up a ring size, I could install rings for a new engine. You might want to download the free manual at, www.manualslib.com/download/837479/Royal-Enfield-Bullet.html, it gives the specs for the bike and is OK for some simple tasks though lacking in detail.
thanks for that, i sat it in the sun for 15 minutes reinstalled it and it works again!
Glad to hear it worked for you.
Helpful
5 ring is better or 3 ring piston sir?
I've never seen a five ring. Three is all you need for a four stroke engine like this. Cheers.
Actually there are 2 extra rings with the third (oil ring) one
@@AN-ci6iy The oil scraper is considered one ring since it acts as a whole and sits in one piston groove.
I also have a 95 Bullet, I live in NB. Enjoy your videos thanks

Have an 03 bullet 500 and trying to find shoes front and rear but am unsure what sizes to order and where to order from. Fleabay and get some from India perhaps? Any info would help a ton. Thanks Oil.
Hi Zach. I believe the 2003 model still uses the drum front and rear. They'll be the same size as previous years. 7inch front, 6 inch rear. I got the set I'm using now from an Indian vendor on Ebay, though Hitchcock's carry them as well. I spent some time studying the Ebay pics from different vendors and chose ones that to my eye looked like they were made correctly. Hope that helps.
