Ep191 Wombling From Wombourne.
A lovely cruise South from my stop at Wombourne. The locks are spaced apart and I can enjoy a leisurely cruise between each one. I find a peaceful mooring in the country.

    • @slowboatthroughbritain

  • @stephengardiner9867
    @stephengardiner9867 Před 21 dnem

    The tow path must have often been a right old frightful mess in the days of the horse drawn narrowboats. A lot of that graffiti shows a lot of thought went into the design and the colours. The cost in aerosol cans alone must be considerable. Imagine if that same effort and imagination was directed towards more constructive (and lucrative) purposes. Spring is on its way... where blossoms announce the beginning of spring... I live in Canada...if only it were so here! Can't complain though... well, actually we can, and do. Too hot and humid in the summer and too cold and damp in the winter but that is just traditional as we are prepared for such but crabbing about it is a great conversation opener!

    • @slowboatthroughbritain
      @slowboatthroughbritain Před 21 dnem

      I think the towpath was better maintained in the days of working boats. The canals had lengthsmen who's responsibility was checking locks and towpath issues on their length. I agree some of the 'artists' have a talent. But much is just vandalism 😔

    Hi Steve. Regarding passing places when it's narrow. I think it would be good to have a boaters code where if the passing spaces are on one's left, you have right of way. If the passing spaces are on one's right, then give way to the oncoming boat. When I was on that stretch I never encountered an oncoming boat, but as I was heading Eastwards, I was prepared to put my 'code' into practice.

    • @slowboatthroughbritain
      @slowboatthroughbritain Před 22 dny

      I think in general the first to the wide bit waits for the oncoming boat and pass as normal. Fortunately I have never met anyone there either.

    Thank you, Steve, for these videos - a perfect combination of gentle cruises and the occasional words about things of interest. Love them. One question, though: Bridge 36, towards the start of this video, is indicated as a turnover bridge, but since the towpath doesn't go beneath it I can't see how it's a turnover. Maybe it has been rebuilt at some time?

      Thanks for the comment it makes the effort worthwhile. The towpath switches from one side to the other. Hence a turnover bridge. Here the towing line would have to be disconnected. The bridges where the line can stay attached are known by various names. Snake or Roving, these are a more elaborate than a standard turnover.
