@MattWillisBagpiper Hey Matt, do you still recommend this product as a first bagpipe?
Yes. I think a mouth blown smallpipe makes the transition to the big pipes much easier.
@@MattWillisBagpiper appreciate it!
Matt got back last week from NAAPD. Had a blast with Jim Dillahey, Ed Krintz,David Goodman, and Greg Abbott. Forgive my spelling. You should sign up to teach. Wonderful school.
You just saved a young pipers life bro
There seems to be a larger story here... But glad to hear!
This helped me so much.
Thanks for the review Matt. I bought a set as a transition from a practice chanter and love them! They make me want to play every day!
Glad you like them!
I've had a set of Walsh 3 drone shuttle pipes for years. The only issue I have is the drones are between my ears and the chanter-I never feel like I'm hearing the instrument accurately, as a listener would. All in all, they are great instrument that I love to play.
I just recently bought a regular length Gibson Bagpipes practice chanter. It has been about 24 years since I was learning on my high school's pipes and drums band. I want to learn Scotland the brave because this is the song the pipers always start with in parades.
Hi Matt are you still using the polyester thread instead of yellow or black waxed hemp
I do, though not on every set. The combo of waxed hemp and unwaxed hemp works almost as well for me, though that said, I'm a very dry blower, so I don't tend to have moisture issues. If one is a wet blower, polyester would be my go-to choice.
dose anyone know where i can get a bagpipe
Something is telling me that this will take a while before my fingers are cooperating.
What chanter/chanter reed setup are you using here? Just curious. . . Sounds nice.
That's a 2005 African Blackwood Shepherd chanter and most likely a Shepherd reed (though it might be a Melvin band reed).
@@MattWillisBagpiper thanks, MW. I’m surprised you remembered, frankly.
Well, it's more I could tell which chanter I was playing from looking at it, and I've used mostly Shepherd reeds in that chanter for the past decade, though a few Melvin band reeds have been in rotation.
Ive never had ackland drone reeds but i have Ezee drones reeds for about 3 years on my McCallums bagpipes
Excellent!! 🏴
I've just purchased one with the speaker and ear buds .I think it's a handy to practice the fingering without disturbing the wife 🎶🎶🎶
Well done Matt, nice and clean as ever .i love your videos always interesting and usefull for thé bagpipe comunity
Appreciate the comment!
Thanks for the tutorial, and the MP3's. Like a lot of people, this tune is the reason why I decided to learn the bagpipes. Little did I know what I was getting myself in for, but it's been a great journey! Thanks again.
Outstanding, very good with the basics that are needed.
General Custer
Sounds weird in the minor key.
It is not minor, but it is in G major here, so the drones add a stridence to the sound (instead of consonance). And G maj does have a C natural, which adds to the unusual timbre. But as said on FB, can’t make everyone happy. I felt it was pretty nifty.
If you came out third, the first two must've been REALLY good, Congrats. The time my band came out third, there were ONLY TWO other bands to compete 🤣😂
The Forty and Twa
My go to to cut against is a large paint stir stick. It’s long enough to not have to worry about losing it in the bag or anything as well as position it where I need, wide enough to not worry about the punch slipping off, and thick enough to not worry about the punch going through. Plus the one I have has a ruler on it, so I can use it to measure out where the holes go, too
Cool! Thanks! ✌️🎻🙂😎
Outstanding, good teaching style and information relayed.
Glad it was helpful!
@MattWillisBagpiper My second time undertaking the GHP's. This time I'm a member of the Palmetto Pipes and Drums in South Carolina. And also with your help, thank you.
Hi Matt. Doing the homework on Bonny Dundee and Garryowen. What "rhythm word" do you use for the Grip (shows up 3 times in Bonny Dundee and 4 in Garryowen).
EDIT! I forgot the last syllable in the initial reply. Add the word dum after the " a da". So more like: "a da dum " 1 a da dum 2...
Modified my initial response.
@@MattWillisBagpiper Thanks Matt!
After a bad stroke, the electronic pipes did help me to carry on playing the pipes.
bro i'm a nepali bagpiper .Can yo give me a one bagpipe😢😢😢😢 i'm your big fannn😊😢😢
So...he's not playing the actual embellishment correctly? He's talking about skipping a step. That defeats the purpose.
I'm skipping a step? Not following you here...
There are some pipers who play the heavy D throw so fast I almost feel they are cheating, that they're not playing all the grace notes. Matt is, though.
Oh, uh. So good. Another lesson taught by your Amazing Grace video. Appreciated! (i just leave the lesson sheet up for my daily reeditions, not needing to leave your video up as a tab)
It was nice to get to this video in the series knowing already how to do a light D throw (because I had jumped ahead in order to learn how to play amazing grace for my wife)
Sounded pretty spot on - how'd you place?
3rd out of 6
The amount of ads in this video is ridiculous
That’s all up to CZcams…
Hey Matt thanks for all the great info. I don’t struggle as much with the mechanics of the doubling as I do with the timing. 4:44 is probably the most essential piece of information here. I have been working on high road to gair loch and listening to your reference mp3s. My question is why do so many pipers especially on CZcams not play their doublings properly? If you look at some videos of high road on the chanter many of them seem to hit the G gracenote before the beat. Some of these players are teachers as well.
Can't answer why other pipers play their doublings early, but at least you don't have to now! Glad you've enjoyed the video.
"a mach" means "with a kick".
Interesting thought that this would be better for band play. I would think targeting the hi G to occur on the beat would provide something for players to sync around
Hi Matt 👋, could you play the Duke of Roxburgh’s farewell to the black mount forrest
Well done. I know how hard you worked.
Absolutely incredible! Thank you for sharing this🏴
Glad you enjoyed it!
Nice job!! You guys sound great.
Thanks!
Good stuff. What grade? Did you win a prize?
Third place in Grade 3 against 6 bands total.
@@MattWillisBagpiperWell done. I’ll shoot you a note via email.
@@MattWillisBagpiper Well done, Matt. You all sounded great!!!

Thank you kindly!

Hi from Uruguay
Hello!👋
That's awesome Matt! What are the names of the tunes?
Lt Col DJS Murray The Red M&M Old Wife of the Mill Dust How Can I Keep from Singing? Braes o’ Mar Dora MacLeod The Foxhunter
Do you worry at all that a metal cleaning rod would scratch the wood?
The end of the rod is (soft) plastic, and the knurled bit I've covered in tape. Great question, and one I had thought I covered, but sometime things make it past me.
Pipes drive me crazy!....I am Scot-Irish and Englander,....7th generation US ARMY,......I hear the pipes and my blood boils,.....I just purchased pipes on line and have no idea how to play,....I am horrible at playing music but love it more than most,....save me!.....I also played a lot of ice hockey when I was younger and always listened to the pipes on my way to the skate,....I had to stop because the pipes put me in a different place,........into the fray!....always into the fray!
I just had this introduced to me yesterday by my piping instructor, so it is going to be a huge help! thanks so much!
Wonderful!
