    I’m glad I stuck with the whole video as I’ve been a satisfied polyester thread user for a couple of years now. Definitely something our band needs.

    To be honest, I was wondering just how much this product would help. I ordered a set and all I can say is they make a HUGE difference. This is a tremendous time saver for hemping all parts of the bagpipes. You are correct when you say this is a “game changer.” So glad that I got them.

    Another great video! I didn't think this would work on polyester thread, but evidently does to great effect. I have a set of these and they work fantastic. Just don't get too rough with them when squeezing.

    Yet another success by Matt. I've just ordered my own compressors for the band. Looking forward to putting them to good use.

    What a fantastic idea. I've been using the edge of a smooth table top to do this for years, but it's a hassle and not as accurate. Bought them.

      They arrived quickly, and they work GREAT. After going through your hemped joints you'll wonder how you got along without them. They can transform even a sloppy hemping job into perfection in just a few seconds. Great product, Gayle, and great review, Matt - thanks!

      @@Northernbreed1738 Wow, that's lovely to hear, thank you ... particularly turning the sloppy hemping job into a good one... that was one of my reasons for creating them, along with not having the strength needed and the portability was a bonus😆

    Very cool idea, I used two pieces of thin wooden board to roll the windings smoothly on the table (Sorry for my bad English, Googletranslator)

    Great video Matt the hemp compressor looks like it does a great Job. I use Polyester Thread instead of regular Hemp I like it better & It doesn't swell or become difficult like regular Hemp. I use Polyester thread on my Blowpipe & Chanter Polyester Thread is the way to go. May you have A Great weekend Matt & a Merry Christmas & may God's Blessings be with you & your family 🎄🎄🎄🙏🙏🙏🍀🍀🍀🍀

    That's great. I didn't expect it to work that well. You should review Chris Apps Pitch guard.

    I've always just rolled the piece between two smooth pieces of wood. About 5" long 1x2 works fine. K.I.S.S.!

    • @MattWillisBagpiper
      @MattWillisBagpiper  Před 7 měsíci +3

      I've tried that too. I never noticed is was any appreciably better than just wrapping tightly by hand. This tool was far more effective than at least my attempts at the "roll-as-you-go" method (and I've rehemped hundreds if not over a thousand instruments at this point...).

      Problem being with using a table and block of wood (or any variation of that) is if you need a quick hemp edit while on the field and there is no wood in sight!! 😁

    Does an increase in humidity present a risk of the hemp expanding and putting increased pressure on the stock? Another great video Matt!

    • @MattWillisBagpiper

      Good question, Dad... I wouldn't think so. This compressing eventually happens over time any way, with the normal process being to hemp the joint until it fits, then a week passes and you then have to add more hemp, another week passes, and more hemp, and so on until eventually it's packed down fully enough to not need anymore.
      This compressor seems to pack down the string as you go to speed up the process. On the "mature joints" on my existing pipes, it did compress them a tiny bit, but I only had to add a very small additional amount of string.
      And the normal joints don't tend to swell to the point of causing damage from moisture, so I don't think that would be the case here.

      Hi, Matt’s Dad!

  • @austinlong3052

    These compressors look like they work very well. I might consider buying them but am a little concerned about how hard they clamp down on the pipe itself. I say this because I have a 100+ year old set of Ebony Lawries and am concerned with it clamping too hard on them and possibly cracking them. Maybe I am overthinking it, but I would like some insight on this. It is much appreciated and I throughly enjoy your videos.

    • @MattWillisBagpiper
      @MattWillisBagpiper  Před 7 měsíci +1

      As noted in a text blurb in the video, Gayle recommends you "clamp" it on your finger to test how much pressure the tool is applying before using it on your pipes. Given the it's supplying even pressure around the whole piece, I suspect the chance is minimal (and also that the tool would likely snap first), but if it doubt, use a very gentle squeeze (or simply hemp by hand) on an older set,

    What weight polyester thread do you use?

    • @MattWillisBagpiper
      @MattWillisBagpiper  Před 7 měsíci

      Normal? Regular? The heavy duty stuff tends to unravel easier. I find it more effective to simply use another spool (3 to 4) of the regular stuff than fewer of the thicker thread.

      I also find that they are great for tuning pins, which is why there is a small one in the set 😀 Getting the hemp just right on the tuning pins was difficult for me!
