Why Consciousness is Immortal | The Philosophical Proof of Life After Death
Is there life after death? This documentary explores a philosophical argument that suggests consciousness is immortal, and that life after death exists in the form of “personal subjective continuity.”
This argument was first presented by the philosopher Thomas Clark, and can be found in his essay titled “Death, Nothingness, and Subjectivity.”
Today we explore the implications of this argument, including how it fits with the concept of "open individualism", as conceived by the philosopher Daniel Kolak.

Thank you!
*When discussing open individualism in the video, I use an analogy of nuclear fusion in stars to describe a general principle of consciousness. I found this analogy in an anonymous post on Reddit from a deleted account, so I was not able to give proper credit in the video.

I am simply not arrogant enough to think I a simple human am so special in all the creatures of the world that I deserve some lasting existence after death. Sometimes it seems like we have died, and you simply didn't finish the process of dying.

i don't think you can call it "seamless" from a certain perspective. it is a reset; the system accepts it, whatever it is, as itself. you reformat a hard drive & it doesn't think WTF just happened, it boots up like it was always that way. unfortunately, while that means information continues, it doesn't mean you (YOU) do. so the YOU you dies no matter what.

Totally BS argument. You're stating that both your Alex (Reborn) guy and your Alex (Renewed) are sharing a continuous consciousness with Alex even if everything that was Alex (body, mind, memories, whatever) is lost either during the LifePause event or at the moment of the death event (because deatrh is not a process or a state it is just an event, the last even any consciouseness is experiencing before dissolution; you're not entering some other state of being called nothingness when you die, you're just not here and now or anywhere/anywhen else any more). And that is ultimate bullshit, a consciousness is nothing else than the total sum of one's experience especially one's conscious or unconscious memories. With all these memories and the constructs based upon them gone (either sufficiently altered, during the LifePause thing, or totally deleted, by the death event), one's consciousness is just gone. With the LifePause thing it is replaced by something else which is sharing nothing (or at best almost nothing and in any case nothing sufficiently significant) with the previous one and with death and then birth of another being, another consciousness (or proto-consciousness, potential consciousness) is there. And what... even if we admit that with the LifePause thing there maybe a very tenous relationship between the previous consciousness and the "next" one. What does it have to do with death? Because with death the cousciousness is not modified it is just gone and there is no reason to believe anything is conserved (how? by who?) to be somehow transfered through the birth of another consciousness. Word salad... bad definitions... dubious comparisons... and unsubstanciated speculative claims... all of which without any shred of supporting evidence... that is all you have. Please come back when you have something more than that. I think this is basically bouddhist or more precisely pseudo-bouddhist BS. A kind of speculative philosophy which is never concerned with actually trying to find some solid evidence to back its conjectures. And trying to find some bizarre way to cope with the fear of death: while acknowledging that any kind of individual afterlife or reincarnation is preposterous, it's trying to find solace in some "collective humanity-wide reincarnation"... without any more evidence that it is in any way something real.

At the quantum level, there are events that will not occur unless they are being observed. This is still a mind blowing concept to me with such broad implications for the nature of consciousness and existence that we'll probably never understand them all.

Consciousness is like water. I pour myself a glass of water and it is mine, but a moment ago it was not mine but a part of all of the water on Earth. I use the water, but it will go back to the earth eventually. When you awake you use the omnipresent consciousness, like plugging into electricity. Like a light switch that is turned on when you wake you are connected to this consciousness that has existed since the beginning and will exist until the end. It is not individualized in its absolute existence, but we drawn on it as individuals. It reminds me of the Force in Star Wars. The Force existed and had meaning, purpose and influence but people did not pray to it or ask it for anything. People just had an awareness of it and tried to tap into its power. Most of us do not consider consciousness any differently than we consider our heart beating. It just is. Maybe that is what God is. Maybe God is the consciousness. I like that thought. I may adopt it after more contemplation. I am in a difficult spot right now since my wife and best friend recently died. This kind of thinking give me hope and peace. Jeff Mikl

All That is, is the essence of God or the Source of Creation. Physical reality is an illusion of Consciousness/God. I've experienced a kundalini awakening and realized I was everything and that everything is the frequency of the purest love. From my perspective, we are infinite eternal Spirits having a lucid dream of a human experience simultaneously in the infinite eternal now. We create the illusion of time and space, as well as continuity to have our experience. We also create the illusion of separation too by instantaneously manifesting separation through our major senses with our minds. There's no room for existence in non existence, we create the illusion of death, when in fact your consciousness expands back to Heaven/Oneness and you wake up from this lucid dream experience and plan your next experience. Awareness of existence or being is what we all truly are, and that will never change no matter what form you appear, you will never cease to exist, we just forget when we enter Earth from Spirit.

I don't have a gay materialist investment in there not being more to existence than what we can see, but this video is garbage. Especially the analogy with nuclear fusion. Sure, it's the same process that occurs in every star, but that doesn't mean there is some sort of universal will to nuclear fusion binding the stars together. It's an emergent phenomenon from the interaction of other forces. And as far as I can tell, consciousness is an emergent phenomenon from the physical processes of the brain. Quite frankly ghost stories are more convincing of consciousness after death than the pseudo-philosophy drivel from this video.

Consciousness is Experience. I am within. Am I aware of how my brain manifests thought? No. Do I have voluntary control over the functions of my brain? No. Consciousness is an outer shell. The expression of an experience. But the one that knows the experience is within. Like a dream trying to make sense of what Consciousness experiences. When the organism (me) dies, what is within will no longer be able to use it's host. Now where am I? Ask AI (Artificial Intelligence) in 2025. It will tell you.

Consciousness is not a creation of the human mind. Nor is observation. Observation is instead a great fallacy. We might as well consider ourselves blind when we acknowledge human senses are not absolute in the universe. It's why we don't understand existence. It's why religion exists. It's why we call things we don't understand "laws" simply because we can't understand their steadfast repeatability in our observations. Our souls are shards of a great unified field of conscious energy. When you die. You will judge yourself as you become part of the greater whole again. Everything you think you know by looking at physics, quantum mechanics, philosophy. All of it is bullshit. Meditation is the greatest form of learning you can ever do because you connect to this unified field. This field of energy which represents every human to have ever lived and every piece of knowledge they gathered back to the greater whole. We are spiritual beings, living (with EXTREMELY limited vision) in a human physical existence. Trying to break it down using tools that are essentially useless (the humans senses) is like trying to use a screwdriver alone to build and engine from scratch. You know what consciousness is. You know what existence is. You know why you're here. You have but to peel yourself away from technology and enter the thoughtless quietness which teaches you all of this first hand. It's not a case of learning like we do here. It's an instant knowing. Like an epiphany remembrance that makes your body vibrate much faster while your physical observation(s) and action is STILL. This sounds crazy but to anyone out there who really is trying to understand existence there is no greater answer than serious and consistent meditation. It is when you are not confined in human form you are able to take the restrictive goggles off and see the truth for yourself.

I agree, this is how i think about existence. The ultimate you is the pure consciousness that is shared among all living beings. But I also think that possibly there are many more layers to existence. It's not just this universe and its material body, and then above them the foundational existence layer from where the pure consciousness originates. There are more world layers in between and each of those layers have different type of bodies. One of those layers may be the spiritual world from where a soul originates. The reason why the spirit layer may exist is that this way after death you don't instantly switch perspective but have a place where you can realize that you've died and can reflect on the past life. Basically, the idea is that there are many yous existing in different worlds for different reasons, some of them are more subjective and some are less, and the ultimate you is the pure consciousness that is shared among all other yous and that lives in the infinite "ocean" of existence.

My own thought experiment is simpler. If we suppose consciousness only happens when we're alive, then it means that when we die, we will return to the same condition of non-existence and non-consciousness that we had all the millions of years before we existed. If then by dying we return to this same condition we had pre-life, and it's exactly identical to condition we were in before we became conscious, couldn't then this same condition lead to consciousness again as it did before?

The person comes from unity, individuates and in so doing longs for unity, then returns to it in whichever way counterbalances any loss. Loss is contextual, unity is the greater context. For example, many people find unity in their faith, or in a particular relationship. If that relationship or faith is healthy then it adapts to encourage the prosperity of all involved. However, our planet remains deeply divided, with each mode of awareness seemingly split off from a rooted connection in which all beings are cherished. You know this, we know this. So the individual may fool themselves that they are solely that, that the root cause of their isolation from a benevolent life is the sense of isolation itself, yet it is even in suffering that we remember our connectedness. Isolation in psychological terms is very different from the awareness that we are all one even while we suffer. Isolation combined with the feeling that it is unremitting is far worse than isolation chosen through the healthy need to differentiate, to uniquely express. The world has everything to give us, but taking it all can be counter intuitive.

I find the star metaphor rather unconvincing. Star’s still die, its fusion process ends eventually. I find myself in the position that consciousness is a product of the brain. Kind of like, light is the product of a star. I do find it interesting to see the point of view where consciousness comes from a collective whole, and has sprinkled itself across the physical. The question I would ask though is, what can we predict with this knowledge? Is it testable? I would love to see some data surrounding this.

I am aware of the consciousnesses (loved ones) that lost continuity within my subjective experience, and the notion of a general subjectivity lacking their presence seems vacuous and lacking in meaningful texture. The notion that general subjectivity skips elegantly across temporal gaps does not bring my loved ones back into my present awareness. General subjectivity sounds more like an eternal hell, when I imagine that as a beaver in the woods, I’ve ‘mercifully’ forgotten what really mattered. Consciousness devoid of memory seems pointless.

I don't know why people think it's so bad. The modern world is a wonderful place for a significant part of the population and could be for all if we took responsibility. Compared to times of antiquity our existence is next to magical. You can access information by simply reaching into you pocket and pulling out your phone. Information that only a very small group of wealthy and educated people would have access to in the past. You can choose your own path now where in the past it was chosen for you and that would span generations. I won't even touch on disease and lack of medical care. You doomers should just open your eyes take in the sight of reality. Stop letting other people tell you what your reality is but instead reach out and grab it and bend it to your will. If you don't someone else will do it for you.

There are many, especially people in the West, who believe that life is just a journey from the maternity ward to the crematorium. It’s much scarier than that. Existence and consciousness continues for eternity. To believe that it all ends, and there is nothing but eternal nothingness for you, is just plain silly, and there is not even any scientific proof for that notion. If you believe that you stop existing when you die, you are attached to your ego, because it is only the ego that dies. Once you understand the nature of the universe, there is no fear of anything and you will know the ego doesn’t even exist. So there’s nothing to get rid of or nothing to fear. There’s no danger in “death”. It’s never a crisis or emergency. “All human life and its frantic concerns are nothing more than a big act and it is you and your unconscious depths that are setting it up every day.” ~ Alan Watts

You are what the whole universe is doing right now just as a wave is what the whole ocean is doing. You are a wave and you are waving and every wave has a crest and a trough. You’ll never see a crest without a trough or a trough without a crest. What goes on must go off and what goes off must come back on. Birth and death are an illusion. The only thing that dies is the ego.
