Rescuing Another Classic Swede! The 1800 of my Dreams?
In this week's episode we travel to Atlanta and acquire a 1971 Volvo 1800E! This car is coming to me from a friend of mine, after his plans for it stalled and his interests moved elsewhere. With 205,000 miles on the clock, this New Hampshire car spent nearly it's entire life with the same owner. It's in need of reassembly, rebuilding, and rust repair, but it will make for a great summer project for the shop. Tag along as we bring another classic home, and stay tuned for more!

All that and you got a FRAM oil filter 🤔
An old trick that Jay Leno taught me. Push in the clutch and go into 2nd first, hold the clutch in, and then put it into reverse. Works 99% of the time. My 2020 R-Line does the same thing.
If the truck is powered will the stock oil pan hit ?
It won't hit but it's cast aluminum, pretty fragile
Stock grill.
I have an 81, put a 1.6td (it was a stock 85 Jetta engine) and with that extra 18-20 hp, it actually drives quite well in modern traffic, does highway speeds easily and will go over 90 if needed which surprised me because I wasn’t expecting that at all.
Very cool, my first car was an 83 242 Turbo 4sp w/ OD. Still have a mint 94 850 Turbo, under 50k miles. My new game is MK4 jettas and modified ALHs. So my kind of content. I appreciate it!

I had a 1984 as well, I bought in California back in 1988, the car has low mileage and kept for almost 4 years but I've missed that car all these years that I'm thinking of getting another one, it was a black body blue interior with gold bbs wheels. Great car and I'm looking again
Thanks! They’re out there!
any 242 action?
Slated for next year fingers crossed. I have the engine for it, gotta finish my 1800 first.
My first car, around 2003, was an 81 Rabbit diesel hatchback. 52 angry horsepower....I loved that car and deeply regret selling it.
@Long Automotive did you follow any particular guide for doing the swap? I haven't been able to find very much on the 'how to' aspect of the swap.
The majority of what I used s&p performance has as tutorials on CZcams. Just that, various forum searches, and the Bentley wiring diagram got it done
Love it ❤ .i have a 73 144e. That was my 2nd high-school car it has just been sitting since i parked it in 1999 .i want to do something similar to what you have there .but im going to go more of a touring car look
What did you use for a bell housing and transmission?
960 bell housing, mustang t5 trans
You are going to ruin the suspension, get an IPD kit with the lowered springs and have it actually handle corners, it won't be dropped to the ground, but it will handle like a race car.
Lmao we are far past that my friend
We drove by you today. My daughter really liked your car. So I geeked out a bit about how common a swap is for it. Even googled swapped volvo 240s. And this popped up. We are both impressed. She might want to build one as her first car. Great ride.
Just now seeing this..great video and music choices. I own the Black Scirocco. TY!
Thanks! Cool car!
I like it and would keep the grill original. I tried to get a used VW rabbit for my first car, but my father said no way, and since he was paying I didn't get it. I do like them and wish VW would make a retro rabbit. Similar cars are the Plymouth Horizon and Dodge Omni. I like those too 🐰✌🏻❤💋
It's rare for a reason. Not pretty.
Doesn't need to be 🤌
I’m doing the same thing soon with my 81 (lots of patina, 0 rust, 94k miles, broken timing belt)
Sounds like a perfect build platform!
I'm using Pegasus 17" with R brakes. Spacer needed though.
I have one of these trucks and an ALH that needs a rebuild that plan on installing at some point... looks fun.
I live in NC and have an unhealthy obsession with 122s. I would love to see this thing.
Thanks! It still makes it out to the cars and coffees 😀
I rebuilt an 80 rabbit sedan just for the experience of it and that's where my love of diesels began. Currently driving an 01 TDI Beetle with 335,000 miles in the clock all put on by me. Most reliable car I've ever owned and still starts even in 0F winter. Latest mpg was 51.4 if I behave. I'd love to find a truck like that just for fun.
This is the same drivetrain as your beetle! Currently 47mph but tuned up a bit of course
I like it! Keep em alive. My high school car was a 1981 Caddy diesel. It was a lemon. Clutches and head gaskets. Rust in the bed led to lots of water in the cab. I still liked it. Next was a 1986 GTI that ended up fast an got me in trouble. That was early 90s. A 1975 scirocco also.
Love to hear about it, this is the most useful vehicle I have hands down
Do you want to sell it? LOL absolutely love it man
😂 thanks!
I have to replace front and back both sides on my 65 122s. Scary stuff but this made me feel a lot better. I'm just concerned about finding fresh metal around the edges to weld to. Thanks!
If this helped you gain confidence then it justified making the whole video to me, good luck
ORIGINAL Grill
Mini trucks are where its at
geeeze truck is super clean. We have alh swapped ranger and a slammed alh golf.the motors are getting hard to find.
What master cylinders are you using. I see they’re a remote setup. Thanks.
The brand is Tilton, I can't remember sizes off hand but I need to switch them up for more pedal pressure honestly
Love it! I had a Mk2 Golf with a 2.0 ABF 16V motor, with Weber carbs. It sounded wicked and it was a stripped and caged track car. So it went well.
How much did the swap cost you? I just got my hands on one and I need to take care of rust/replace some panels first but it be a cool swap
It's not cheap. I bought most of my stuff from S&P performance, just start adding up parts
Dude this is such a cool find!
Thanks! I'm excited to get going on it!
I had a black 83 Diesel truck. It was so slow but came in handy. My Dad had red one that had a camel color interior with a gas engine he drove for almost 20 years. Both were in NC also.
I'm rebuilding my 1800ES, try to made a video every week or so. Doing a fair bit of rust repair and making patch panels. For phase I, I'm just building a spicy B20 motor with a modern ECU and coil pack ignition. Phase II, I'll probably go with a turbo B230 with custom intake / charge cooler. So, if you have any questions, LMK.
Thank you I appreciate it!
How are you getting on with this set up a year or so down the line? Any idea on what mpg you’re getting with the stage 4 tune? I’m going to be doing a 1Z tdi swap into a mk1 Caddy but using the ALH management and vnt etc. It’s a workshop truck so I’m after some real-world views on this kind of thing. Stock 90hp is a bit gutless. I drive a 110hp pd daily and that’s pretty dull too. I’ve heard that some people are disappointed with the more conservative tunes…
Looking at right at 47mpg. Honestly the only thing I don't love are the tires, but I love the wheels so idk what to do about that yet. It could really stand a larger tire for the interstate to lower the engine speed. It could also really do with more grip. In the dry it will spin in first and second, and in the wet it spins in fourth LOL. I flatly refuse to lower it, so I may do nothing, time will tell. Otherwise though, yeah it's great. I work from home but try to drive it every day for errands and stuff.
@@longautomotive thanks so much! That’s decent mpg! Maybe a LSD would be the answer, not a cheap option though. Have you looked at swapping out 5th gear to get lower rpm? Depending on what gearbox code you’re using with the engine and the diff ratio etc, it can make a big difference. I believe my 02a gearbox has a 3.1 final drive so fifth gear at 70mph should be 2300 rpm.
I got a 1999 tdi jetta with bigger injectors and turbo and wanna do the same thing with the engine, the body is just trashed. and i’ve always loved the mk1 pickup.
ALH is perfect for a work horse
I always liked the 60 mpg of my Diesel ⛽️ Rabbit! 5 speed! Traded for it new in Waco for my VW kombi van pickup!
Damn that sounds good!
Thank you!
5 cyl whit ITB's.. something i didnt know i needed in my life, it sounds AWSOME! first and possibly the only time i wont miss the turbo sound from a 5 cyl. great build!
Thank you! There's a video coming up with even better exhaust noise 😉
Looking forward to this one, stunning color combo and just the right about of work required to get out and enjoy it come NC spring.
Fingers crossed 🤞
😎👍
Keep the D Jet , in higher lands keep pushing like sea level you gonna like it , i got one i move from sea to mountain nice and easy
Awesome, the darkgreen really suits it 😊👍 Sounds like you have good plan for it😁 The only thing that sticks into my eyes are the not so nice looking us spec side markers, do you have to have them on these cars to be street legal?
No rules here for that, the requirements were for when the car was sold. Actually here there's no inspection at all for classic cars.
Why facemask,do you still have covid restrictions or is it an old video?
No restrictions, winter sickness and courtesy
@@longautomotive ok👍
😎👍
5cyls are my favorite
Next episode on the channel I'm hoping to refine the exhaust note even more 🤌
Also, what's the paint code? 094 Dark Green? Looks like what my 142 would look like if it had any paint left.
Yessir, the very same!
