Shaping the Kinesphere
Let's explore the concept of 'kinesphere' from the somatic movement world, and its neuroscientific counterpart, peripersonal space. Here's a recent excerpt from my ongoing collaboration with Ben Korta.
Many times per second, our brains catalogue incoming stimuli -- future/present/past -- within a malleable spatial bubble that influences our sense of self. The boundaries of this bubble modulate the intensity of events, the narrative of body ownership, the distinctions between self and other.
When a person has persistent pain or movement dysfunction, when they experience body dysmorphia or dysautonomia, this kinesphere becomes a crucial space to safely re-inhabit.
In class we explored balancing a pencil and interacting with nearby people, and we discussed the impact of trauma on our perception of personal space.

SOAP Charting is ruining our professional relationships

Hot take! Your charting is resting on a false dichotomy, and it is muddling how we navigate our therapeutic communication. There is a huge and crucial frame of reference that we are not used to recording, and that is the 'Practitioner Subjective'. A classroom clip on music's evolutionary and deep cultural origins. The idea here is that what we call 'music making' is actually part of a larger set of relational activities that get our bodies in sync, that help us coordinate activity and co-regulate our nervous systems. Alterations of movement that coarise with pain can tell you a lot about what specifically is irritated, and what the perpetuating f...

    I had a concussion followed by a chiro aggressive manipulation to the back of my head 5 years ago. Two head impact injuries. I’m bedridden 38 therapists 23 doctors can’t help me. 8 MRIs and multiple other things. Two therapists told me my dura is twisted neither have helped me. The pull and muscle spasms are so intense I can’t function which runs midline right back to front torso to head and culminates into the right side Atlanto occipital joint. The worst is the pressure at the base of skull and at the sternum which feels like it will squeeze the life out of me. If the body heals itself mine hasn’t. If no one can help me I’m leaving this body. I can’t understand why not one person knows how to relax that dura

    Are you talking about pain ? Or perceived pain, which is actually an uncomfortable feeling while repositioning, or exceeded reduced limits after some damage to cellular structure has previously occurred. Pain is an acute signal that accompanies immediate cellular damage. An uncomfortable sensation or feeling is the ego’s denial of the situation, and of course many “ go with the flow “ and deny reality.

    • @TheRealMikeHamm
      @TheRealMikeHamm Před 7 měsíci

      Thanks for the comment Glen. To use the agreed upon vocabulary of contemporary pain science: You are referring to nociception, which is the tissue-level ‘danger signal’ mediated by C and A-delta nerve fibers. Many authors (D Butler, L Mosely, Melzack, Wall, Bove, to name a few) take great pains (ha) to distinguish nociceptive input from the phenomenon of pain. Pain is what the brain constructs based on perception of threat. This can include incoming signals from tissues, or not. And so it is precisely perception (cortical and limbic processing) that makes it pain. This is why the same stimulus can be painful or not, depending on the environment and expections. Ego is not a precise clinical term, so I tend to avoid it. My ego loves precision!

    • @Glen-uy4jt
      @Glen-uy4jt Před 7 měsíci

      @@TheRealMikeHamm thanks for the reference material, I will be investigating more. My statement comes from studying Gong-fu as Personal Development, also on the martial side we get to experience real pain, as in joint locks as well as just an uncomfortable feeling which can contort the posture. When it comes to repairing damaged tissue many are unable to “ go there “ because of their pain. For example, fascia releases can be extremely uncomfortable but rarely does it cause damage. Poor techniques can of course cause damage related cellular tissue.
