I am an oil painter and you will find time lapse videos on this channel of my dog art and cat art. I do quite a few cat paintings and dog paintings a month as commissions and so I thought videoing the process might be fun. As well as time lapse videos of my animal oil paintings, there are also time lapse videos of my digital animal art. I try to make my digital dog and cat art as painterly as I can. I am still new to digital painting so I am still very much learning and experimenting with it myself. Finally I hope you also enjoy the time lapse videos of my more light hearted whimsical dog and cat artwork that I do in Procreate and Photoshop, as well as my naive artwork inspired by UK cities.

Beautiful painting! Thanks for the tips.
Awesome video THANK YOU

Amazing work as always, watching these work-throughs is such a help. I always learn something. I had no idea about edges until I watched your video about it ages ago ❤ One thing I’d love to see the process of is a procreate cat that has lots of stripes or other markings. I wonder how different it would be from the other tutorials, where the cats are just patches of colour?
I'll try and find one. 😀
@@sarahhallidayart Thank you so much! ❤
i discovered your channel 2 days ago and have been following all of your videos now. people post so many videos on colour theory but no one has made it so much easier and simpler to understand. Can you share a video on zorn palette as well please.
there are a few on the Zorn palette on this channel. There is quite an early one I did of a greyhound, called 'Zorn Palette Oil Painting', and also there is one of a longhaired tabby cat too called 'How To Paint A Tabby Cat In Oils Using The Zorn Palette'. Hope this helps.
Again thank you you are a truly amazing artist
Thank you so much for sharing i so enjoyed watching this
thank you for watching. Glad you enjoyed it.
Beautiful painting. Did you create the little study from a photo? I would love to see your whole preparation process as a video.
yes, i use a photo for my animal commissions. A lot of the time I cannot show the photo because they are commissions but there are some videos on the channel where I do and I show the whole painting process. 😀
Wonderful video explaining the complexity of colour Sarah. Fast moving and packed so love it! Nice motivation break before heading back into the studio.
thank you
Sorry for not being specific.. i am intending to use silver as broken color for my background ..
You want something that makes a grey, like yellow and purple. So I would try purple made of cadmium red and ultramarine deep, mixed with cadmium yellow mixed with white. For variety swap out your red for alizarin crimson. Don't be too heavy with your warm colours in the broken colour.
Thank you for your generous tutorials 😊 i’m trying to find what color combinations work for silver color. Do you have any suggestions
Are you trying to paint a silver object? If yes, you'll need to use a lot of colours to get that effect. Cool reds like alizarin crimson, cool yellows like cadmium yellow for your warms, and then blue, purple and perhaps a cool green for your cools.
Thank you for sharing 🙏

Beautiful as always 👌
thank you 😀
Que agradable es ver a una artista que sabe que la pintura es interpretación y no copia burda de la realidad. Artistas como usted ya quedan pocos, siga con su buen trabajo. Le regalo mi like.
thank you so much! And thank heavens for Google translate 😁
ipad used?

How does transparency affect a painting? And how to use it in digital art?
It affects your colour mixing and laying of wet paint on wet paint. In digital art you can lay transparent colours on top of each other, eg blue on orange. This will give you much more interesting colour combinations. Hope this helps
@@sarahhallidayart So are colors inherently transparent or opaque? Also in digital art, do we use the opacity to mimic transparency?
What a cute name, Pickle. I’m currently working on a white dog with one eye. I learned a lot from your videos on color temperature and brushwork. I’m focusing on his good eye, I’m happy to got a sharp photo with good contrast from the client 😅
@@astridtermaat3854 yes, a good photo always helps 😀
@@mayukhbanerjee1147 yes, oil colours are either opaque, semi transparent or transparent and will handle differently depending upon this. Yes, use opacity in digital art to mimic transparency in oil painting.
Somehow the way this cat is gazing reminds me Edouard Manet's Olympia
Sarah, this was absolutely one gem of a video that encompasses so much knowledge in just a few minutes. I took a whole page of notes while watching this video. You really have a way of capturing the essence and personalities of yur subjects. This Tiger lesson would really make a great instructional book as you touch on so many keys to making a successful work of art. Love what you do and also love you sharing the journey with us!
thank you so much! This weeks video is actually about that very topic - how to capture the essence of your subject. It's something I've been thinking about for a while and figured out an answer which I wanted to share on my channel. Thank you for watching
What a great video!
thank you
Sarah, Have you ever heard about just working out the white with the palette knife? After getting it out of the tube, just stir it up vigorously - no oil need. It will make it more smooth and easy!
i haven't officially read that anywhere but it makes sense as I've noticed white that have been worked into is more pliable. Thank you for sharing this. I will try giving it a vigorous stir out the tube.
@@sarahhallidayart That is a precious tip that I got from an art teacher and If It works for you Im happy by sharing It with you! :)

Hi.. may i ask if there are any substitutes for transparent yellow oxide and transparent red oxide? Can’t find those from where i am from.. thank you for so many of your informative videos
possibly, check the brand of paints you regularly use and look for yellows and reds that are transparent in colour. It should say on the tube. I use Jacksons Art website and it always says on the info next to the paint colour. Hope this helps.
Thank you so much for this video
I mix pigment and oil with my handle of my brush in a small asprin bottle until its thick, it will soften up and become runny in a few days. I love my titanium white just like that, no other way.

Hi Sarah, can you please make a video about how you achieve "transparent shadows and opaque highlights" principle of oil painting digitally using the transparency setting?
just to check i am understanding correctly, you would like a video on shadows (Procreate)?

Thank you for the info on an essential palette. Would you say this is a good palette for painting animals? In genera dogs, cats and wildlife like chimps, gorillas and monkeys?
yes, I can't remember if I have a brown in this colour palette but you may want to add one, such as burnt umber. You could also try adding transparent red oxide and transparent yellow oxide. If you watch any of my later videos you'll see how I use these in my animal paintings.
Thanks
