  • In this oil painting tutorial, I show you how to find colour in your blacks and give you some simple tips to follow where there is an absence of colour in the dark areas your reference photos. I use this dog painting as an example, showing how I added colour to it and changed the background.

    I like the tip about holding up a gray card (or toned drawing paper?) to the photo to help find color. I will try this with the next one.
    I don’t have a printer so I have to do color comparisons against a backlight screen. That’s a challenge sometimes. But I expect any home printer would not replicate colors that well either?
    Apps like ChromaMagic can be helpful, yet I like the gray card idea. It’s more my interpretation than an app.

      yes working from screen are challenging. I am fortunate to have a fine art printer and the colours are very good. As long as you always account for the backlit screen issues you can usually work around them 😀
