- In this oil painting video I attempt to answer this question and show you how understanding art theory will help you to achieve paintings that seem alive. I use some of my own artwork and the artwork of others to illustrate my points.
Reference photos - some are my own taken at Musee D'Orsay and Petit Palace. Plus for reference photos of Sargent and Zorn works see:

Beautiful painting. Did you create the little study from a photo? I would love to see your whole preparation process as a video.
yes, i use a photo for my animal commissions. A lot of the time I cannot show the photo because they are commissions but there are some videos on the channel where I do and I show the whole painting process. 😀
How does transparency affect a painting? And how to use it in digital art?
It affects your colour mixing and laying of wet paint on wet paint.
In digital art you can lay transparent colours on top of each other, eg blue on orange. This will give you much more interesting colour combinations. Hope this helps
@@sarahhallidayart So are colors inherently transparent or opaque? Also in digital art, do we use the opacity to mimic transparency?
What a cute name, Pickle.
I’m currently working on a white dog with one eye. I learned a lot from your videos on color temperature and brushwork. I’m focusing on his good eye, I’m happy to got a sharp photo with good contrast from the client 😅
@@astridtermaat3854 yes, a good photo always helps 😀
@@mayukhbanerjee1147 yes, oil colours are either opaque, semi transparent or transparent and will handle differently depending upon this. Yes, use opacity in digital art to mimic transparency in oil painting.
