What a “ Happy Accident “ to have stumbled upon this tutorial!
I will definitely follow John Wellington!
We're so glad you enjoyed!
Same here this is a great video! I know color theory very well and still learned today about ivory black and how it’s made
Where can one find more of this man! Would love to have him as an art teacher/mentor.
This is so helpful!!!
And your sense of humor is hysterical!! 😂 I promise NOT to eat M&M’s right after painting with lead white and Cadmium red. 😅
I really appreciate your approach of sharing methods and the openness to do the styles that work the best for your own art!!
Thank you for sharing your knowledge with us!!!
We're so glad you enjoyed! 😀
Thank you for sharing your talents. I’m now at a place where i feel comfortable calling myself an artist. I work in acrylics; mainly because oils have intimidated me. I didn’t realize you could correct your mistakes. I was delighted to hear i can correct my mistakes. I learned other things too. Like, it’s ok to expand my creativity and to embrace my amateur as a way to expand. I did learn about black and yellow make green; only by mixing, and not the reason why I would use it. I thoroughly enjoyed this video.
We're so glad! We wish you well on your artistic journey!
"What I love about oil painting is the ability to correct your corrected corrections" couldnt have said it better.
😁
I learned more from this tutorial than in years of watching others. Highly recommended if you want a logical grounding in color.
We're so glad you found it helpful!
I was in a normal school and our art teacher told us not to use black. We asked the question "why?" and the answer was not too bad, I think. He said, because it doesn`t exist in nature.
But we also learned white and black are NO colours, so your explanation of black being a colour (you make a colour choice) is an eye-opener and very helpful.
Thank you for watching! We're so glad you found this helpful!
This was absolutely fascinating
I didn't think I could sit through an hour about color but wow did I learn and was never bored! I always thought that black+yellow=green was actually a "mistake" and never even considered the range of possibilities! I want to go back through the video again and take notes. Thank you for sharing your deep knowledge!
Oh thank you for your kind words! We're so glad this is a helpful resource to you!
What an incredible teacher you are!! Couldn't stop watching and learned so much! I can sense your joy and love in all you do. So inspiring. Thank you!
Thank you for this! A much needed explanation of a misunderstood concept. AND reference to the work of Albers. What a great way to start the morning!
We're so glad you enjoyed it!
John Wellington is an excellent instructor… He gives you a memory to mentally retrieve as you reach into your thoughts. THANK YOU
Thank you for watching! We're so glad you enjoyed!
The more often I happen upon these art tutorials the more I appreciate that I never went to any art school beyond HS. I have just always always loved the old masters and read about them and their techniques. I could just look at a Vermeer for hours.
I AM happy that I happened upon yours today. Serendipity : )
I haven't attended a class yet, but isn't personal instruction helpful?
Great to hear! Thank you for watching!
I have learned so much here. I just started painted and am very intimidated by oil but one day I will venture into the world of oil. Thanks Mr. Wellington for this lesson.
We're so glad you found this to be a helpful resource! We wish you well on your future oil journeys! 😁
WOW, you really started speaking my language when you said, "we use expensive pigments to make black, which is an expensive pigment"! I am about to buy some more paint and am out of black. I was hesitating over whether or not I needed it, but YES, I do. 😃
😁
Oh my gosh! I could listen to your easy listening tutorials for hrs! Thanks for your tips🤗
We're so glad you enjoyed!
Fascinating! Thoroughly enjoying learning from you and reflecting.
We're so glad!
I love the name…Wellington vert-noir!
What a fascinating video. Thank you for this analysis of colour, a little of which I have learned from knitting.
Kaffe Fasset - Master knitter and colourist.
Oh interesting! Thanks for sharing!
Ive never understood why many artist teachers say not to use black - thanks so much for clearing this up.
We're so glad you found this helpful!
Congratulations on Wellington Green. It's a beauty. Thank you.
Many thanks! It really is!
thanks for this lesson on black, I was indeed taught to avoid black and appreciate this tutorial. It opens up a new pallet.
We're so glad you found it helpful!
"i think a tree grew in Brooklyn" 😂 i love your subtly dark sense of humor and way of presenting this priceless info. I don't even paint with oils but I've been obsessing over acrylics lately and most of this translates. Thank you, I'm trying to say thank you lol
You're so welcome! 😁
That was an excellent class. Thank you! As someone who went to art school and has been a professional artist for over 40 years, I had no clue that I could mix black with yellow to make dark green. So many instructors telling me to stay away from Black. This was very informative and I’m very grateful that you shared your knowledge with me.
We're glad you found it informative! ♥
Amazing discovery this is.Thank you for sharing.
Amazing discovery this is.Thank you for sharing
So enjoyed this class. I hope to hear from you again.
We're so glad to hear that! 😀
I'm very much a self taught artist - making mistakes and searching for answers as I went along. Your insight and knowledge will help me elivate my art from acceptable to a new level of understanding. Thank you so much for this tutorial John - Paul 😃😃😎😎
Glad it was helpful! Thanks for checking it out!
Thanks great talk 🌷
You're so welcome!
I'm a dry medium artist, but i still listened to this entire lesson. John is a great teacher. Very engaging and witty.
Thank you! We're so glad you enjoyed!
Thank you for sharing your love and hard work
Now I want to try mixing black with all sorts of colors and see what I get. Fun!
Yes! What a fun color experiment!
loved the phrase" married my brush" lol so true how we get "glued "to it and don't even realize it .. thanks so much for this wonderful demo and all the tips and info.. Norakag 👍👍
Thanks! We're so glad you enjoyed it!
Beautiful Wellington green! Thank you very much for this lesson. You brought meaning to things I learned 30 years ago and never did "get."
Wonderful! We're so glad you found it helpful!
The best video on color theory I have seen. Thanks for sharing ❤
You are so welcome!
Fantastic Artist, thank you..drawing good,mix color good,finaly, superfantastic...I love it...Elisa from California..
😀
Glad I found your video on making green with Black and Yellow. I am about to start an oil painting of a bridge in Besalu, Spain from a photo I too. There is a lot of greenery in the picture and I plan to paint the greens using this formula in various tones. Thanks.
Oh we'd love to see the final product! Tag us @jerrysartarama on any social media platform!
So happy to find you. Thank you for sharing your knowledge❤
We're so glad you enjoyed! 😀
I been at the University in Santa Maria ,to learn art..the teacher say ,will buy in the store all what you need, I did, when I camback she say 'starded "I said how?.she say mixi the color con oil and star ,people maked horror of paint..she say was beautiful...if I say the true,I could be out of the clase..I did go to the city, buy a books, tape, and starded...that was my learn...teacher are there to supervise paint,no teach nothing,...them with the time I learn for my self be a painter, Thank you , Elisa Finch..I love your class..Master....
I have a teacher like that. However, I’m in a senior class where the others are happy with the teacher taking the brush and ‘fixing’ their work. Not me. I am there to learn. It’s disheartening.
@elisafinch1325
Teacher are there not to teach nothing? Just to supervise? Supervise what? Well I don’t agree - if “teacher” are no there to teach why it’s a school or university? If is only to supervise, well… Perhaps is more useful to connect some friends and start a free atelier where to work and teach one with others
We're so glad you stuck with it!
It’s just paint!!! Love it!! Great lesson!!👏👏
Thank you! Cheers!
Hope you do more of these, love your dry humour.
Thanks! 😀
Fascinating. Please make more like this.
We're so glad you enjoyed!
Great video John. I went to NYAA early 2003. I remember your class. I was in Dan Thompson‘s class and Jon DeMartin. I studied Munsell but the teacher was a Albertz advocate. I went to school visual arts and that’s how I learned. I was so happy to hear you say that a color and value changes depending on the color next to it. No one ever explained why I shouldn’t use black and I don’t really use black only when I need it. Absolutely loved your video.
Thank you for your words, Nanci! We're so glad you enjoyed!
Great lesson, thanks Mr. Wellington n Jerrys. Congrats on your color
Thank you! We're glad you enjoyed!
Great video. Very on point yet hilarious at moments. Thanks! Subscribed.
We're so glad you enjoyed!
I now know things, that I didn't know I needed to know! Excellent!
Great to hear!
Thank you so much for this brilliant tutorial! ❤ I learned a lot - and you are so inspiring! 😊 Lucky ones, that have you as a teacher at art school! ✨️🙏 Greetings from Sweden 🇸🇪
Thank you so much!
Thank you for the lesson John, nice exploration of black.
You're very welcome!
Thank you! I’ve heard not to use black. This was so interesting and informative. It presented new ways to think about palette colors! I will look for more instruction from this artist/teacher.
Thanks Lisa! We're glad you enjoyed!
Great lesson. I learned so much. The Wellington Vert Noir is beautiful.
From another Jonny Quest fan - TY, John!
Glad you enjoyed it! Our pleasure!
Thank you John. My son David is an artist and we were talking last evening about mixing colour and today your tutorial popped up on my CZcams app and I have saved this so I can replay and learn more.
You have Central Park 😊❤
Thanks for watching! 😀
I appreciate your lesson on this subject very much. Thank you.
We're glad it was helpful!
I really enjoyed this video. Yes I do remember those cartoons.
Yay! We're so glad!
Very informative and encouraging class, thank you. I love that new color.
Thank you so much! We're glad you enjoyed!
Thank you Jerry's for sharing this informative video
You're very welcome!
Excellent video! This artist is articulate, organized and has a dry wit, so I am appreciative to have this opportunity to be in his studio, so to speak. Thank you, Mr. Wellington, and thank you, Jerry’s, for hosting a true professional artist/teacher. I’ve heard about using black to make green mixes, but it’s better to see an actual demo of how it works, and how black works with other pigments. Cool. That Wellington green is gorgeous, with a great range. To keep painting fresh for me, I set up thought experiments, so I feel like I’m exploring or solving puzzles: “what if I try this? Oops, that worked differently than I expected…”. Technical term of Oops! may be repeated often, haha.
Thank you for your kind words! We're so glad you enjoyed!
Thank you, your demo was very informative. It gives us permission to play and learn more about color mixing. This will be helpful when painting with acrylics.
We're so glad you found it helpful!
I have learned so much here today. thank you so much for each tip you mentioned. glad to find this video.
You are so welcome!
My first class in high school........no black. Had to learn how to mix black using ultramarine blue and burnt umber.
That's a good mix to use!
I thoroughly enjoyed this video…and yes, I was told don’t paint with black. I love you black and yellow green!
We're so glad you enjoyed!
Thank you for this lesson your vert noir is beautiful !!
Thank you too!
Thank you very much for the interesting lesson! Lately I've also been researching the qualities of the color black for the same reasons you mentioned which expands the missing palette. Thanks for the demonstration between the classic modern palette.
Thanks for tuning in! We're glad you enjoyed it!
John, what a great demo from a fantastic artist and educator whose work I greatly admire. Miss seeing you, all the best. Edye Rae Brown (NAC )
Many thanks!
A Happy Accident for me too, I thoroughly enjoyed John's explanations. Thank you.
We're so glad! 😀
I've been looking for color theory videos! So happy to have discovered your channel.
Your value vs color comments are quite heartening given that I'm a bit color blind :).
Welcome aboard! We're so glad you enjoyed!
I learned this in art school. They gave a good explanation. Once we learned to get a full range without black, we can use black not just for shadows, but to use it as a color.
Yes, exactly!
Great session today thanks for sharing I enjoyed it
Thanks for tuning in! We're so glad you enjoyed!
Thanks so much for sharing your expertise! I loved your presentation. It has helped me to understand many of the no-no’s I learned at Art college.
We're so glad! 😀
Thank you very much. I learned so much today.
Wonderful! We're so glad you found it helpful!
❤ WOW ❤
🔥 This is gold from beginning to end. Metaphors which translate to epic inner revelations.🔥
❤ Thank you.❤
We're so glad you enjoyed! Thanks for watching!
Thank you so much for this video. I have learned more from you than any video I have seen in a while. I too have been drawing since my very early childhood. I found out in my older adulthood that I can actually paint. I love, love, love to paint. Thank you so much….
PS: I go to “Jerry’s” in Greensboro, NC, and In Knoxville, TN. I am so smitten with these stores.we just need more products in Greensboro. So many colleges and universities here.
Thank you again John. Jo Burrow, Kernersville, NC
Thanks so much Jo! We're so glad to hear you're enjoying both this video and our stores! 😀
Love that your background is black, your shirt is in black and you are talking about "black" paint. :)
😀
21:50 Great words! Especially to hear an academic artist with this idea, very inspiring
♥
Thank you for this video, I found it quite helpful and inspirational. I really love your Wellington green❤ It is beautiful in itself, and as you demonstrated, a very useful green that can be mixed to suit your needs. I look forward to receiving a tube from Jerry’s very soon.
Thank you for your kind words! The Wellington Vert Noir is such a gorgeous color!
I love your explanations about colour
Too slow, too much face rather than painting
Thanks! We're glad you enjoyed!
Another view to consider.. . If you are studying the Dutch still life, lemons( symbols of sobriety), depending on the type of light.. window or candle or natural lights.. the colors are dependent on that difference. Willem Kalf was the master of the lemon.
So true about the next object. And about greens.. Good lesson. Personally I never use burnt sienna nor ultramarine blue. Both are, to me not dependable. Venetian red mixed with pthalo blue is very strong and versatile as a brown or any dark.
Pthalo blue can be mixed for any blue, unlike ultramarine blue which is really a hue.
My black is 1/3 Prussian blue, 1/3 alizarin crimson, 1/3 lamp black. Ivory black is cheap and cracks later.
You have a very solid knowledge of colors and philosophy. So refreshing! Thank you.
PS after you put down a thicker area, try blotting it with Scott’s toilet paper. It gives a great finish especially for the
varnish later.
Lead white is no more. Not since the 70’s. Thank God.
I wish I knew you. I live in Ky and I don’t have any masters to discuss true art with.
Thank you for your kind words!
Love this. Thank you
We're so glad you enjoyed!
Thanks for the video such great info
Our pleasure!
Excellent! I always wondered why we were told not to use black. Thank you!
😀
Really clear and fascinating thank you
You're very welcome!
Eye opener for me. Thank you.

You are an amazing artist and educator! If I could take class with you I would in a minute!!
Thank you for your kind words! We're so glad you found this video helpful!
Hello gentle sir, I just found you and wanted to say, what a lovely elegant, gentle and playful man you are. Such a pleasure.
Thank you kindly!
Awesome!! ❤
😁
I've known John for something more than forty years (eeeek!) but never seen him teach before now. I just have to say that damn, he's good! This is a GREAT video!
Oh wow, thanks so much for your kind words! 😁
Mr. Wellington thank you. I use watercolors but I really enjoyed this. I hope you ignore the rude comments.
We're so glad you enjoyed!
Vive le vert-noir !
🥳
Wonderful video sir. Merci
Thank you!
Your life lessons is so precious. I am going to use it in my life orientation class. I am from South Africa.
Thanks for watching! 😀
This was great! Thank you.
♥
You're so welcome!
This is very helpful cause I wondered what I was doing wrong I thought I wasn't getting my brushes clean I also wondered how so many greens seem too blue
We're so glad to help!
What a fun, informative delivery and topic that rarely gets talked about "never use black". Look at Amy Sherald - contemporary painter of African-American portraiture. Her skin tones use black and yellow exclusively for a uniquely beautiful affect.
We're so glad you enjoyed!
I like the green shading on the lemon, especially with the blue shadow. It feels like the blue shadow is bouncing some coolness onto the lemon. I totally get that's not the point of the first demonstration, though.
Just so interesting all your information so thanking you
We're so glad you enjoyed!
Hairs colorist and painter here; thank you for your knowledge ❤
You're very welcome! Thanks for watching!
Thank you all the way from Ireland
Thanks for tuning in! We're glad you enjoyed it!
I loved this on so.many.levels!! Thank you for so generously sharing your wealth of knowledge. Just fantastic.
You are so welcome!
Wonderful mindset
♥
My Art Class's were inadequate. I loved the Teacher, but there was No Instruction. You either inherently knew how to Paint or not. I just sat and felt inadequate. All I could do was sit back and admire the few students who were skilled. I did Receive A and A Plus's, but after Graduating, I felt, knew I was just a doodler. Defeat starts early in Life.
We're sorry to hear that but we hope this will encourage you to try new things!
Great video! Thank you:)
Glad you liked it!
Thank you ❤
Thanks for tuning in! 😀
