  • In this video I explain how to vary your edges in your alla prima oil painting. Varying edges will transform a painting into something with essence and soul. I use this springer spaniel as a painting demo example.

very nice video. i really like you showed 3 "versions" of the painting: one with only hard edges, one with only soft edges and the one with both (and lost edges). i saw many videos about edges and this is the best way to understand. thank you

    Great video Sarah!
I have always trouble with dragging the hair in the background… do you wipe your brush with every single stroke when you apply that?

It depends, if I am changing colour yes, but if my aim is to add a colour (a bridging colour for example) then no. I think the trick is the consistency of the paint. The more fluid it is, the harder it is to control. Also it may take me a few attempts to get it right, I can rarely do it in one stroke, but if your brush is soft enough and hand light enough that's ok.

@@sarahhallidayart that could be it.. the paint to thin.. I have the Rosemary comber brushes and love them.
      Thanks for your advice!

@@astridtermaat3854 it will probably be the paint is too thin. Straight from the tube always behaves better and you can be more brutal with it.
