I had that quest break in a really funny way, actually. So, I didn't see the trail of blood either, I was just stealing like a klepto when I found the empty house and was like, "Oh, this must be the murderer's house." So I found all the evidence, went and talked to the relevant mages, but I didn't talk to the guards about starting the investigation. So I'm guessing some quest flags jumped around and whoever I was supposed to chat with about the killer didn't have dialogue for talking about the killer so I couldn't even accuse the court mage of the crime. I just had to settle with selling the amulet.

Something you can do to save money: Fusion cores always sell for the same price no matter how low they are. If you time it right, you can exit your armor just before the core dies and sell it to a trader. They will give the same price for a full one as they will an empty one. Its a great way to profit from something virtually useless to you.

Walking under a large boss's swings is a very high level mechanic in Souls games. Instead of dodging you just use spacial placement to put yourself in the enemy's safe zone at all times possible while you chip away at them. It is one of those things that I see and instantly understand the level of understanding you have of the game.
