Any way you could link the full letter/newspaper article of Cpt. Hannum in the description or comments? The story is quite fascinating and I'd like to read more.
W manzzz he done his research and absolute perfect execution
@@hummel6364 The surface level coverage of the islands history is on the National Park Services website here - www.nps.gov/places/spectacle-island.htm
The sources are cited to individual sections, which will lead you to the national archives including both Cpt. Hannum's letter as well as the record of John Quincy Adam's speech
loved the history. it gave me a whole new appreciation for fallout 4 as a whole and its setting which i always thought was lacking. this illuminates it in a whole new way though!
This island was an OCD nightmare for me since it was so big and I felt compelled to fully surround the island with walls lol.
I just make litle villages al arround It using the landscape to diferénciate dem
my favorite part of this was doing it and realizing raids spawn inside the walls
@@FernandoSanchez-fx4os I wanted to make mini metropolises for the larger plots or and vertical relief stations for the smaller areas. Never managed to finish my vision lol.
I did this in my first playthrough too.
@@abs_nobody wtf your settlements can actually get raided I have like 2000 hours on fallout 4 and that never happened to me once

I want to beat New Vegas without leaving Goodsprings IRL this year
@@Joov Look Goodsprings is legit a really nice place. If you go, try the burgers at the Pioneer! Really good food ngl.

Holy shit man
Hope that'll be a good time for ya!
@@Joov that's a legit great idea, like being a laptop and beat it there, bad ass.
This has to be the best "without leaving" video so far. Not wholly because of the gameplay, but because of the history of this place. Who would've know such a small island would have such meaning.
the thing is... he never lied to Boston Archives. he DID write an article on the history of the island its just woven into a great gameplay video. Actually this is probably the best video essay on anything ive ever seen because the gameplay makes it fun to watch! Kudos Joov you've just made an educational Lets play

I came for the self inflicted videogame torture, but stayed for the in depth, thoroughly researched history lesson. This was a very well made video.
I was totally entranced in hearing about spectacle Island when he started, it really was great
agreed! top shelf
I left. Too much annoying bullshit
Thank you for including the real history of Spectacle Island and George's story. As someone not from the US, when playing FO4 for the first time I was vaguely aware that the Railroad faction was supposed to mirror the real-life counterpart, and it got me into reading about the history of the Underground Railroad.
I hope no one thinks I'm trivialising it, but now when building settlements that involve escaped/freed synths, I add other nods to it. A bar called The Drinkin' Gourd, a hotel called the Waystation Inn etc... It may seem silly but whenever I see those signs it prods me to be reminded of the deeper history. Now when I build on Spectacle Island, I'll build something as a nod to George, so I'll remember his story each time, too.
you put in the history of the place, i turn the red rocket station onto a shop because the roof vaguely looks like one. with an oversized minutemen flag as sail...
Joov's explanation of it made me wish for him to narrate a historical series where he explains all kinds of similar references that are usually overlooked as the players aren't from those areas.
You're more receptive to the history than most amerikans lmao. nice work
As an American, I hope you paid attention. There will be a test
"May your accuracy just work" put me into tears, truly inspiring.
this whole video was so unbelievably entertaining. From the real world connections and history, to the humor you create out of the monotony. This is the first video I've seen of yours and it absolutely will not be the last. Your storytelling and relaying of history is phenomenal!
As someone who isn't American, I really loved the history and background of this island, so thank you for all the time and effort you punt into this

This was absolutely delightful. The challenge itself was so fun and interesting, but the additional historical context was so well done. Great job!
As a history major from Boston, I am so happy you brought up these connections that make me love this game
Still watching through the VODs for this and don't know if I want to finish them first or spoil myself with the full thing.
I wouldn't worry too much. The vast majority of this video covers the first 3/5 streams as those were where most of the "challenge" had to be handled
God I love the use of DRG music, fitting to the chaos of this challenge lol. Amazing integration of the history of the island as well, just felt so natural.
I knew it sounded familier. First I thought I had a random non-Joov Video playing.
Rock and stone

I love it when creators make sections, i love it more when they don't put an ad in the middle of one. Also when did DRG music get so popular(I understand why, it ROCKS (haha) but year one it had like what felt like 4 players)
Came for the gaming, stayed for the history lesson. Thank you, Joov!
this is a wonderful and well told story, with shameless shenanigans along the way.
EDIT: thank you, joov, for this history lesson
Joov, this was amazing. Your usual can’t leave shenanigans, but I also really enjoyed your lesson on the history of Spectacle Island. A very, very entertaining and enjoyable video, probably one of my favorites from you yet.
The educational side of this video was really fascinating!
Agreed. Likely took a lot of work gathering all that historical info, I imagine most of us appreciates the effort he made
The jak and darter music is a very BIG chefs kiss 15:05
It's honestly really cool that you tied this into the story of the real island, that's such a good idea! I love it when youtubers unexpectedly go beyond just "goofy gaming content" and stuff.
As someone who loves history with a particular passion for the civil war era, I'm glad you brought up George's story. I didn't know about it before.
The way you discussed the real world history of a place through it's video game counterpart was amazing and I'd happily watch and entire series of this kind of content
Imagine the POV of a character who is trapped on the island during the events of fallout 4, after years of isolation you see a mirelurk queen (possibly the one you drove from the island) rise from the sea and attack the castle. Then a few days later you see a blimp fly over Boston and dock at the airport, and finally you must be going crazy because you see a 200 foot tall robot walk across the city and launch nuclear bombs like a football.
This is my favorite video you've done, hands down. I think you approached it with a lot of tact and really added context. I hope this isn't the last you do in this style
I went in fully expecting another one of your standard videos that I'd listen to in the background. I was pleasantly surprised to find myself fully reeled in by the history of Spectacle Island. Using this medium to open up discussion on such a profound story was is such a unique idea, and I am eager to see how this concept will shape your future content.

Damn, this is probably my favorite vid of yours. I love history, I understand that whole section may not fit regularly into your style of content, but its a welcome addition when it does!
20:25 I built on Spectacle Island a lot and that unfortunately isn't Liberty Prime, though I did have basically the same first thought. That's the Control Tower for the Boston Airport.
14:43
Bruh got the Jak and Daxter Precursor legacy music going. that's some nostalgia
Having grown up in the Boston area, I REAAALLLLLYYYY appreciate the real world history you shared in this video. I'd love to see more of that in the future.
I've really loved this series! As someone who makes games as a hobby it's cool to see how in-depth (or lacking) locations can be in different RPG games. Do you think it's good design to have a location you could just play the entire game on as a serious playthrough or challenge mode?
That's tough to answer. I don't know much about "game design" per se, but what I love about certain open world games is when they prioritize the story that the player is trying to tell, rather than the story the game is trying to tell the player (think minecraft, skyrim, FO4 etc.) That's not to say one is better than the other, just my personal preference.
I think having a place like that is best when it's incidental, rather than a deliberate choice. If your game is content-rich and polished enough, there's a decent chance you'll end up with an area or two like that just as a by-product of developing the game as a whole.
That said, I'm only just recently involved in any kind of game design, and just the art side of things so far, so consider that an unprofessional opinion. You know your games better than anyone else, and at the end of the day, your judgement is best.
@@Joov Thanks for the insight! If I ever make an open-world game I'll keep that in mind!
@@derflerp538 That's a great point as well! I've only attempted to design 1 RPG game and it felt kinda flat. I think the main issue was that it wasn't super content rich, it needed more to stay engaging then I put in. If I ever make another one I'll keep that in mind! Thank you!
I really want to see if he can survive in fallout 4 far harbor only. We're just any of the DLC exclusively
that last monolog actually brought a tear to my eye thank you for telling this Australian gamer some of Boston's history

Hi Blarg
Wait what Matt watches joov?
@@pasta1549 who doesn't, tbf?
Hi, Joov! So excited to watch this! Wish I could have made the streams of this in person, but I watched every VOD and it seemed SO fun!
First time watcher, it popped up in my reccommendations and thougth "Eh, lets watch the intro to see what is this about" and gotta say, watched the whole thing, such an entertaining video and amazing history, great video.
I never ever saw a video where it merges between gaming and explaining history but I actually like it alot more than I thought I would
15:28 I MADE IT INTO A JOOV VIDEO. MY LIFE HAS BEEN FULFILLED
Also the ending is so cool, as someone who loves history it’s beautiful to see something like this
The jak and daxter precursor legacy music at 15:00 really hits in the childhood
Hearing the deadly premonition whistle tune made my day instantly
I love watching a person play a game and also giving me a history lesson at the same time
This is the where the youtuber slowly turns into a documentary channel about super niche topics and his old fans slowly go but his new fans blow him up to a bigger channel. Seen it a few times.
I really wasn't expecting to go so deep down the Spectacle Island rabbit hole. I just wanted to see if there was anything there and I kept finding myself more and more obsessed. It's always fun trying something new as well!
@Joov I respect it. I was joking around anyway. I'm from wv I might barrow this concept and do some filming of some of the game locations and stuff. If you want ant footage of 76 stuff let me know.
Came for the video game funnies, and stayed for the mini video essay on RL Spectacle Island.
This Joov video perfectly intersected those interests!
This is like one of the best videos on CZcams I have seen. It’s a mix of everything I love video games, history, and creative fun. Great job man!
Great video Joov! The work you did to dive into the history of Spectacle Island and Boston overall with this video. Also loved the Deadly Premonition whistle at the end.
You know, this is not the content I have come to expect from you, Joov, but I have to say it was so well done. Seeing you highlight the real events a game reflects is really cool and you did a brilliant job explaining it. I hope you do more videos like this!
Spectacle Island is one of my favorite build destinations for my "survivalist/isolationist" character types when playing. Problem is there's not a lot of flat areas so I gotta get weird with my floating foundation blocks.
Try building on stilts on top of the wrecked house, it has the best views on the whole island and you can put stairs in the spot where the floor gave away on the second floor for the entrance. That’s what I’m doing in my current run.
Treat it like literally any Rust Base
It is the first time I see one of those videos of you doing a region locked in Fallout and also researching the location.
Fantastic work in between fun gameplay and making me learn something new!
The history and research you did to put all of these edits together is the reason you got my subscribe today, very cool stuff.
My new favorite thing is watching the VODs and trying to guess what will be in the main video. Watching all the grinding in the VODs was well worth it for this video!
feel like this won't get as many views for the history tangent, but that was my favorite part! Would love to see more of these combo-like videos.
The first time I've played fallout 4, I thought spectacle island was called testicle island. But I realised after a few years of not playing the game.
This is hands down one of your best videos to date. You handled the irl integration very well, you left on a serious note with no jokes, and you gave some great lessons that I, as an American, didn't know about. 10/10 job, you've truly outdone yourself with this video.
I dont even play fallout, I mainly stick around for the skyrim videos. I'm glad I watched this one though.
This was SUCH a good video, with a well-edited mix of FO4 shenanigans and real history. George's story is horrifying. Imagine getting SO CLOSE and then having it all just taken away again. Fuck.
Just got out of playing Deep Rock Galactic so that starting music made me think I forgot to close the game for a second.
Great challenge and dedication, great editing, and great history! So interesting to hear the history of this place which to me was just a kind of cool settlement location.
I really like how you dug into the history of the island towards the end. I can tell you have a passion for history. Keep up the great work!
This is a super fun and fascinating way to enhance an already great series. Even if only in a small dose, I love learning about locations and topics I might not otherwise, and having the blend with a storyline in the game makes it all the more fun. Amazing stuff Joov, I’m so excited to see more
Okay, real talk Joov, I seriously enjoyed the history you included in this video. I'm a huge history buff, and I loved that part. It's a unexpected but welcome surprise
That ending was awesome. Thank you for all the effort you put into the history part of this video! And the time you put into the challenge part too!
Really enjoyed the history lesson at the end. I don't play Fallout (in fact, watching your channel is the most Fallout exposure I've had in years) so this is my first time learning about those in-game historical lessons, and I think you're doing a huge service by shedding light on George's story. Cheers!!
The added history lesson was definitely worth it and I hope we see it from time to time in different "without leaving" videos where it is available. great vid as always
After being there for The Great Idiot Savant Proc of 2023, I was fully expecting to see the entire thing condensed into a musical montage so the main channel viewers could suffer along with us.
Another great video as always, Joov! And I appreciated the history lesson as well. Who knew edutainment was in the stars for you? The fact that you went out of your way to make that call is incredible. The dedication to your craft is why you're one of the good ones. Keep it up! :D
Can you make your content inclusive by formatting the auto captioning into closed captioning please? it is extremely hard to watch it relying only on the auto captioning sadly (I'm Profoundly Deaf)
I keep seeing your videos get recommended to me and usually I never choose to watch because I’m like I don’t understand how it works. But I decided to put it on to have something in the background while I go to sleep but accidentally watched the full video. I love history and now realize why YT recommended this video of yours. Great job! Looking forward to more.
Amazing video! Mixing real world history in with your style of storytelling in gameplay was such a great idea, I hope you can find a way to do something similar in the future!
You have to be one of the most unique and strange people on youtube..and i absolutely love it! The work you put in to these challenges is mental... superb Joov.. absolutely superb.
And such a beautiful monologue at the end... this one was honestly special man.. well done!
Wow, this has to be absolutely one of my FAVORITE episodes you've done. I absolutely LOVED the interesting history you included along with the video! Please do more cool episodes like this, I would love to learn more and see you have fun at the same time!!!
Ok i was not expecting a history lesson but enjoyed it immensely, so thank you both for the grinding and the investigating
Suddenly hearing the old Jak and Daxter music hit me with some good nostalgia. Love the video!!
Same! Surprised no one else caught that.
I really enjoyed the history part of this video. I always enjoy watching you delve into these places and find out more about it then I thought there was there when I ran around them myself.
That was one heck of a narrative at the end. I never previously knew any of the history of Spectacle Island, and your narration of "George" was very eloquent and moving. Thanks for that.
Oh, and great job finding a way to get a community started on Spectacle Island in the game.
This was cool! Love how you integrated the irl history into it.
Came for the funny video and absolutely stayed to the last second for this incredibly rich and well-researched history lesson about an island I never heard of until Fallout 4. Incredible video, Joov, you knocked it out of the god-dang PARK!
The ending bit of this was incredibly well done, and the rest of the video was a blast, good job!
I've watched a few of your videos, but the commentary at the end of this one got me to subscribe. I look forward to browsing through the rest of your videos.
Seriously one of the most informative video essays about Fallout 4, or maybe even Fallout in general, that I've ever seen. Well done!
I was curious to see how you were gonna manage the editing and story on this one after catching some of the difficulties on live streams. Glad to see the direction this went with a bit of a history lesson as well as the link to the games main plot
just wanted to say I've had a rough day and this cheered me up a lot, so thanks :]
Spectacle island wasn’t a smallpox quarantine, it was an extraction zone where visitors had the letter r removed from their vocabulary.
i think your video was beautifully executed and i can see that you've put a lot of work in it. and historical intersections are GREAT. thats a truly meaningful way to interact with a game rhat u can still be silly in
I loved the history embedded in the challenge, great video

Dude this is high quality loved the vid, you put so much more than just a simple “challenge” on this run. I’d call it valuetainment
Cannot stress how much I love this vid, the use of Start Your Journey works amazing for the mini montage
The Island is my favorite settlement, I build a whole Science Lab and role play as a Mad scientist
Last chapter of the video was great. I appreciate a serious take here. Thank you and keep up the good work!
Thanks for the kind words. It wasn't an easy subject to cover given the material being dark, but when I started finding nationally archived documents corroborating the entire story I felt compelled to tell as much as I could as best as I could. It's certainly something I'm not too used to, but I took great joy in sharing an important piece of Boston/American history.
I turned Spectacle Island into Deathclaw Island in one of my play throughs. I find it cool to have an island full of survivors coexisting with a bunch of different deathclaws and to see them fighting side by side when the island gets attacked.

this video is too good. fun and entertaining. specially liked the end, when you remarked that not every fallout fan is from the usa, so the connection between the Railroad from the game and some real railroad (i had never heard about even though we have some amount of USA history in schools here) is very much missable if you're not familiar with them
I loved that he used Jak and Daxter music. That game is my childhood.
If I remember correctly only metal boxes & tool cabinets made by the player can have loot pools, everything else is treated as a player stash
This is entirely accidental mind you, as ALL player created stashes are supposed to have zero loot pools, as the function for them is that players would use them to stash their own loot at their player created bases.
Loot pools delete items that were left inside looted or unlooted chests, as when it respawns it essentially replaces the existing list of items inside with a new randomly generated list of items
So you can see how players would be pissed off if you placed your loot in a chest and then have it all vanish to be replaced by some glue & a desk fan a few days later. That's why players are reccomended to delete existing chests and replace them with your own.
For some god damn reason, they didnt apply this to player created metal crates or tool cabinets (wall or floor mounted)
That's why your coolers, wooden boxes & red tool boxes wouldnt spawn anything but the others did. They werent meant to
This small oversight is a bane to most players who mistakingly use these items in their bases, but in your case, it is helpful to make your own loot pools
just stumbled across your channel really like you adding the history of the real island and i see your a man of culture as well watching smallant.
