1972 Volkswagen Beetle | Metal work nearing completion. 1983 Porsche 944 | interior strip.
This is a quick update video on the 1972 bug progress and a small bit of work on the white porsche 944. Life has been crazy so its taken a while to get some time in the garage. I had two days off from works so I spent them in the garage to finish up these big welding repairs. Only a few more spots to weld up and then it will be time to move on to stripping the car and spraying epoxy primer. Make sure to like, comment and subscribe so you can see future videos.

This video we tear down and assess the 1800cc engine in the orange bus. Turns out whoever owned this bus before me shouldn't have been messing with engines. Sadly this bus will be for sale since I already have two projects that need to be finished first

Porsche 944 parts car overview.

Hey all. In this quick video, I go over the new parts car. This car would have been a great project for someone if the tree hadn't crushed the back. I can use a bunch of parts along with the engine which seems to be in decent shape. Im not sure what year it is but im thinking 1983 or 1984.

In this video I took off 2 weeks from work to try and knock out as much of the metalwork as i could. I hit a snag replacing a section on the wheel well where the hood prop connects. I also got the spare tire well replaced.

Nice channel and info. Subbed :)
Thanks! Just subbed to you as well.
@@VWBrennidon ah cool thanks
Hi Brennidon , Nice progress👍🏻 step by step youwill get the restoration done,💪🏻🛠🇺🇸Greetings.Hubertus🙏🏻🇳🇴🇳🇱☮🇺🇸
Thanks Hubertus! It's a slow process but it's getting there!
Goid update. The bug seems in descent shape. You sure are piling on the projects lol
Just making sure I won't run out of content lol.
Good vid, about to do all this stuff on my 74, too. Thanks! Good pointers.
It is a big learning curve and I've still got a lot of learning to do but it's been fun so far. Good luck with your project!
at 26:40; how thick was that metal after?? Thanks!!
I'm not quite sure. The bus project has been put on hold until I finish the bug and it is currently full of parts and being used as storage. If I can get in there I'll get a measurement with my caliper and let you know.
Wouldn't it be a good idea to wear ear defenders or ear plugs.
Normally I have my earbuds in.
I removed the front panel off my baywindow,it wasnt as bad as yours, as mine still had the windscreen lip. The awkward part is bending over the thin edge that runs along the hinge sides.
@alan23463 hopefully here soon the bus will come back into the garage so I can finish it. Trying to knock out the last of the bug metalwork first though. Still nervous about doing the nose on the bus
Yeah it's worrying fitting the front panel, making sure it's all lined up snug. I've had to weld in some metal on the step area on both sides as the bus had had new arches fitted by the previous owner but the were a bit out. There was a big gap below the lowest point of the door.I finished my 72 Beetle last year. That was a big job.
That is dissapointing..... Just watched the entire video, was an excellent video. Hard to believe it ran in that condition. Just goes to show how good these are. I cheated on my bus, I bought a fully refurbished engine from an air cooled shop. Love Corvairs also !!!
tell me about it! Id love to keep this one but that auto trans scares me esp since they arent as common to find. If this were the only project I have id keep it and fix or possibly manual swap but since I have 2 other projects this one needs to go sadly. I also thought about keeping it and putting it on the backburner but the extra cash would be really nice to finish up the bug esp since im almost done with metal repairs and ill be buying all the paint supplies. Hopefully the corvair works out. Not sure wht the plans for that will be. Might just make a video trying to get it to run then let it move on to someone else. Glad you enjoyed the video. filming over such a long period i found myself sayign the same thing a bunch of times because I would forget what I had said from the previous day lol.
@@VWBrennidon It was long but I am at work lol. I really got into it. Cheers!
It was lol. I thought about splitting it into 2 videos but figured if I did that then the first half would be kind of boring so just threw it up as one long one.
I like the comfy chair!!! Beer fridge near by ?
Sadly it's on the other side of the room. But I do plan to move some stuff around
Great video.!!!! I had to laugh in the beginning about the UM..... When I edit my own vids. It's OK Well.. Ok Well. Ok Well.....😂
its a hard habit to kick! esp when you don't realize you are doing it lol.
Just found your channel and watching your vids. What happened to the ovals? Also what state are you in?
The oval with the semaphores was sold. The other more damaged oval I still need to pull out of the woods. Since it has no front beam or transaxle I'm still trying to figure out how to get it out since it's a good ways back in the woods. I'm in VA
@@VWBrennidon thanks for the response. Good find for sure. You talked about the mosquitoes being bad I figured you had to be east coast. I’m in SC.
Thats unfortunate, always something though.
Oh it gets worse sadly. Hoping to have the new video out soon
Hey bren, Nice job buddy, good to see it came out without too much drama, looking forward to the next ep. 👌
Hi Brennidon🇺🇸,Well that was a complicated job but well executed removale of the engine👍🏻,so now there is also some bodywork to do🛠.Be seeing you on the next vid.Greetings.Hubertus🇳🇴🇳🇱☮🙏🏻🇺🇸
Glad you enjoyed it!!
Nice job ! Auto trans is pretty rare !
Yes it is and it sucks lol can't seem to find parts or much info about them
I wish i had a garage like yours for my vw project. Bus is sitting out in the rain from 8 years
I feel you on that. I've only had the garage for 2 years and before that it was all outside working in the rocks and weather.
Hey bother how are you? You think they may be an extra sink cabinet for my 71
Doing good how about you. And if you are talking about the junkyard I believe there is a low light westfalia with a full camper interior along with a late bay interior
Great video man. Question for you...... I started ordering metal for my 69 Bay. Cip1 offers 2 kind of inner rockers. One is smooth as in one long piece of steel that needs to be fully welded in. The other is all notched and is called a drop in piece. Any thoughts on which one would be better ?
Hmm let me take a look and see which part you are actually talking about. Because when I did my 71 bay there were 3 pieces to it. The inner rocker which welds to the tophats(cross beams for the floor) and then the middle section of the rocker which has a bunch of circle holes and then the outer rocker which is the skin of the bus(the part I replaced with license plates lol) if you look back through my videos and find Ep. 18 I did the repair on that one
Also if you have Instagram look me up on there and it will be easier to talk. @vwbrennidon
@@VWBrennidon I did watch that episode. It looks like this drop in (inner rocker) is notched so you could just slip it up around those top hats. Can't even find the middle rockers. My issue is that my floors are good and everything under is bad. In my mind I'm thinking I can do these repairs from underneath without disturbing the floor. But it's probably just wishful thinking. Might be easier to cut a section of floor out and do the repair and welding from the top.
@pstreetgarage7304 I think with the floor in will be easier. Well partly. Getting all the old out might be harder but when putting new in I think it will help keeping everything in line.
@pstreetgarage7304 I got all of the rocker sections from busdepot.com it's called rocker panel and it's 79.95. There is another one on there that is notched in a bunch of spots also which in your case might be easier but I'm not sure. The brand I got is from the UK(just kampers I believe which is great quality)
Hey Bren, good to see you back, I thought it was Herbie there around the 4 min section, when it started to come to life, good job you did not have your hands in there, great car for parts buddy,🤙😜🍻
Thanks Joe! Hoping to get a better video out soon. The camera work on this one wasn't the best and it was rushed. But yes very glad my hands weren't in there lol.
A rabbit truck ?? I absolutely love those. I would pull the valve cover, clean it up and hang it on the wall. There is a guy on YT who is rebuilding a 928. He's quite dry and funny. His chanel is called The Artful Bodger.
Yup he had a few of them there. Along with parts and such for them. I have a couple spare valve covers for these engines so I may do that on one of them. Not sure the plan for this engine
It's rough but worth it's weight in parts a set of good used front struts is $200 on ebay headlights plus motor is $150
Got it for 300 bucks which I thought was a good deal. Also thought it was cool that it's a non sunroof car
Turn up your heat on the welding, seems cold.
I'll give that a try. Still learning how to use the welder so I'll take all the advice I can get.
Heat gun with a scraper to the undercoating works well too
Yeah I need to invest in a heat gun. It will make life much easier.
Great video! Nice to see you posting again, I really enjoy your content. The licence plates on the sill of the bus would get more attention at a car meet than a shiny muscle car 😂😂😂
I agree lol. To be the only big visible rust I figured it was a quick easy way to cover it up for now esp because I have a bad habit of starting another project before I finish all the others.
good to see you back buddy,👌
Thanks Joe! Glad to finally have a video out. Almost didn't release it because it felt like a jumbled mess. Need to get back in my rhythm
Promo-SM 😇
What?
When people take things apart by cutting wiring harnesses and doing things where they don't do. cument and bag each piece it completely reduces the changes of it ever going back together. I hope you are the exception!
The wiring harness was cut because I will be getting a replacement its old and had been hacked up by the previous owner. I'm glad I did cut it because water poured out of it when I did. Also I do bag parts and I take pictures of how it was for reference later. Even if I didn't a quick trip to Google will tell me what I need to know.
to anyone doing this repair in the future. Grind the edges off (ideally remove the doors) and the spot welds around the air vent are easy to get off with a sharpened putty knife.
Would have loved to know this when I did it! Great tip!
Super Clean
Did the same repair on the front wheel well.
Seems like a pretty common spot to rust out.
Very nice repair ! The small recip saw seems very handy
It is! The 100 bucks from Amazon. Totally worth it.
Dude I just bought a mig welder from Eastwood! Looking forward to learning.
It's really fun. frustrating when you think the metal is good and it blows out more. Once you get the hang of it you can basically do anything.
@@VWBrennidonyeah. That’s what I was thinking. I don’t have a 220 outlet at my house so I found this one that uses a 110 connection. I’ll probably do a video on it so I can embarrass myself learning how to weld. CT Garage I think taught himself how to weld and does great now. Plus my dad was a welder for many years on ships.
@SanDiegoVDubLife mine is also only 110 and I run it with gas which makes for a better weld. The bottle wad expensive but worth it. Yeah I've followed CT and he has for sure come a long way. Hoping I can get better also.
@@VWBrennidon yeah. I’m waiting for it to come in the mail. Then I will pick up some gas from a local welding supply shop. I also bought a flux core welder. Never opened the box. 😆
@@SanDiego_VDubLife I bought one too. Only used it once lol
Great video. Chasing the pinholes is never ending. What you think will take an afternoon takes 3 times as long. You are making good progress also I think a propane torch and putty knife will take off the undercoating.
Ah thats a good idea I'll have to try that! And yes the pinholes are a nightmare. Over that 4 days I felt like I got nothing done. I guess because I was expecting to knock out more than what I did.
@@VWBrennidon Always the way cheers
Hi Brandon, Here you have a lot of crispy metal so a lot of cutting away and replacing with new metal forming, good luck with the restoration👍🏻🍀🛠. Greetings.Hubertus🙏🏻🇳🇱☮🇳🇴
Should just replace the whole heater channel that is the support of the whole frame.
If this were a oval or something more desirable I probably would have dished out the money to do channels but these weren't in that bad of shape and I already had the spare metal laying around so the repair to them didn't cost me anything but time really.
I remember when 356’s were cheap and undesirable. I wonder if the 944 will be the same?
I wouldn't mind. I'm use to vw parts prices and looking at the prices of parts for these 944's I'm like jeez man
A few tense moments watching this
This one I didn't worry to much on because it had the roll cage in it so the weight was on the cage and not the inside of the door area
I watched the full vid. This didn't give me a warm fuzzy feeling but I guess it's better than come alongs and ramps
It was a little worrying lol but it worked out good
Brandon how are you? I saw my causing purchased this bus from you. Lol. How small is this world.
I know he told me last night! He said this is my cousins page and I said oh wow that name sounds familiar then when I saw it I was like hey I'm already subscribed to him! Very small world!
Great video Brennidan. The cars are rough but very well bought. Hopefully build 1 but you could always make some money on parts
Yup not quite sure the plan yet. I'd love to make it a track car again but also don't want to dump a ton of money on them either
Do a little bit of work yeah something I've learned there's no such thing as a cheap Porsche
@TwoDollarGararge I've been looking up parts prices and yeah waaaaay more expensive then the vws lol
@@VWBrennidon I've been told 9:44s are the entry level platform The price is only go up from here once you start to figure out how they work they become way less expensive I'm about $3,000 in parts in my 89 many of which I probably could have not picked up
@@VWBrennidon I just spent $300 getting my injectors rebuilt being there one year only there $1,000 getting a set of wheels and tires that will work for $400 and my fuel lines will be getting replaced for about $700 I'm not even at the 1 year only timing belt set up which is about $1,000
Hi Brendon, Rescue complied, so now I guess to work with the restoration🛠, of the items you have to do. good luck with your work👍🏻🛠🍀, Greetings.Hubertus🙏🏻🇳🇴🍀
I'm not sure what the plan for these two are. I know my daughter has kind of claimed the white one. Not sure if it will be a restoration or just a get it on the road and drive it type deal
correction 944 autos are a VW 4 speed the 928 is a GM auto
Good to meet you this evening.
Likewise! Always nice to meet a fellow vw enthusiast
Nice score for the price !
Thanks! I'm very happy with it.
hey look cheap german cars ahh I miss my mak 4 2.slow
I would advise checking out a channel called NC944er very useful guides for maintenance these cars don't like sitting so there will probably be a lot there fun it's worth it
Could get them in auto I believe it was a GM 3-speed or that could be the 928
You could make that $300 back simply by selling one rear hatch glass
Oh wow that's cool. I will for sure try and get them yard driving at least. Hopefully the engine in the red one is in decent shape and wasn't bashed on too hard.
@@VWBrennidon okay if you're using the factory fuel tank I would flush it first I fried two fuel pumps just because I wanted to hear my car run and now I'm having to pay for that mistake again because my fuel lines got filled with 15-year-old varnish
@TwoDollarGararge yeah I'll probably run a boat tank to it before I do anything. Found a registration that said 2005 and then the license plates I found in it are from 2010 so hopefully the tank isn't too bad
@@VWBrennidon here are the issues I have had with my 89 the pre 85.5 are slightly different sometimes. The DME relay may fail from Age, your seat rails may be frozen since the sunroof seal leaks ruins the passenger rear carpet and floor, sunroof seals leak as-well as the hoses that run to the back they leak or those cause the rear quarters to rot out from dumping water on the metal so much
@@VWBrennidon fuel pressure regulators die from age or shit fuel, DO NOT hit the odometer reset button the plastic gear breaks, door seals leak again old, power steering racks leaks if it's not it's empty maybe that's a 85.5 + issue.
Great vid on opening of the case. I have worked on many American engines but never an air cooled one. Great info.
This was my first time. When I rebuilt my engine for the bus I only did the top end. Figured with these cases being in unknown condition that I could play around with them and learn while not really having to worry about messing anything up.
