what is the length of the spanner? what size spanner?
Great job, how is the wrap holding up? Just about to wrap mine, any advice? 😂
Is it safe to reuse a car tension bolt after it has been removed to fit a new tensioner??
That’s a good price 👍 I just bought a 2015 T5.1 with all the toys for 6k, the bargains are out there if you look around!
Did you have to buy new bolts or use the old ones?
Use the old ones mate , as long as they’re not stripped & if they feel a bit loose on the threads you can always use a bit of thread tape wrapped around them 3 -4 times
GREAT HELP = thanks you should see my 2001 underside of my forester - it`s an good as your exterior - no salt in Australian roads . Turbo SF5 Forester all STI brakes and engine trans diff - looks stock . love subaru .
🤮
If it's not the biturbo it should be a manageable challenge. The biturbos can be real money pits when they go bad.
Does it run now? What was the issue?
Hi mate, cracking video. One of the best step by step's I've seen on CZcams. Easy to understand and to the point. Problem is this gave me too much confidence to try myself and whilst left with two brand new (not leaking) rear brake hoses I have a very soft peddle after bleeding all 4 corners :( I'm guessing I might have a unique problem, in that the rear n/s brake hose was corroded and broke, leaking the contents over the driveway over night until there was nothing left in the line. When checking the reservoir in the morning the fluid had gone down to the minimum/bottom of filter. So, I replaced both rear hoses (little to no fluid came out, no need to clamp off), then filled the reservoir back up to max, attached the pressure bleed bottle with half contents full of new fluid, pressurised to 10/12 psi and bled all four corner in this order RL, RR, FL FR until no more bubbles, kept the bottle top off with fluid and pressure, reservoir never dropped below max or introduced air bubbles. (Didn't need to change front hoses, but bleed all four as don't think its has a fluid change in 15 years.) No bubbles whatsoever from front lines. I did not pump the brake peddle or start the car at any point since the hose broke, until I finished the complete process to test. Result is a semi hard peddle when engine off and pumped a couple of times, then peddle goes soft and almost no resistance straight to the floor with engine started. It is activating the callipers though enough to stop a gentle roll forward or back. Any ideas mate? I keep reading that I might have to activate the ABS pump using INPA and a cable, as because the line on one side emptied I could have air in the module? However the reservoir never fully emptied, could the master cylinder have been run dry from the rear callipers to the back of the piston? Why would this have left a minimal amount in the reservoir and not fully drained though, may this also suggest a broken seal in the master cylinder as clearly can't be completely sealed between front and back side of piston? All I have is the BMW Scanner 1.4 software and OBD which I don't think is compatible with INPA for ABS activation. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.
Hey BenJamesNewman - I don’t usually come back to videos this old but I see your going through the motions a bit buddy & put a huge amount of detail into this comment so I thought it was only fair I respond. That is quite a unique fault, I think despite the reservoir “not fully emptying” - it’s still hard to determine if air has made its way to the module - because what “can” happen is air can travel back up the line if it’s low pressure & open to the elements (like yours - if it’s broken, it’s not sealed, there’s a pressure drop & air could have entered into the line from the break & travelled UP) - really hard to say but with the symptoms I would say there is still 100% air in the system. It may just be, air knocking about the caliper area & you just need to keep on bleeding - whilst the fluid is coming out of the nipple, a few light taps on the caliper with a hammer will aid air bubbles from detaching from the walls of the caliper, the side of the piston or the inside of the brake hose - sometimes they stay around & if they’re around they are simply compressing under pressure = a soft pedal. Once you get a bit more pressure & if feeling brave, you could take to a gravel road / car park / safe space & slam your foot on the brake engaging the ABS which will pulse and help purge air if it’s in. But ideally the computer to tell it to prime / pulse is key IF air is that far up the system. Report back! Persistence is often key.
Excellent paint job mate specially in the garden 👍👍👍👍
Decent outdoor paint job. Ive done a few on vans and cars many years ago, make sure you have good neighbours
Did you replace the bolt with a new one? I tried to do this job for days but gave up in the end because I couldn't get to the bolt. Thanks for the tip, would love to know how VW does the job
Genius having a pit undernieth the car. To work on it
If your lucky you can get it without removing the intercooler. It’s just under the bypass valve on the intercooler. Mines a 12mm with a 12” ratchet extension and go to town.
Organized and see the floor. He’s been busier than a 1 legged man at an ass kicking competition.
Genius idea with the wire mate 👏
Cheers Joey, light bulb moment eh 😃 hope your well & the van is keeping you busy!
@@retromechanic2238 It defiantly was! The van #neverendingproject 👍
Nice work mate, new subscriber 👍 I have just started making content and know how much effort it takes especially in the beginning when it gets little views,Well done
What was wrong with it
All will be revealed soon - appreciate everyone’s patience 🙏
Still waiting as IV got same problem
@@retromechanic2238 hi im a young DIYer and bought a similar car with the impression that it had a bad engine. new engine in and 9 months later the car starts and cuts out very similarly to your project, and the engine hasn't stored any fault codes. any tips on how to get to the next stage and keep the car running?
A nice handy tip or two. Hopefully VW dealers will have a tool to do the job quicker as using a spanner on it own would really rack up the hourly rate that they will rob your wallet with. Their parts certainly do that two. Just had a new Clutch kit and Dual mass Flywheel from them and it was over £1800 all done, I would hate to see how much it would have cost if they had done the work rather than my local Mechanic. Had to go genuine down to supply times and going away last weekend.
Thanks for sharing your recent repair experience!! 😃 appreciate the comment buddy.
Nice one mate , Very clear and precise ..doing mine the weekend on a 97 .
How many meters of vinyl did it take to wrap the van mate?
Glad you got another Mini back on the road, How did it pass the MOT with that chip in the windscreen? did they just not notice?
Great video, Can you remember the torque setting for the roller / water pump and tensioner, Also the 3 bolts on the camshaft pulley, Axb engine Thanks
Thanks for the inspiration I really need to get my ass into gear and get mine back on the road...She passed her MOT in 2017, got put back in the garage and has been there ever since 🤦🏼♀️
People like you give me hope that my shit heap t5 will live on. Nothing but problems lately. Thanks for the video
Well done on getting this over the line cupcake!
Great job mate!
Thank you Charlie! 😄
You have done a wonderful job. You did a nice and neat job.
Brilliant vlog and thanks for sharing buddy.
Big fan of yours, checking in. See if you can guess who this is… Nice work on the mini. Profit on that…

Cracking little car and great to see it given a new lease of life mate👌
Cheers buddy! Hope your well, your garage is looking tidy 😇 I’m now going to focus on the old T5.1 🤞🤞
@@retromechanic2238 Thanks bud, need to decide what im doing with the floor now. Great a new series whoop whoop
I would be changing the other core plugs going by how thin the one you had to claw out. . Been many many years since I have touched core plugs, and I don't recall ever seeing one as rusted so thin is the one you took out. I done remember ever having to use sealant when fitting new ones. Nothing wrong with a bit of belt and braces approach. A tinkers car is never finished as there is always something that needs doing or adjusting. May you have many miles of happy traveling in her.
Not a bad shout, the ones on the side of the block look a bit trickier to get too 🙈 Thanks for your feedback!
@@retromechanic2238 Trouble with some parts of the engine is other parts are sometimes in the way or the designer has put a bold or stud in a really awkward place as it is easier for them in the factory to deal with. Never thinking about the person that has to work on the engine down the line.
Feel really pleased for you. It’s been 10 years since my Cooper was on the road, you have inspired me to get it MOT’d this summer!!
