How to be a Rude Hiker
In my 30 years of backpacking, I’ve met all kinds of hikers. Hands down, the most obnoxious and annoying is “the Rude Hiker.” In this video, I give tips on how to annoy your fellow voyagers and be a Rude Hiker (tongue-in-cheek). 😉

How to Hike Longer, Not Faster

If we want to experience more of a trail then we must put in more miles on that trail. You don’t put in more miles by hiking faster. You put in more miles by hiking longer. This is great!!😃👍🏼. After the pandemic started and during the pandemic, my standards for trail behavior lowered dramatically!! I don’t mind mountain bikers or horseback folk or ATV people (4 wheelers and snow machines) as long as they don’t leave a plastic bag on the side of the trail that takes 3000 years to break down, full of fresh hot dog s&@$!!!

I’m 68. I don’t hike but I do Nordic walking as much as possible. A few weeks ago I visit my home town. 2 miles from my apartment building, there is a beautiful lake. One day when I was returning from it a much older fella caught up with me. He was 98 years old. He was walking straight as an arrow. I was totally impressed. I asked him, how come you don’t use poles, they really do help with balance and with walking. He said: I have them, but I never take them for such a short hikes. 😳

I think this whole "hike longer" for longer's sake is plain silly. Is the object just to see how many miles you can put in? To just say you went from point A to point B and think bravo me? Shouldn't hiking be to enjoy the topography, to stop and wonder how those rocks were formed, listen to the wind around a lake, etc? Isn't sitting quietly and having coffee and something to eat in the morning and enjoying nature the point of hiking? You make it sound like it's just hump hump hump look how far I went today, wheeee. Even to the point where you talk about "cold camping" just to save time. Bah, Humbug!

    • @TheHikingRev

Thanks Ebenezer, I mean, Gary. The purpose of the video is to help those who WANT to hike more miles without feeling that you have to hike faster. Believe it or not, there are people who LIKE to hike big miles while “enjoying nature.” You can see and enjoy more of nature “on your feet” than you can “in your tent.” 😳 BUTTTT…HYOH, hike your own hike. You have to decide, is this trip a camping trip or a hiking trip. If it’s a hiking trip, then this video will help you “hump, hump, hump,” get more miles in the day and enjoy and see more of nature. If it’s a camping trip, then load up your camp chair and your 50 pounds of equipment and “enjoy nature.” 😁

I'm definitely guilty of carrying too much. On my first 2 day hike through the wilderness I had to hang stuff outside my backpack because it wouldn't fit inside the pack anymore. Now my wife and I trimmed down our gear so much that we can fit everything inside the back. We did this by going lighter and a little smaller in general. For example we found a 2 person tent that actually fits 2 people (Hilleberg Anjan 2, IIRC. I can't check right now) and we replaced the old, very sturdy and bulky footprint as well. Now my pack is lighter even with my 2L water bladded filled up, so that definitely helps. I also still underestimate practice hikes. Luckily my wife doesn't. :) Not testing out gear is one mistake I see or read about quite often. For example, I was browsing through reviews for a gas stove, and found a one star review, where the person said "bought this new, and brought it to the Grand Canyon, where I unpacked it. Doesn't work". And I'm like: WHAT? Who in their right mind brings an unopened, untested stove on a camping trip??

When I go uphill, it's long slow flatfood strides, looking uphill. As a kid, I always looked at my feet. But as a young adult now, I look up to the top. Moving feet forward in a V with each step. Start steps close, then move them outward and forward. I'm able to get away with long strides uphill, because I am young. It's not the same when your old, since I'm able to brush the sore and pain to the side.

If the trail is wide enough, or if you are on an expansive slope, walk in a S traverse pattern like a downhill skier. Don't walk straight up a steep slope. The incline is less per step which requires less energy, so you will not burn your muscles out quickly. Certainly it requires more steps, but your legs will last longer, and the walking is more pleasant - more time to enjoy the view. The same goes for walking downhill on a steep slope. Walking straight down a slope is difficult to control and dangerous - but it is easier while traversing side to side.

I do a lot of canyon hikes and above tree-line hikes. It is best practice to poop in a wag-bag and pack it out. There is NOTHING that irks me more than to see a trail lined with little blue and green bags of human poop tucked into rocks and cracks. In my opinion, that is worse than just pooping on the trail as it is never going to go away until someone packs out the poop bag. At the camp site - having to listen to someone's phone constantly alert them about the arrival of every email, message, and facebook post is maddening. It's like trying to sleep in a Chucky Cheese or video arcade. beep, beep, ding, thwap, chaching,...... And on top of that, is when they have the sound turned on for every letter they press when responding to all those messages. Well, Rev - I think my blood pressure is rising after thinking about all this.😁 I need to go take a hike to chill out. 🥾

Hmmm. I am five minutes into the video. I stopped. I read maybe 10 comments. The rude are usually rued And they don't realize either. Then there are those who mount their soapbox and espouse rudimentary suggestions coupled with their judgment of others. If I'm hiking, do I have to be verbal when I greet someone? Can I wave? If someone's hiking slower than me and I want to pass them and they don't notice, do I seethe? Or do I say the same thing when I am walking anywhere and someone is in my path, " excuse me please". If they apologize as people are want to do in the supermarket aisles, I point Out they don't need to apologize for walking, then thank them, and keep moving. Dog poop. I say to everyone with a dog,, "What a nice dog that is with you. I like seeing dogs on the trail. I just don't believe some people when they don't clean their feces out of the path." If they are defensive, tell them you weren't Saying that they did not clean up after the dog with them. This one's a tad passive aggressive but it does get the word out to many dog people. Eventually it will reach the inconsiderate ones. The poop in the video doesn't look like dog poop though. Loud music. " hey that's Barry Manilow isn't it? My mom likes to crank him up too. My dad doesn't like it. Especially when he is outside. ". Belching/farting. Sometimes they just can't be stifled. As a contest is usually done by males under the age Of 20. Many Kids are really stupid. I did not participate in body noise contests, except for the hand under the opposite armpit. I did a host of other things that were really stupid. Say something to them if you like! Why not? You expect others to speak to you. Cuts both ways

Thanks for your comments. The reason most people watch CZcams videos is to get a different perspective on the way to do things. It’s like eating at a cafeteria. Nobody forced you to go in. If you don’t like the food that’s in front of you just move on. Don’t spit in it. Don’t criticize it. Don’t disagree with it. Just move on. Perhaps you may find out that you really do like cream spinach. But you’ll never know until you try it. I hate you only watched five minutes. The best was yet to come. By the way, I did not say to verbally respond. I just said you need to respond. (I’ll get off my soapbox now.) 😁

I watched the rest later. It was consistent with the first five minutes, And your response now. I look on life as a trail. Everything everyone is doing, every moment of the day is part of the trail leading to the next plane of existence. Every word, billboard, T-shirt, bumper sticker, CZcams video is just like a person saying it to you. Hence If something is unclear I ask. If something smells like dung on The trail, I point it out, oft times Removing it. Now I have never seen the data that tells me what "most people" are doing on CZcams. I do know on my trail I do my best to help others. When I see some loud talking, dung slinging, Holier than thou, problem Complainer with no solutions offered. I point that out. We are never too old to learn. There was a time I was too stubborn and too full of myself to learn. But we are all born knowing That the solution is treating others kindly. It certainly is not mocking their Socially inept behavior without trying to help them

Right on the ball Rev. By far the worst is the hunting group that arrives late by 4 x 4 and gets loaded and loud and downright dangerous letting off firearms indiscriminately necessitating everyone else to vacate the shelter/camp in the wee small hours.

I agree with all of these, except for the mandatory greeting. There are many reasons I may not greet on the trail. 1) The trail is so busy with hundreds passing, so my voice gets sore. As an introvert, it's actually exhausting to greet so many times hour after hour. 2) I go hiking to get away from people, and to mindfully observe nature. I prefer to listen to the birds and the wind, than human chatter. 3) Especially while ascending, I'm working on rhythmic nasal breathing. Using my voice isn't always possible if I'm out of breath. If I'm exhausted, I'm trying to conserve as much energy as possible. As an introvert, too much social interaction really does exhaust me. 🙏

I can’t tell you how much a loved this! As an avid hiker in the PNW I’ve watched the trails get busier and busier with outdoor enthusiasts. If we can all remember some basic hiker etiquette and give a little grace it will be a much better experience for everyone. Happy Hiking!
