Vinny, Steam hasn't had quality control in years. I could put up empty folders and sell it so long as I gave Gaben his hundred bucks entry fee. In fact some people have done just that.
They literally released an announcement about abandoning QC entirely when they lifted the porn ban. They gave us some mediocre filtering tools and told us to control it ourselves. We only see what we want to see or some such.
I don't use Steam anymore. I hate that I have to launch 7 Days To Die and Assetto Corsa with it, otherwise it would've been uninstalled from my computer months ago.
Fun experiment: If you go to the "Hot and trending" section of the front page, there's a guarantee at least three of the ten games are porn games. Despite people reassuring us that they won't show up on the front page.

It's a problem because it's something I don't necessarily want to see right off the bat. Same way I don't want to see another goddamn battle royale clone, or Hello Neighbour clone, or some other shit. You're not the first person to have this argument with me, and you're not the first person I've told that Steam doesn't have any real filters. I'm not saying remove this shit from the store, but I'd like an option to segregate it out. Like when other websites let you put in tag blacklists, or give you account options to enable warnings and spoiler buttons for NSFW content or to hide it altogether. It's still there, I just have the option of making it invisible. Not with Steam. You can enable Family View in the settings, but that disables violent content, disturbing content, sexual content, and the forum/Steam Workshop browser only for *your* selected library. Not the actual storefront, and certainly not the front page. It'll prevent little Jimmy from accessing your copy of Saints Row The Third and blowing up cowgirl strippers, but won't stop him from getting his hands on Big Tiddy Goth Girl Simulator 2005. It still doesn't stop me from having to see shit like Big Tiddy Goth Girl Simulator 2005 and Greetings Spooky Fellow Next Door Neighbour from showing up when I'm browsing games.
And don't use that "Less moderation means more games" argument. That only applies during the early life of most outlets and platforms. If it's a developed outlet or platform and you remove moderation, you get what Steam is now. A goddamn junkyard. Sure, there's plenty of "choice", but as far as the eye can see it's mostly garbage like what Vinny was playing here. Because what happens is these people know it's an established store with a lot of customers. So they pump out as much as possible for as little effort as possible and count on the large userbase making up for it. Steam sees around two *hundred* games published to it every week thanks to Steam Direct. About a hundred and twenty of those, on average, are asset flips, low effort money grabs, bot-generated games, or any combination of the above. They've even started porting bot-generated Android games to PC and selling them on Steam. Before Steam Direct you had around ninety games published a week, and only about fifty of those would go unnoticed by users reporting them. The asset flips, trading card scams, and early access graveyards all got weeded out either by the approval process or Greenlight. Now there's... Nothing.
+VulpesHilarianus I agree there should be better filter options but as for your other point. Asset flip games already existed on the platform before the revoking of many of the moderation rules. Nobody is really buying the games to begin with and the ability to refund is something everyone has.

For those of you who don't follow horror games, there was this _okay_ mobile game called Granny that got some good coverage on CZcams, and yeah, this guy's games are all the Strange Rope Hero of Granny. All reused assets (some possibly just straight stolen), no semblance of what made Granny fun, and of course, jumping on that Momo/Don't Call This Number At 3 AM Challenge video train like four months after it left the station.

The existence of both the Momo game and the Kick Anime game prove one thing; when something becomes big enough, people will either try to milk it for all its worth (Momo) or take as massive a shit on it as they can (anime). Sometimes both at the same time, just by different factions.

Making games is hard and takes time, especially when you are literally learning how to develop while making it and letting feature creep infect two years worth of your progress. The developer even admits he added too many things he didn't originally plan to and only recently got his development process under something resembling control.
But it definitely has more to it than just killing people at this point. Even if it's using nothing but free Unity Store assets.
YandereDev's rejected competent developers who worked on his game and is a complete ass. It's not just that he is an idiot who lets future creep infect his idea of what his game should be, it's that he spends his time shoving shitty easter eggs into his game and never improving his coding while rejecting any help. He's been like this for a long time, even before the development of Yandere.
