The original animated transformation is a masterpiece. It's so eerie and kind of violent, but so effective. You can feel Ariel's tail being torn and transformed, as she's losing the ability to breathe underwater. It's one of the bravest scenes in Disney history.

Looking back on it, it’s amazing just what they got away with in the Disney Renaissance, not just this scene but in Beauty and the Beast there’s a scene after the Beast fights the wolves where he is bleeding. Granted it is a blink-and-you’ll-miss-it moment but he is bleeding and then there’s Mufasa’s death in The Lion King and even the Hellfire scene in Hunchback of Notre Dame, I think these are scenes that would grant you a PG rating today but back then they were rated G

Honestly, lots of scenes in Disney movies, are violent. For example, the deleted version of Gaston’s death, originally he would be eaten alive by wolfs. And scar was eaten, alive. And in the Beauty in the Beast, the Beast got a bleeding wound from a wolf’s attack, trying to save Berle, and also got stabbed by Gaston, again, bleeding to death. But I can totally agree, the transformations were fantastic! So eerie and violent.

I loved how dramatic and intense her transformation felt in the animations it literally gave me goosebumps. But I also liked how Halles transformation felt kinda eerie, she turns human in this dark cave and is suffocating for air. I almost didn’t think she’d make it because of how deep she was.

All of the transformations in the this movie where shit compared to the original. It's not like they didn't have the technology to do better. They knew the race swap was going to hurt them financially so they chose the cheapest options for magic effects to save money.

Edit: This is thoughts put into words,
Alright, so here's the problem with things after Ariel is changed, cause firstly you forget how deep Ursula's home is.
Sunlight does not penetrate the eternal darkness below 1,000 meters (3,280 feet)
From the 1989 version, Ursula's home is surrounded by what looks like high-temperature hydrothermal vents.
Hydrothermal vents in the deep ocean typically form along the mid-ocean ridges, such as the East Pacific Rise and the Mid-Atlantic Ridge and you start seeing them at 2,000ft below the surface.
Also keep in mind many free style divers, without O2 tanks; will dive up to 400 feet, record holding at 700ft.
Now at 1,000fts, even with O2 tanks and proper training; you started to have trouble breathing.
So if you've read this right, you can start to see the problem with Ariel's change but I'll wrap this up
With Ursula's home being aprox. 2,000ft or lower below the surface, after her change the pressure alone should've killed her.
If not that, the bends would soon after as she was rushed haphazardly to the surface.
And after all that, if we are basing this at the Mid-Atlantic Ridge area , even with Sebastian and Flounder's help she would still have miles, if not days to go before reaching shore.
Then the exhaustion would be another obstacle.
So to be blunt, she would’ve died before seeing Eric at all.

I disagree. Nothing against Halle, but Jodi's transformation felt more... urgent. Intense, creepy, you know? You could see Ariel's tail getting torn apart and while Halle did a good job of pretending to suffocate, it's not very realistic for drowning. When drowning, a human body will flail around intensely doing everything in its power to get to air whether the person drowning likes it or not, it doesn't look like choking. She does swim up fast, but you could tell that Halle wanted to portray the shock of realizing she can't breathe under water anymore. And she does a good job of showing that shock, but the initial reaction itself is not choking, it's "get the hell out of the water." There is no moment of realizing you're drowning. Once you're at the dangerous state of drowning that Ariel was in both, there is zero thinking, none at all, just reaction and reaction alone. Plus, with Sebastian and Flounder immediately rushing to her aid, it added to this feeling of intensity that came

I even felt bad that she almost drowned as well, I even remembered when I was a kid it needs to scare me.

There was something grim yet captivating about Ariel’s physical distress during her transformation in the animated film that the live action remake didn’t quite capture. A close-up or two of Halle expressing pain during the transformation could have enhanced the scene. Given the fact of the current strikes against executives in Hollywood, I definitely feel that the effects department was rushed which resulted in sloppy CGI.

@@JT_Saenz Great point you made but the strikes started way after this movie was finished.
