"The Battle Of Evermore" is the hidden masterpiece on this album. It never gets mentioned as often as some of the more famous songs that surround it but it's a truly amazing, hypnotic and mesmerising piece of music.
Black Dog is hard, gritty, grooving perfection. Rock and Roll is exactly that - it's ramped up Little Richard/Chuck Berry style rock and roll with boogie woogie piano as the cherry on top. Battle of Evermore is an ethereal dream piece in which Jimmy played John Paul Jones' mandolin. Stairway is iconic for so many reasons; the musicality, the repetitious melody which ingrains itself in your head, the pacing as it adds layers and increases tempo and its crescendo of liberation before setting you gently back down to ponder where you've been. It is a timeless masterpiece.
It’s always mind blowing to hear Stairway to Heaven for the first time! It is a masterpiece!🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥
On Stairway Jonesy is using a tenor and soprano recorders to produce what sounds like a flute....the live 1973 MSG version of Stairway is a masterpiece and its the reason why Pagey is my personal favorite and my guitar God
There’s still time to change the road your on!!!!FIRE!🔥🔥
Plant wrote the lyrics for the Battle of Evermore after reading about the Anglo-Scottish wars in the 15th hundreds which he was reading about at the time...also first time and only time they allowed a woman to participate in a LZ album...hope you do part 2 soon because the wait is just too much to take Rory! lol
I would say 'invited', not 'allowed'.
To me personally my favorite album is Houses of the Holy because of Pageys production and layers of guitars are just perfection and it also happens to have my favorite song The Rain Song and a bunch of others that are just brilliant
Yes. By this time they were so confident that they could catch lightening in a bottle that Houses allowed them to really explore in unbridled directions.
@@antarcticorb9197 very true!
Loved this reaction Rory, got me quite emotional seeing your utter enjoyment written all over your face. If you react to STH & BDog again maybe try a live video ( you can always blur out our view of it if that helps get it past copyright) but Battle of Evermore wasn't played live very often (Sandy Denny, the guest vocalist, sadly died and no-one else since has been able to capture that magical duet between RP and her) they tried once or twice in concert with JPJ and sometimes Bonzo trying to accompany RP still as Led Zeppelin, a couple of times as Page&Plant and later RP has sung it a few times in his solo concerts and with Alison Krauss. None compare, sadly, to this incredible studio version imo.
they're Led Zeppelin. What do you expect from the GOATS! Love ya reactions Rory. Keep 'em comin'.
Definitely one of the coolest openings to a song/album
You're correct, Rory. The "Black Dog" riff was written by John Paul Jones.
Has there ever been a more perfect opening side to an album?
You don't really need to answer that.
Pink floyd "wish you were here" comes to mind
@hugo s Not the next one that comes to mind for me, but each to our own.
@@davescurry69 shine on you is such a monolith of an opening that i just had to mention that
@@hoopz5095 Fair enough.
Evermore uses a Mandolin, Stairway is JPJ on the recorder which is a woodwind
PERFECT album side. Maybe the greatest Rock album side ever recorded.
Please react to the live version from MSG 1973. The incredible solo is much longer
You rock Rory! Keep on going! Do as much Zeppelin studio amd live versions as possible!! Welcome to the Zeppelin hole🔥🔥🔥😍
you mentioned jack white and his being influenced by zeppelin. try this on for size: he said once that when he was learning guitar he broke his cassette tape of their 2nd album, because he, over and over again, kept re-winding/replaying the iconic guitar solo from "Whole Lotta Love," with which he was (clearly! understandably!) obsessed. A very cool "rockumentary" you can see/react to is "It Might Get Loud," where Jack White, Jimmy Page, and The Edge hang out and trade guitar licks and wisdom!
Watching u takes me to the first time I heard these tunes. I love guitars but can't play a lick but you can and u seem to make the facial stinkfaces at the same places I have for over 40 years. By far u r my favorite. reactor. You need to react to hey hey what can I say before u get to far down the road from LZIII. It was the b side of Imigrant song but didn't make the album. Its got to be the most classic outtake ever. Give it a listen soon. Another gem that never saw the light of day until the boxsets started coming out is Traveling Riverside Blues it was before LZ II and it is a bluesy treasure. Do them both as a doubleshot and get the remaining early Led out. Been waiting for you to do Battle of Evermore and you didn't dissapoint u reacted like I did the first time all those years ago. I just sat there hearing the lyrics and being swept away by the music and tsken to the valley of the bsttle. Totally blown away as you were. Thanks for these memories
Their best album, in my humble opinion
Great reaction Dude!! This is why you need to listen to every freaking LZ song. They are all amazing and you will never know which is your favorite. Mine is "Achilles Last Stand" from Presence their 7th studio album. Keep going. 😜
And that glorious boogie-woogie piano playing from the Stones' Ian Stewart.
Thanks for reminded me how good this album is!!!! one of the best ever
Rory u are the king of reactions! luv
Awesome reaction to this masterpiece of an album. It's a piece of art to be treasured forever.
You need to see this sing live 73!! It’s FIRE! Too!!🔥🔥🔥
HEY BABY SAID THE WAY you move gonna make you sweat, gonna make you groove..... he never sung it properly after 1972
woohoo! you get to hear Battle of Evermore!!!
HE'S A BAYBEH HE'S A BAYBEH was my introduction to this song at 8 years old 🥰
You know guitars and sound great!! FIRE!!🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥
I think it’s a mellotron in Stairway. It’s a recorder of different instruments, played with a keyboard.
JPJ played recorders in the studio, mellotron in live performances.
Let's go back, fuck it
Best opening to a reaction video.
Yeah, if you want to do stairway by itself, you really should try the live 1973 madison square garden version. Incredible! Way better, longer solo.
That's great, I didn't know you played guitar 😁
If you look at his playlist there is a video of him singing and playing guitar and he sounds great
Hey, nice guitar playing Rory!
You should check out 'Heart' covering 'Stairway to Heaven' in front of LZ , it'll blow you away.
The record company issued a shortened version of Stairway to Heaven as a single in the USA but not in Britain. Maybe they cut out the guitar solo. You have the knack of staying so still sometimes, when listening to the music, that it seems as though the screen has frozen. I like it. I'm not keen on reviewers who flap around too much during the review.
It was never released in a shortened version in the USA because Peter Grant and the band would not allow it..
Nice guitar work. I think this was the album I decided they don't do fillers, every song had to be excellent.
You need to hear Heart's cover of Stairway performed at the Kennedy Center in 2012, honoring Led Zeppelin, with Plant, Page and Jones in attendance and Bonham's son Jason on drums. One of, if not the best cover ever. Link to the full version -

You're a good guitarist, Rory! (This is your name, isn't it?) I love this album.
nice playin
I would like you to react to the great Spanish diva Mónica Naranjo she sings pop, rock, opera , she is a soprano, she still sings and giving concerts, The songs I recommend you are If you leave me now ( en directo) and Pantera en libertad (tour minage), I love your reactions, but you should react to more female singers, I hope you like it, Thank you👍👌👏🏻🇪🇸🎸🔊🎶🎹🎷
I watched you hit your vap and went to put min in my mouth BUT it wasn't in my hand & 1st thing i do is look at you // Yup for a split sec I thought you might of had mine I LAUGHED LOUD! just sharing my laugh I was reading tolkin when this came out / & yes jimmy & JP both played mandolin
