I just love the smile that resides on your face throughout. They aren’t kidding about four sticks, he did use four sticks. They were working on this when Bonzo was having a tough time, and broke down in the Little Richard drumming which became the beginning of “Rock and Roll”.

The next Zeppelin album Houses of the Holy is my personal favorite LZ album because the production of the album and the mixing and layers of guitars that Pagey did on that album is just masterful....The Rain Song, Over the Hills and Far Away, No Quarter, The Ocean etc etc ..
just brilliant but I think Over The Hills and Far Away will blow you away Rory...bro I really look forward to your LZ reactions and iam glad you didn't keep us waiting so long for the reaction to this album...top reaction like always

For Misty Mountain Hop, the title is a nod to Tolkien. Robert wrote the lyrics about a "hippie love-in" in Hyde Park that was broken up by police. Robert would introduce it in concert by saying it was what could happen if caught walking around with rolling papers in your pocket. John Paul Jones plays electric piano on it and according to Jimmy, "We were just playing around and suddenly I came up with the opening part of 'Misty Mountain Hop' and then we were off. Jonesy put the chords in for the chorus and that would shape it up. We used to work pretty fast." Four Sticks (named so because Bonzo played with two sticks in each hand - if you listen closely, you can occasionally hear the sticks click clacking together) was a bitch to record due to the shifting time signatures. In fact, they were so frustrated that, at one point, Bonzo started playing the opening to Little Richard's song "Keep A Knockin'" to clear his head and the others joined in jamming and their song Rock and Roll was born. The song itself sounds a bit manic to me; swirling and crashing and I love it. Going To California is a nice, gentle reprieve after the previous craziness before Levee. Levee is hard as a coffin nail; it beats you into submission and takes no prisoners. Zep were masters of hypnotic, cyclical riffs and rhythms that were never boring; Jimmy knew full well that the repetitiveness would create almost a "ghost backing" meaning that even when they switched up the song and the melody changed, your brain expected it and "heard" it regardless - and therein lies the magic of movement and layers

I've always thought that Brian May Queen's guitarrist, took the idea to always include harmonized guitars from the guitar solo in Misty Mountain Hope. It sounds like Queen guitar solos. I had never heard anything like this before LZIV album came out.

This’s is what we did in the 1970s. We had no internet, no social media, no TV, really. We just hung out, got high and listened to Led Zep, over and over. We had so many good bands! Deep Purple, Jethro Tull, Allman Brothers. On and on.

I love 4 Sticks and I particularly love that mystical change Pagey does on the guitar, btw you should watch the documentary called It Might Get Loud with Jimmy,Jack White and The Edge in a huge room talking music and Pagey showing them the process and how he came out with some of the riffs from LZ songs...you can see Jack White looking at Pagey in awe

Four is great, I always liked three because it's different and they put it together while on the road so it's raw or unpolished.

Awesome authentic reaction!! Like others mentioned House's of the Holy is another gem. No Quarter is my 2nd favorite next to Achilles Last Stand off Presence which will be a while before you get get to it. You still have the masterpiece of Physical Graffiti first.😁

I believe you're thinking of White Summer/Black Mountain Side. They'd sometimes performed them together during an acoustic set, and they are together as one track on the compilation album, Coda. Enjoyed this review, thanks.

Bobby N. correct as usual. The Page/Plant live versions in the mid/late 1990's were pretty well done, with the late, great Michael Lee on drums.

Next LZ album that is a must do for you, after every album they would put out seemed like they possibly couldnt get any better, then they put out what many hardcore Zed Heads consider LZ best album "Presents", it's completely different from their norm and all members are masters of their instruments as you will hear throughout the songs, this album will not disappoint! Look foward to see your reaction

"IV" has the dubious honor of having what is maybe my "least favorite" Zep tune on it. Yes, like naming your "least favorite" gold bar, and still better than 90%of current music, but "Four Sticks" always stuck in my craw a bit. I think it's Robert's sort of scratchy-ish voice, keening higher-pitched than usual, which puts me off a little. Usually I'm "YEAH!" with Zep, but this is more "meh..." I know, scandalous, but the other songs are all gems, the album itself a treasure chest. Your reaction, like they and it, rocked!

The original is by Memphis Minnie & Kansas Joe McCoy & was released in 1929 ; it was written about the 1927 Mississippi floods.

Zeppelin were massive Howlin' Wolf fans and that repetitive riff groove that the Zep did on several songs owes a great deal to The Wolf who used that to great effect himself.
