  • Today I am showing you how I wash my down jacket and dry it without a tumble dryer. Washing a down jacket can be intimidating at first, they cost so much and you don't want to do anything to jeopardise their quality. Make sure to follow the care instructions on your jacket as I have done for mine.

    Just the thing I was looking for! I just bought a really nice down jacket which got filthy when I wore it. Scared of ruining, it I did some reading on how to clean down jackets on the internet. So glad I came across this video. It summarizes all the information out there nicely. Thank you!

    Thanks very much, Anita. I just bought a used down coat that smells a bit smoky. I want to hand wash it, so your video was just the thing I was looking for. You are a very good teacher. Cheers from Ohio in the USA.

    do you ever just give it a good wipe on the outside or interior when it's too soon to give it a wash? How n what detergent ( use the same recommended for down ?) thx

    • @AfricanHiker
      @AfricanHiker  Před 2 lety +3

      I've never done that, but you can spot clean it. If I were to I would just wipe with a warm damp cloth (water only). I wouldn't want to leave a detergent residue on the jacket.

    Would this also work with a larger thicker down jacket? I have a white one that unfortunately tends to get dirty easily at the bottom:/

    • @AfricanHiker
      @AfricanHiker  Před rokem +2

      It should work for a thicker jacket as well. Perhaps you can try spot washing the areas that get dirty, no need to wash the whole thing if it is just the bottom. Use a towel with water & down detergent and gently rub down those areas. then thoroughly rinse the bottom of the jacket.

      @@AfricanHiker yes your lucky with the weather but can get to dry at times but you are used to the climate, here in Wales the U.K we have some very hot weather for a short period of time and them the damp raining weather hits and then the snow in the winter months but its great to go for a long hike in the mountains and not to far from me there is the Brecon Beacons if you have heard of them, also we get people come from all over the world to live here but I don't understand why as its a damp old country haha. Anyways take care my friend 😉

    I washed a Save the Duck jacket by hand and hung to dry after taking out all the water I could. Now my jacket has water marks. Is it bc I hung instead id laying flat?

    • @AfricanHiker
      @AfricanHiker  Před rokem +1

      I am not sure what could have caused that, I dont think it was the hanging. Perhaps it is from the minerals in your water?

    • @JamieR
      @JamieR Před 7 měsíci

      It's recommended to lay it flat and not hang. Because it adds weight and can deform the jacket, as well as the down will clumb more together then as well. Even if you shake it out. Laying it flat, shaking every 1-2 hour is what I've gathered seem to be the best option. Can also use a low heat hair dryer if all else fails, but at a reasonable distance. If it's windy that's probably the best option, or in a warm bathroom which is more controlled.

    • @AfricanHiker
      @AfricanHiker  Před 2 lety +1

      Yes u can put in the washing machine on the lower spin settings - same as wool /delicates then tumble dry with tennis balls and or wool balls

    soaking the feathers is wrong you want to fast was the outside layer not to impact d feathers

    • @AfricanHiker
      @AfricanHiker  Před rokem +1

      Its interesting to hear how other people do things. Personally how I've washed it in the video is how I've always washed it over many years now and my jacket is fine. Ofc this is YT so always do your own research and check with the manufacturer of your jacket.
      It is correct that down feathers do not like to be wet. And it is better not to wash the jacket to often but to spot clean/ wipe down the outside. However at times it does need to be submerged in water and given a proper wash, I use mine for hiking so eventually it starts smelling worn n smoky.

      I am in the same problem. I put my Uniqlo 170$ in the washer machine and now it’s air drying but it is super flat I’m scared I ruined it :( I’m going to try to “fluff it” once is all dry

    • @bethmoore-love4223
      @bethmoore-love4223 Před rokem

      @@macalayseca, if you just let it air dry without shaking it and working out the feather clumps, it won't loft up and keep you warm. Doesn't mean it's ruined! Geese also get wet without destroying their feathers. Maybe just take it to a laundromat and tumble dry it on low or no heat with tennis balls or clean sneakers. )))Do NOT dry on high heat!((( Or wet it again and tumble it in a cool dryer with tennis balls. (you have beat it up a bit and shake it while it's drying (like the tennis balls do in the dryer)

    • @bethmoore-love4223
      @bethmoore-love4223 Před rokem

      Reece, I bet it isn't ruined, don't write it off yet. It really needs to be gently beaten and shook out hard A LOT while it's drying.
