  • Hey guys!
After much interest on my Instagram account I've decided to show you exactly how I wash my feather down jacket without ruining it! You will need a dryer for this technique, however I'm sure you could do this without a dryer but be prepared for a loooooong drying process.
Please note that I am NOT a feather down jacket washing professional. Follow this tutorial at your own risk! If you are not comfortable in washing your own jacket please seek a professional to help you.
    Enjoy! . .

Thank you for the idea of what soap to use and the 3 tennis balls. My Washing machine and Dryer is LG. I make it 2 rinse, and 2 spin at 400 rpm at 20 degrees Celsius. Drying 2x at High at 29 minutes. Looks brand new again.

Thanks so much for this video! I just wanted to mention something for those watching cos I was panicking when after drying it for a little while the feathers were still clumped together. The dryer DOES do most of the work as explained in the video. I had left mine in there for about 2 hours and it came out nice and puffy 😍

Very nice and pleasant video. I still don't get what the Tennis balls are really doing if you have to do so much by hands and it seems a lot of work too. I just read another one involving ping pong balls I wonder what's the difference? Thanks for putting this here.

    • @TheHoudaman

a year late but the tennis balls basically hit the clumps to help dislodge the feathers from eachother as they dry, same thing as doing it by hand, ping pong balls are the same concept but they seem too light to work imo, i used a hard spikey plastic ball

So what happens if you already washed the down vest using regular Tide detergent pods the watched your video? It was clumpy when I removed it so I let it hang dry then put it in the dryer with racquet balls on the delicate setting 3 or 4 times. It came out all fluffy but is there going to be an issue with mold or bird flu or something since I used regular detergent?
Also I went to watch your Instagram posts but it looks like you changed the account name from the one you give here ….what happened?

You're jacket should be fine but you may have damaged the feathers inside with the detergent you used because they may have been stripped of certain porteins etc, its kind of like if you washed your hair with very harsh soap. But this is probably still fine because most of the warmthIin down jackets comes from the air pockets created etc

You can do it without a dryer but it will take a really long time to dry. Once it’s completely dry you should be able to give it a gentle shake or use your hands to separate the clumps. They won’t separate if they’re still wet! 🌻

taking it out of the washing machine could have been done more gently.
