Good insights into the metaverse. It reminds me of Second Life (SL). I used that early on, just a little bit, for remote meetings. It was not really something that useful. Zoom and MS Teams is more than fine for that purpose, with no extra hardware required. One of the things Meta touts is augmented reality. That can be useful for industrial companies but is not something a consumer would need. The spending by tech companies that rely in advertising, on everything, is just out of control. They have more employees than the companies that were involved in aerospace and defense. Believe me, their actual products are much simpler. I come from the A&D world.

Miis have been around far longer than 10 years. While the "Mii-Verse" as a term may have launched with the Wii U 10 years ago, Miis were a thing as far back as the original Wii in 2006. Meanwhile, the Wii used hardware very similar to what the Gamecube used in 2001, save for the full DVD drive and the motion controls. The Wii had the Mii program for creating Miis and also launched with Wii sports, a motion game that used the Miis directly. More nintendo licensed games would soon come out for the Wii that used the Miis as the playable protagonists over time, first adhering largely to the sports and "fitness" genres of gameplay and branching out over time.
Also, I too would agree that the Miis are better than the Facebook characters, but because the Mii characters look noticeably better if you pay attention to details. The Miis at least had decent lighting on their bodies and a shiny sheen applied to them to prevent them from falling into the uncanny valley. Mii body parts weren't painted with a bright, flat fullbright color, as they appear to have color gradients and basic lighting, which breaks up the color and makes them easy on the eyes. Meanwhile, that facebook character in the GIF had completely constant "full-bright" lighting with completely flat and bright colors and no sheen of any kind. It hurts your eyes to look at the Facebook character. It's almost as if the Miis were designed by artists who knew how to design something that's appealing to look at, expressive, versatile, and simple to render even on old hardware, whereas the Facebook characters were designed by people whose job it is to maintain an aging social media site.

@@ILubBLOfficial I work in IT, so my experience does not apply to all forms of labor without compulsory need for physical attendance. Both remote work and office work have their validity, but it depends on the situation. Remote work is best suitable for concentration-intensive and heavily self-managed work. You are in silence and if you have a question, you call (or write) a colleague via mostly Teams. It works decently well if it is an integrated solution.
Office work is preferred if you need a lot of communication, e.g. at the beginning of a project or to demonstrate something that works bad in an online conference. It also has an immense social component; yes, colleagues are not by default your friends, but they are still humans and actually having some sort of social attendance related to your work benefits your mental health (unless anxieties are at play).
The metaverse idea of attending a virtual office pretty much combines most of the worst of both realms: Social isolation and strain on your eyes from home office, physical obligation and distraction from attendance. Who seriously wants this?

VR dev here! I work in academia, so I really hate metaverse because its made it really difficult to have VR in a lab environment. However, id like to provide some context to the issues you bring up, since some of these are def metaverse being silly as hell, but some are actually - believe it or not - just kind of VR best practices.
    - First: VR has to render the scene stereoscopically. This means it renders the same scene twice from different perspectives (once to the left eye and once to the right eye) to get a realistic illusion of depth (you could render once then copy one eye to the other, but its not as believable and can be nauseating). Vr also must track a lot of positional data. This means VR apps need to be super optimized, so they can only handle graphics about as good as a mobile phone. Now, metaverse is ugly ugly and they worked very poorly within those constraints, but its super misleading and... really completely unapplicable to compare VR capabilities to something like ffxii (good taste though) or graphics in AAA games. Miiverse is a great example though, as those models were built to communicate character and expression without HD graphics. VR chat would also be a good example, or even vtubers! because you can see what people have done with 10k polygon limitations in VR :) (seriously, imagine if your polygon limit was the equivalent of a kratos nipple)
    - Dynamic shadows are extremely expensive to process as well, and from the perspective of someone in VR, you rarely rarely look down at your legs or notice not having shadows. When I introduce someone to VR, not having legs is often one of the first observations, but its... never reallly brought up again! Also: legs can actually be nauseating if theyre in app, because - like you mentioned - tracking can rarely work well for legs. Not just technologically, but practically! Different heights can mean sensors within the HMD- which have become more commonplace- cant really see the feet of taller people. If the legs are out of sync with your actual feet, it can cause simulation sickness (essentially reverse motion sickness). Also- you guessed it, cutting out an ultimately unnecessary part of the model saves on our 'budget' for graphics. Basically, no legs is standard in VR, even preferrable, but it looks weirder when youre watching footage and not in VR. Granted, this really only works for solo vr games - in multiplayer its just as weird.
    - quest pro virtual office is a total fucking meme to vr devs. Its absolutely ridiculous. No one wants to wear a headset that long, hands down, theyre way too uncomfortable and heavy. One thing my team always asks before taking on a project is: does this need to be VR? And in this case: hell no!
(Edited bc my - marks made it strikethrough lol)

As someone who studies and works in the field of VR/AR and such, I meet really often people who wanted to include these technologies just for the sake of it. I can imagine that someone with a lot of money had the idea "hey it would be cool to make a mii verse for meetings BUT in VR". While I want to believe that they did market research I get the feeling that just the social aspect of being there as a VR avatar is the only thing that really differentiates this from Zoom/Teams. I mean compare the user journey:
      Zoom:
Put on headset, turn on cam (if not automatically) and start zoom/teams, enter meeting ID or similar data, go
      Metaverse:
turn on vr headset (check for battery/put in loading cable), put it on, Connect to metaverse, find room/follow invite, try not to get motion sick, go.
That was just seen in the context of meetings. Of course you can do other stuff which will be really average I guess, but at this point, it conveys the feeling to be the son of Zoom and VR chat. And even VR chat has legs though.

Like, CZcams is for videos, Reddit is the Internet divided into small parts by different topics, Twitter is a place where companies announce news and people argue, games are supposed to be played, and so on.

    • @wamingo

I agree it's not clearly defined, but many people prefer their virtual lives to their real lives.
Games too, like any entertainment, is an escape.
But I think this characterization is incorrect anyway. FB has showed a bunch of scifi-futurism which can just be ignored..
FB's metaverse actually looks more like it wants to be a platform for making games and experiences. A Roblox competitor of sorts.
And in the long run I think it'll also become an app store - which could be key. It'll act as the goto meeting place where you discover new products and launch your experiences, especially with friends. FB will bribe some game devs and other artists to launch their stuff there. Now it's competing with Apple's App store, Steam and maybe even Netflix and Spotify. Add in legacy FB integration and you got a serious package.
And forget the notion that it'll be a VR only thing. It'll run on your phone, pc, everywhere. No mass adoption without platform agnosticism. The real money is in the metaverse, not hardware.
Anyway, maybe the skeptics will be right.. But I've rarely seen so many people use so little imagination while criticising only what they see.

Two points. One is that you can be in the Metaverse sitting down or in a wheelchair, which further can make it harder to track legs. Avatars need to walk, run, move sideways, torso twist, bend, kneel, lie down and so on. It costs rendering and tracking power, and the poor Meta Metaverse needs all the rendering it can get.
Secondly, as was alluded to, the Metaverse thingy was clearly hoped to be a way for Meta to get onto the "next big thing", like PCs in the 1980s or smartphones in the 2000s. It had hoped that thing would be virtual reality and was planning on us all being on cheap Meta headsets, which would be breaking your privacy and soaking up as many fees from developers and users as hard as it can. There is definitely a future in VR, just not in the one Meta wants at the moment.

@@the_derpler VR is disorientating in itself. It's a paradox for the brain, where your eyes are seeing movement, but not your ears or other senses. That's just practice. There's also a bunch of small tricks you can do to mitigate effects, like adding a fan in front of you, or amplifying your arms movement when you walk, or bob your head slightly. Not adding legs for that is not an excuse, since many games already found lot of workaround about that very topic.
Also, how many times do you actually watch your own legs while you're moving, anyway?

nah, that's an insult to 90's games. Even 3D games of that era had lighting effects and often even shadows. Doom had a rudimentary but rather rad and artistic lighting system, and Quake even had static map shadows that were raytraced at the time of the map's compilation, with that lighting data stored and then loaded and slapped onto the map's textures when ran in-game. Both Doom and Quake creatures even had depth and shadows they cast on themselves so that they looked more real. The graphics were less advanced back then, sure, but the artists used what they had access to to at least create things that were appealing to look at, meanwhile the metaverse looks like it has some competence in the technology, but no art direction for what characters or people are supposed to look like because everything is just too flat.
