- NARROW ESCAPE - our narrowboat life adventure. In this episode, we set off from our spot on the Leeds and Liverpool Canal at Red Rock near Wigan and head towards Adlington. It's a beautiful stretch of canal and some friends of ours Terry, Matt and Peggy the dog are moored here so we're hoping to bump into them.

Adlington north of the aqueduct over the River Douglas is in Lancashire however you measure it. However, Wigan and Leigh and everything north of the Mersey is still in Real Lancashire.
Our heating broke after four days and had to wait three fir another repair just in time gor the minus five all good now thanks i bet you both still shattered so keep warm n well n rest up from us the oldies 👍👍🌟🌟

I grew up near Parbold/Appley Bridge stretch of the L&L canal and I've never seen so much green algae and pennywort. I live in the US now and have not made it home since before CV (Certificate Of Vaccination ID). I've walked many of these stretches shown on this and played Haigh Hall GC where you started. Nice video, nice to see the old canal and countryside around it.
On that day in time it was a real challenge Phil. Glad we could bring back some memories. On a nice day I bet that stretch is lovely to walk and take in the scenery! We must go back at some point.
Really enjoyed the video. So sad to see some boats in a very bad state. Have a great weekend. Looking forward to the next episode.

Hi guys, that's an extortionate price for red diesel, it's only 1.45 at sainsburys near me, nice quiet journey apart from the weed😂😂
If I read the price correctly (and if I didn’t then they at least need to improve their signage) then totally!! Like someone said you could fill containers up at the supermarket and sell it to boaters at a profit 😱😆
It was good to have a more gentle cruise after the hustle and hassle of Wigan!!

There was a distinct difference in new, shiny boats and somewhat semi derelict boats along this stretch.
You did well navigating through the weed islands and a good decision on mooring up rather than tackle the flight of locks.

Yeah, the contrast in boats was quite stark on this stretch but a lovely setting and it was a treat to very briefly catch up with Terry, Matt & Peggy the dog.
With Sue’s help the locks will be a breeze and crucially, much safer, and at least this way I won’t be in trouble for doing them on my own!!

Elliot and Sue, I wonder if anyone could fabricate a hardened and tempered steel prop with a sharp cutting edge on the leading aspect of the prop. Hmmm, cut right through that pennywort however it is spelled.
It’s a good point actually although I wouldn’t like to run over a cormorant or too many fish/eels with one of those bad boys..!
I think part of the problem is the water pressure. You see the weed from the side of the boat get sucked under at a 90 degree angle. It’s not just the stuff you hit head on.
Same at the back on tickover, the weed gets sucked under from behind…
Problem is if you drive through it with lots of power it just accelerates the process of fouling the prop. It’s a real pain.
The answer is to not have it in the canal but it’s an invasive weed and grows so quickly and densely it’s a real problem to shift.

Watching this vlog now on tv. I heard you say that Sue’s has had concussion most of the summer due to her 3 falls. I saw them. Has she been checked out at hospital? I’m very concerned.

She has indeed. She’s had a full MOT and CT scan (she didn’t like that bit at all but she knew it needed to be done!).
Thankfully she’s passed all the tests and the dizziness, imbalance etc just needed to work it’s way out of the system. It’s now been replaced with an ear infection that refuses to clear up properly but that’s another story!!

Oh that’s good. Re ear problems I now have a problem with my ears too as a result of Covid 7 weeks ago. Antibiotics have not worked and my GP has now prescribed nasal and ear steroids. If Sue hasn’t seen a doctor yet, maybe that might help? X
@JL1308 She’s on her 6th doctors appointment for it now. Had anti biotics and a raft of nasal and ear sprays so she’s now been referred to ENT hospital for a specialist.
Ticking off the days until the appointment.
Interesting you mentioned covid in the mix…she had that a little while ago. Hhmmmmm.
Covid has a lot to answer for, believe me! I had a really bad time with it and, although Negative now, I’m still suffering with a number of post-Covid symptoms. The ear problems are just one of a number. My Eustachian tubes are affected and this has caused problems with my eardrums. My sinuses are in a real mess.
The other thing to consider is possible vertigo; eg getting out of bed, sitting up and feeling dizzy, or making sudden turning movements that cause dizziness. That can sometimes be a cause of the perimenopause or menopause. It can also be helpful to get a full range of blood tests done including oestrogen, testosterone, SHBG and FAI, thyroid and Follates. Us women can be low in things without even knowing.
I don’t want to seem prying and I don’t want you or Sue to explain her medical information on here in public; but having been through a few things myself, sometimes it can be helpful to pass on some things that might be worth considering, even if they turn out not to be the case. I do hope Sue gets some answers and relevant treatment soon.

This canal needs masses of work and money spent to restore it to its former glory like when it first opened.
Unless this canal gets fixed then your kind time and efforts in filming and travels along it only reinforces my opinion never to travel on it.
Which is of course a disappointment.

Hi David - good to hear from you. It’s a big topic really and a real source of angst for everyone. There is a strong argument to say if the money won’t spread around across the whole network then the CRT might focus it in certain areas, or specifically avoid spending on others. Is the L&L a basket case? Can’t be sure but it’s doubtless a head ache to them.
