I reckon all you need to do to make the CZcams views explode is to unblock a few drains or bywashes along your way. That content is crazy popular! Seriously though, you do lovely vlogs and I enjoy them a great deal. Your vlogs inspired us to stop at Reedley Marina for my daughter's 18th birthday during our canal holiday on the Leeds & Liverpool last summer. The restaurant there is lovely. Reversing a 62ft hire boat into the narrow jetty (off in the corner), without hitting anyone or messing it up in front of the liveaboards is one of my proudest achievements!

I am surprised at the number of subscribers because your content is really and grown up. I say grown up because there are a few narrow boat vlogs that are silly, pointless, and mostly showing themselves rather than what they are passing on the canal. I really enjoy your vlogs. We have debated whether we need to change the format of the vlogs but always come back to staying real to ourselves. Our vlogs are what happens on a day cruising with us and we don’t want to change that.

I've some serious hard drive space to fill..

Your time and efforts to produce your vlogs is massive it is giant to all narrow boat vlogers and we all the viewers appreciate all you all do.
Blending historical places with cruises is difficult to put together and like you say separate them.
Alan has tried what you propose and I think he's amalgamated both his together with one week a cruise next week a place tour.

We think we know who you mean and we did see his vlog pulling the two together.
Our off towpath stuff will be quite different to his though - effectively Sue and I being us but not in a canal setting so we think it could work in one place but we don’t want to annoy NE watchers with things they don’t want to see nor do the same to ETUK watchers who aren’t interested in our waterway based life, so, two channels it is. We really hope it works. Time will tell but we aren’t going to give it another two years before taking stock again!!!

This is totally positive feedback, but when you side scroll or move side to side with your current camera it jitters. It makes my brain hurt and makes the vids look 1990. Just 1 little thing that could be updated. I will give thumbs up from now on! Hope you guys keep the channel. I personally love the technical boat updates. here in the US, youtube allows a viewer to skip the advertising with a $13 a month "premium" option. does youtube put the proceeds from "premium" into the pot and share it with creators? (silly question, huh?)
Hey / not a silly question in the slightest, quite the opposite!!
As we understand it when someone with YT Premium watches a video YT share a % of the premium amount with the creators the person watches in ‘compensation’ for the fact no adverts are being played and no advert revenue generated.
It must be in line though with what the advert revenue would pay out if someone wasn’t ‘premium’.

I'm really looking forward to your new channel! I've watched a lot of Narrowboat channels in the last couple of years and I've noticed that some really grow fast and others stagnate. Its all personal preference but I've thought about those channels that I look forward to and those I've Unsubscribed to because they aren't my cup of tea. Some things that I don't like: JUST cruising, obnoxious music (subjective I know), vlogs filmed months in the past (i.e,,its winter but they are wearing shorts!), presenters stilted on-camera (not everyone is comfortable on camera, I know I wouldn't be). What I like: variety other than cruising (exploring, nature shots of flora and fauna, cooking, crafting, social events, diy), clever camera/editing, humor, You guys have really good "on-camera" charisma (I smile every time you say "my angel") so you have a great start!

I watch a lot of youtubers and have yet to put my finger on why some seem to grow very fast and other not as much. I've noticed that the attention span of the demographic is everything. Younger channels move along at a faster pace (and require more editing) and tuned I think to the audience. The narrowboat is indeed a slower paced niche. Which for me is great. But I think the forthright discussion of what it takes is necessary and important for you to grow. I look forward to checking out your new channel, just sub'd. cheers!
That is very, very interesting!!! And very timely.
We watched a few vloggers very recently to see what others were doing (beyond some of our favourites we don’t scour YT) and the style gave us mild epilepsy!!! Tiny, short clips banged in, one after the other to the point where we struggled to relax and enjoy the journey. The views were massive though.
We debated it afterwards and agree that if that is what is required to ‘hit the numbers’ we’d rather just not bother and leave them to it.
A young family member the other day was watching some Tik Tok stuff and the garbage was being delivered at a pace that would give you some sort of medical condition. Attention span and retention…practically zero.
We really do want the channels to be successful but…

You’re right about the burn out point. The time that goes into Explore the UK will need to come from somewhere but then we’ve probably been doing ‘too much’ on NE. We considered sponsorship but it’s not really “us”…we don’t script anything and the videos have always just been ‘us being us’.
Interesting thoughts on the last few points - definitely something we are going to think about and in fact we might put a short ‘coming up in the next video’ montage on the end of the next one to go out and see how that works?

I was thinking hard on what options you have. I have seen it work on TV other channels many times. Do fundraiser for Josh three days of the year to get help fixing up Josh to keep him afloat. I think you would find a community that steps up to help because I would also pitch in. Saying what needs to be done and it's a lot of work and money. Don't let pride get in the way. Seriously seem it work

If I may suggest something, make a playlist of all your videos in order so that people just discovering you can go back and watch everything from the beginning without having to click on each individual video. And if someone decided to binge-watch *everything,* say on an old laptop in another room for instance, then all the adverts could play through without being skipped and you could possibly gain a few more pennies in revenue. I know that if my wife watches something in on her laptop in the living room while I am watching it on my desktop computer in my office, it counts as two different views to the algorithms. Each device on a home wifi or LAN system has its own IP address. The algorithm counts IP addresses, not locations. --Dan
Hi Dan - that’s very kind of you to suggest but they should all be under a Playlist called ‘The Big Adventure’ already and each and every End Screen should promote the playlist in the left hand bottom corner. Does it not do that in your screen?

Good evening fellow Josh owners, only 96 in a year? you're slipping ! lol. I'm not sure whether I mentioned this before, I am a pro filmmaker and editor, so if the edits are more than you can handle, lets chat. I have a 180TB NAS I can give you direct access to on a web based file browser with all the same functionality as windows explorer. Anyway, I'm a relative newcomer to your channel, it is certainly one of the very best canal life ones. I am also currently installing a complete new computer controlled electrical and boat management and control system on my Josh, so if that is of interest to you as content for either or both channels, again, lets chat. In true ‘Narrow Escape just turn the camera on and film’ we hadn’t even debated what we were going to say beyond the wider message we wanted to deliver so it just sort of came out.
We think the wider audience thing is a good idea and we don’t want to alienate the canal one we have. For some watching NE us walking around a non-waterways related thing might be of no interest, for others it could be of as much interest as a canal video. Our conclusion was to try and keep the canal videos ‘tight’ on the narrowboat channel and put everything else on the new one.
Those people that have an interest in us as people, and what we get up to will watch both. Those that have more specific interests will watch one or the other.
We might, MIGHT, put shorter videos on both I.e still show a off towpath video on NE but it would be a much shorter version…depends on the editing requirements!!
Anyway, we’re looking forward to bringing some new content out and seeing what happens!

I do enjoy most of your vlogs but find you maybe spending too much "on camera" time and less on the scenery that most viewers might expect. I don't have an issue with your comments and overview, but you could do this by narrative only and show some of the wonderful UK scenery. I've only had 40 years in TV production and programming so maybe know nuffin. Good luck!!
As much as I enjoy seeing you both I agree with the above comment. You should show more of your surroundings and just do a voice over.

Thanks for the feedback. That’s an interesting one as we always thought we didn’t spend all that much time ourselves on camera. Will go back and watch a few recent videos over again and have a look.

Your lates "IMPORTANT NEWS CANNEL UPDATE" was all done with you on camera..................which I must admit stopped me watching. Narration with camera shooting pics of your walk would have been better!!!
@tasfood9872 I do understand the point BUT this video wasn’t a walk…it was an update with an important message and if we are asking people to do stuff I’d rather look them in the eye and do it, not show them pretty pictures of the canal. This was a message we could have delivered in the supermarket car park for instance, or at a bus stop.
If (if) we are spending too much time on camera in a normal cruising video then that is worth looking at and considering., which is what I will be looking at later when reviewing recent videos because I didnt think we were but then when you’re in the editing it’s sometimes good to just zoom out and take a look at the wider piece 👍
Sadly this isn’t down to what you have done or are doing, the changes CZcams made means that lots of channels do not get pushed to people who watch similar stuff if they have watch history etc turned off. Wish you all the best in the future.
Well, in many respects we suppose that’s good to hear but equally quite frustrating.
We stand by our content though so we’ll keep on smiling and producing stuff we can say we are proud of and see what happens 👍
