    I hope I explained this PO300 trouble well enough for everyone. Bottom
    line my experience with code, seems to always be a broken/bad
    connection, bad sensors. ------Here is an Example and this one is a bit
    easier to figure out... .....(PO300 AND SAY A....PO304, tells you where
    to look) Cyl #4.

      Nathan Rohrbough now mine also threw a P0305 code so I know to look at cylinder 5. About 2 months ago I had changed all spark plugs and coil packs and the car ran great (check engine light never went off though). Now just recently the car started running pretty bad and idling hard and the check engine light started flashing (and that’s when I got a P0300 and P0305).

    The biggest cause of a P0300 is the battery. Every inspection should start with testing the battery, then go from there. To set a P0300 code it has to be something the computer directly controls, like the coils and injectors. It will not set a P0300 from carbon build up, sludge, worn or bent valves, worn rings or a hole in your piston.

    I believe on the fuel pump there is a check valve . When you put your pressure gauge on to test , it should hold pressure after the key is off for a certain time period . If it drops too quickly , the check valve is bad . On a volume test , if your pressure gauge has a dump valve , with the car running , I believe about 16 ounces should come out in 30 seconds . That is a ballpark number . A clogged fuel filter or bad pump may slow it down .

    I'm saying if you have a real loose timing chain or loose belt...it only takes 0.5 degrees for the cam and crank to detect a difference between the two of them. They may spin at the same timing marks, but the slack will noted in the sensors if slack or a different point of reference is seen in the cam and crank sensors. Even if one sensor starts to fail...it see's this as one of the two (crank or cam) are not in time, or thinks there not spinning the same time....then gives a code. In a nut shell.

    I'm in the P0300 boat too.
    My wife drives a 2016 Nissan Rogue. It has very few miles on it - 4,400. All the sudden she took it out the other day and she said it was shaking. When I took it for a ride it was misfiring badly and I got codes P0301 P0300 P0219a.
    Since the P0301 is cylinder 1 misfire I first swapped the coils of 1 & 2 cylinders. Same P0301 and bad misfire. Then I swapped 1 & 2 plugs and the misfire code went to cylinder 2. Thought I solved it with a plug replacement but day later got rough idle and check engine light again but now P0303 P0300. So, I change all the plugs. Still rough idle and check engine light with P0300 code.
    Looking closer at the removed plugs they showed some carbon and fuel progressed up the threads - this was on all cylinders.
    Messing with my code scanner I found a monitoring function that shows how many detected misfires in each cylinder. Letting the car idle cylinders 1 & 2 show zero but cylinders 3 & 4 have progressively growing number of misfires. Just to do something I swapped the 1 & 3 coils and the 2 & 4 coils but no change.
    The car is running much better than when it had the first problem but still rough at idle and misfires sometimes at low loads. Seems better under load.
    Any suggestions on what to try next welcome.
    Thanks - Mike

    if not the gas filter , obviously after having eliminating the other causes , such as Compression

    checking other sensors as well ... right ?!

AFR"s went about 13.2:1 after running the engine up to about 4k rpms its still in break in period. Turned into my place of work go to park and it just shuts off. Tried to start it and you get a bad hard start. Engine wont idle without a little throttle. Mind you its a static idle engine no iac as its a built engine. 90mm tb, 272 cams, 13:1 compression. Engine ran about 100 miles with no issue. Change the plugs and like 30 seconds after a 4k rpm pull develops a misfire and well rest is history. When i did the TSing i had .038 spark plug gaps when spec is .032 they were iridium plugs which is why i didnt gap them lol. Up to that point engine was not having an issue running. Problem developed on the last 30 seconds of the drive to work lol. Thinking its cheaper oem style plug wires and spark plug gaps too wide for a high compression engine. So bought some msd wires and gappable plugs so set them at .032 gap. Sorry for the wall of text lol.

    The way you explained it was perfect. I've been dealing with a few weird issues in my 6mt 2003 350z. Once in a while i'll see a P0300 code stored but I would just clear it and it won't return for a few weeks, then back again. The moment you mentioned that the P0300 is misleading and is actually getting triggered by camshaft and crankshaft sensor values, it all made sense. My car is notorious for chewing through cam sensors and that one statement you made verified it in an instant. My other symptoms were slightly rough idle, and after a cold start with a minute or so warming up from a stop to crawling and driving if I hold the clutch a little too long at the bite point its starts jerking till it catches gear and gains speed. Never have this issue when fully warmed up driving throughout the day. Cam sensors work with oil, so temps matter which further proves my point that the culprit is cam sensors since the oil is cold and electrical signals are weaker, thus my jerking. Thanks a lot for giving info that would've taken me longer to find on the internet!

    Most of the steps you did were not related to a PO300. If it was a plug ,coil, wire, or compression you would have a fault for the number cylinder ie PO 302 etc. You need to look for something common to all cylinders. Also most of the time the PO300 code the engine runs fine sometimes. If you had a bad fuel pump and or fuel filter it wouldn’t run good period. So what’s left? Cam position sensor and crankshaft position sensor effect all cylinders.

    • @FixingWithPassion
      @FixingWithPassion  Pƙed 4 lety +3

      True, but if there is a issue with s plug, wire, or compression its good to resolve that first. If there is actually a miss, bad coil, low compression its not going to help anything. Should have checked for spark right at the plug by pulling the plug and hooking it up to the plug wire and sitting the plug on a grounded location. The plug wires might have had spark, but that doesn't mean the plugs do. I have seen that problem many times especially with Champion plugs like you have in that engine.

      The thing about the solenoid shorting out to the block was that it melted the crankshaft position sensor in the block ,which was next to the starter, so I thought it was the sensor causing my problem. A year earlier the starter had been under water but rain and big puddles must get into starter and solenoid here and there , luckily I figured it out without throwing to many -arts at it.

    Finally someone that actually explains things and the right way.! Thank you! Hey so I have a 1998 Chevy astro van that runs bad. There's a electrical ticking when it misfires. Driving down the road it runs perfect but then randomly misfires and then doesn't at all. I figured it was a bad spark plug wire since every time it m isfires so I started it and pulled one by one spark plugs and made no difference at all the tick was still there. Do you think or can a fuel injector make that noise if it's going bad ? Problem seems to be getting worse as well now and I have very bad fuel economy now please he BCK to me Thank you:)

      TVWXMAN32 yes has been on for years I just got this from my wife's father. Was 7 different codes and I cleared them started running perfect then once gets hot does everything I explained now will do it at cold start the two codes the ecm is saying for the last 3 days is po300 and p0304 witch obviously theres something going on with 4th piston chamber. No compression check cause I no th block is fine do to it running perfect on and off. ......long block 4.3 litter v6 vortec intake. But ya everytime it starts to misfire...witch is at ...always stop signs and starting out all of a sudden it stops that little tick noise then runs like its normal self then like a switch stops running good loose hores power and the whole thing shakes them again is fine. It's obviously what is making the ticking noise but I can't figure it out . So I guess fuel injector on 4 but not sure. Basically before I get into this I live in this van for the next 3 months so hard to work on. Is it a known thing that fuel injectors make that tick tick noise louder if they at bad ? Or do you think I have something else. ?

    • @FixingWithPassion
      @FixingWithPassion  Pƙed 7 lety +1

      Ticking lifters are not a bad thing just annoying to here. Probably no whats causing the miss fire. I start looking at the fuel pressure first. See if it looses any fuel pressure when you shut it off. My neon gave me a po300 and found out it was a loss of fuel pressure.

    My Mazda Protege 2001, great car, began stalling at idle with warm engine, light finally came on, mechanic got code PO300. Original plugs and wires replaced and showed normal wear. At the next driving, car started great, but there was a huge smell of gas in the garage. Then car stalled (at running temperature) and died at low speed, would then crank but not start. Towed to garage. Since it starts great and runs great at cold temp, mechanic can’t get the problem to surface even after driving it around his lot. Neither one of us wants to drive it because we know it will die on us. He says he can’t work on it because the problem is not evident. Seems, after watching this, he could be checking a lot of things because with a code of PO300, there could be a lot of things causing it and the engine does run when cold to perform these diagnostics. I'm wondering if it has to be checked right after stalling? Trying to avoid the dealer ($135/hr). Wish I worked on cars.

      @@FixingWithPassion if it loses fuel pressure after shutoff it is most likely a bad check valve in your fuel pump(hopefully this, it doesn't need immediate fixing as its just a startup commodity) or a leaky injector which must be replaced immediately or you will have a visible leak in a line somewhere maybe a o ring whr lines go into injection.

    Nathan I need your opinion, I have a 2005 E36 6 cylinder Altima and it was getting P0300 so I caught a special on the spark plugs and coil packs and just went ahead and bought them. I changed the plugs and no difference other than a p0303 popped also so we know where to look. So I pulled the coil pack and closer inspection showed a hole burnt thru. So I changed all 6 coil packs as well. While I was in there I replaced the two sensors just to be thorough and it has been a while since anything other than oil change had been done. I cleared the codes and the car was running very good and no codes came back. The next day I start the car and starts hard, then test drive was very sluggish like starting in 2nd gear or something. Went back and checked and it had a new code pending whatever that means... an almost code I guess? P0171 bank one too lean. Quit for the day and came back the car won't start... turns over great but no fire. I went back to the sensor and noticed a problem with the sensor connector wire. Did not have one but pulled sensor, it was fine and put it back in then plugged in the connector and wire and tie wrapped it so it could not come loose. I ordered the connector and wire. Car starts right up and runs like a race car again. Get back from test drive and all is good, come back later and starts hard and runs sluggish again??? Like starting in second gear ? I cleared the codes and it is not posting any new codes, and one time it starts and runs great next time very sluggish? Several days later and still no codes but same issue? Any ideas what the heck is going on? Help! :)

    I do not keep cranking until I get max compression, I look at the first good compression stroke and the 5th stroke and compare all cylinders. a weak cylinder can build up to max after enough cranks, not a good procedure. A running engine will act differently. When I say first good, you may already be on a compression stroke and get half a pump so do it again. Also be aware of a weak battery and as you work your way around the cylinders they may be lower and lower based on weak battery. So of course I need to be able to see my compression gauge while I am cranking from the key to see the first and fifth strokes. DONT TRUST scanner codes, it is only a guide, prove out your problem by testing. The older the car, the less smart the computer is, its simply a fact of life.
