  • The Renault 21 GTS (90 hp baby ! ) is grinding some coffee under the hood.
    After some deep investigation we found that the alternator had bad bearings.
    It's a remanufactured part.....
    So, 14 euros later we have 2 ball bearings 6000 and 6203 from nsk and the rest is on video (for the most..). = )

    The ball bearings in alternators are really common parts used in many many applications of the industrial world.
    I think the better is to look in the alternator for the references and buy them at a local store like a tractor or mechanical /hydraulic parts seller.
    You can take the serial number/model /type on the exterior of the alternator and look in the datasheets of the manufacturer or a specialist but it's quicker lo look in the alternator i think.

  • @michaelovitch

    if the alternator is not charging your system (check the battery in itself first) you can look at your electrical connections first (ground and positive) they must be tight ,not corroded,not in bad shape or half stripped.
    Then you can check the brushes visually by removing them if necessary.
    Bearings failing only lead to noise and seizure of the alternator on its axis.

    Do you take in consideration that engines run at aroud under 3500 most of their life and the fact that bearings are not always equipped with side shields ?
    their country of origin ? (sand, dust,hot weather or cold temps etc... ?)

  • @michaelovitch
    @michaelovitch  Před 12 lety

    @MrSpan0701
    It's a remanufactured one.
    I've been obliged to change the bearings while it ran 20 000 km maximum
    Remanufactured parts are checked and the only parts changed or overhauled are the one that fail the remanufacturer specs.
    In this case i think the bearings have never been changed.
    But the tiny one 6000 model was really dead.the bigger was quite ok.
    My parents have a car on wich the alternator ran nearly 200 000 km it's a bosch brand.

    Here it's an alternator yes.
    I've changed a pressed wheel bearing and didn't need to press it thanks to a freezer and an oven.
    You can see in the vid on my channel.
    i've used heat and cold to expand and retract the parts fitted together.
    I have no press.

  • @michaelovitch
    @michaelovitch  Před 12 lety

    They were not from those brand but from Poland.
    it was a remanufactured alternator so i can't tell you how many kilometers they had.
    I personnaly would go for skf but nsk is good too.
    just install bearings with shields and they will last a long time.
    : )

  • @michaelovitch
    @michaelovitch  Před 11 lety

    The proof is that all the alternators are remanufactured..and in my case the bearings were not changed during this process so they failed.
    Cheap repair.

  • @michaelovitch
    @michaelovitch  Před 11 lety

    The alternator was working perfectly providing current and still does.
    Only the bearings were damaged,so it was noisy when it was turning.
    An alternator is never dead.
    A whole replacement is quite dumb and a commercial argument.
    There is a stator and rotor wich never wear out.
    Wear items are the set of brushes and bearings.
    The diodes can fail but it's rare.
    An alternator can do easily the life of a car.

  • @michaelovitch
    @michaelovitch  Před 11 lety

    In this case i would check basic stuff first : connection between alternator and battery. and body (ground)
    Then if all is well connected i would check brushes.
    Then the regulator.
    It's just diodes that can be changed on old models or replaced with regulator and brushes in early models on a single part)
    Then the welds of the stator on the inside plate (i don't know how it's called in your country)
    Most of the time a dead alternator giving 0 Volts have worn out brushes or a fried regulator.

  • @michaelovitch
    @michaelovitch  Před 12 lety

    @MrSpan0701
    Yes i will measure it and tell you.
    You need to know the diameter of the cranck pulley too or you will not be able to know the speed rotation of the alternator.
    the accessories pulley on the cranck are bigger than the alternator's one.
    I can tell you yet that the alternators can deliver their max output at around 2000 2500 engine rpm .
    They rotate at around 12 000 rpm when you're full throttle on a regular car.

  • @michaelovitch
    @michaelovitch  Před 11 lety

    No.
    The health of your system me be checked if the charge is not kept
    voltage must be checked first :
    -engine off : you should have 12.6 volts or a bit less(not under12Volts) 24 hours after a complete charge.
    -engine on with half throttle : you should have more than 12.6 (from 12.6 to 13.5 volts)
    Then if all that is ok and the battery can't keep charge that mean something is sucking juice all the time.
    bearings allow only the rotation movement.
    brushes are just contacts inside the alternator

      few bolts,half an hour of work, and you are sure to buy the correct ones,it's typed on them 6062 or 6000 for ex, it's a standard reference.

    I also hear the same grinding sound under the hood on my Nissan Xtrail. But it only produces that sound when above 60kph. You think that is still the culprit?

    • @michaelovitch
      @michaelovitch  Před 10 lety

      I doubt.
      You can try to reproduce the sound by getting the engine at the same rpm while in neutral.
      If the sound can't be heard,i would say it's a wheel bearing or an other rotating part.
      bearings noises are related to load on them and speed rotation.
      if you only her the noise above a certain speed and not rpm or gear engaged i would say a wheel bearing.
      try to switch in neutral while rolling above 60 kph the engine will idle and you will can detrminate if it's engine rpm related or elsewhere.

    2006 325i Alternator problems
    Hello,
    I have been having issues with my alternator. I heard all the "Why would you get a BMW?, Why do You still Have it? Why are you buying parts outside of BMW? I purchased a Remanufactured Valeo alternator on May 27Th, 2014 and a new battery the next day. Just a month ago I was driving in the hills of Hollywood coming home from work and my alternator light came on and I was still able to drive it home but with hard steering. I didn't bother checking my engine when I got home because I been through this before. The next morning I pop the hood and the tensioner pulley was unattached and belt was undone. . The bolt had completely snapped and was stuck inside. I had to call a mechanic to look it at it and he had managed to take it out there on the spot. The next day he ended up fixing the pulley and it was fine. I started noticing a spark like sound and a faint pumping noise coming from the alternator. I had managed to drive about a week and a half before I started to notice I was loosing power in the hills once again. The alternator battery indicator came off and on until I was about 30 seconds away from home when the ABS and whoe dash lights came on. The car died and I needed my brother to come help me push/park my car. I called the guy who fixed the pulley and he said it's probably a bad alternator and why would I buy a alternator from Pepboys? I said of course to save money and he said he would change it parts and labor 700$. I ended up going to Pepboys to check my charging systems and the first reading read bad battery and that my alternator was "fine" I came back the following week and checked it again, and the manager got involved and advised the mechanic to run the test again for a total of 4 printouts stating everything is running good. I called my mechanic and he checked my steering fluid which was completely empty. So I bought the dang fluid and After I got home I drove the car and it was still tight to steer. I then go back to Pepboys to get my alternator swapped out or tested and I had to drive to another location because they didn't have one in stock anywhere near me. when I finally obtained the new remainufactured alternator my mechanic installed it and it starting smelling like plastic and making a loud fan noise. My mechanic ended up telling me to get a new belt I then went back to Pepboys and come back installed the new belt and the Noise was still there. We ended up putting WD40 on the pulley of the alternator and it stopped making the noises. After the WD40 wears off the noise comes back. I had asked Pepboys to either refund or store credit, since it I have gone through 2 I'm scared to get a 3rd one. If any one of you guys can help with this issue I would greatly appreciate it.

    • @michaelovitch
      @michaelovitch  Před 9 lety

      Squeeky belt = loose belt or bad alignment on the pulleys.
      Check the belt tensionner,the size of the belt (if it's the good part)
      A too long belt could cause your tensionner to be unable to keep it under tension enough.
      a loud alternator is not normal.
      The steering pump issue is an other problem i think
      You may have a leak somewhere,it's not normal to add fluid in this system.

    • @hamsandwich9311
      @hamsandwich9311 Před 8 lety

      first off Rita you need to pay more attention to your fluids. check them every time you fill up. second, don't always take a mechanic's opinion. although they know what they're doing, they also know how to screw people over for jobs that are simple such as replacing an alternator. lastly, it sounds like you have/had a bad alternator pulley bearing. if you don't k or what that is look it up on Google. spraying wd40 on the pulley won't fix the problem because the bearing inside is ruined due to lack of grease. bearings are a cheap fix, although somewhat tough to do work on and time consuming. if you have the time it's not bad, as shown in the video.

  • @browsebot
    @browsebot Před 11 lety

    Let's assume that battery begins with full charge at 12.6v. After 24 hours, battery is at 12.5v, so battery is capable of maintaining charge. There are no parasitic drains on the battery. Once car is started, battery charge begins steadily dropping from 12.5, with no current going from alternator to battery according to multimeter. Battery charge continues dropping until car dies. What parts need to be replaced in order to get the alternator working again?

    • @michaelovitch
      @michaelovitch  Před 10 lety

      If the brushes are still ok and didn't dig too much in the copper ring i suggest you to just change the bearings and keep this alternator on the car.
      Buying a new one is not worth the money unless the car is still recent.
      Alternators last a very long time....you maybe will not need an other one soon.
      Unless you want to do it just to do it yourself.
      It's just an advice.
      How many kilometers /miles do you have on it ?

    • @michaelovitch
      @michaelovitch  Před 3 lety +1

      The small one was cut off,because i had no bearing puller.
      The big one wat punched out gently with a socket and a hammer.
      The best is a bearing puller,it's quite cheap to buy,and safe to use.

      I disassemble the alternator,then i look at the references on the bearings to buy the new ones.
      I buy the new bearings,i disassemble again and i replace them.
      Alternatörü söküyorum, sonra yenilerini almak için rulmanlardaki referanslara bakıyorum.
      Yeni rulmanları alıyorum, tekrar demonte ediyorum ve onları değiştiriyorum.

    I've done it all, repair a alternator bearing, what about the voltage regulator , just doing this don't help you in the long run, go and buy another alternator, I've been doing this for years and it don't work out in the end because working parts wear out and you have to take this off again to carry out the problems again
