    Hello guys,
    This is the video that I had in the making for a long time.
    In this one I explain how to change the front bearing in the alternators,
    which often gets seized ant stuck to the shaft.
    In the video there are different methods described depends what tools do you have.
    Hope you have enjoyed it and that you will subscribe to my channel.

    I came across your video while trying to replace bearings of my Bosch alternator. You were absolutely correct that the front steel shim is super hard to remove. I followed your instructions by shocking it, putting plenty of penetrating fluid and heating up the shim with a torch.
    Finally with two screw drivers and perseverance, the shim began to budge and came off eventually.
    The front bearing is relatively easy compared to the shim.
    Thanks for the tips.

    Amazing inovation a lot of thought has gone in how to get around problems when the shaft has rusted on to the bearing centre 🖒

    In my old mechanic days, I used to put the bearings in the freezer for an hour or two. After they are frozen and shrunk, they just drop in with no resistance... Good video mate!

    Really helpful video. Many thanks. I've been working today on a Valeo which was a pig because, as suggested, the inner retaining plate simply bends and tears when you try to press the shaft out. The bits of twisted metal are then wedged behind the bearing so you have to use a screwdriver through the front plate to bend the twisted metal out of the way so you can actually pull out the rotor shaft with the bearing still attached. I've done that but, as you can imagine, the bearing is well and truly corroded onto the shaft so tomorrow I'll be resorting to gas torch / vice / angle grinder. It's clear that Valeo do not want anyone to rebuild their alternators if they can help it. :-(

    I've just ordered a repair set to replace brushes/sliprings/bearing(s) on my E60.

    Very nice Video. Helped me plan my alternator repair (Audi Bosch). For those of You that have no press I choose a different approach. I warmed up the aluminum case of the alternator and then i was able to knock out the rotor together with the bearing :) I used a piece of wood and a standart hammer. Removing the shim was the biggest pain ;)

    Worth mentioning here for the Bosch alternator, if the front bearing is not rusted or slightly rusted the main shaft could be removed just by tapping it out. Spray lots of penetrating oil before attempting this. Try this first before going through the lengths of grinding the front bearing out. As we can see during reinstallation of the bearing later the main shaft could just slide into the front bearing.

    • @abubakarmohammed5464
      @abubakarmohammed5464 Před 5 lety

      Yeah, I lucked out also. There was no rust on mine and the shaft slid out with the core leaving the bearing where it was in the cover. I just doused the bearing with penetrating oil and will attempt to remove it later. Marks videos got me to this point.

    If you change bearings in any alternator,you have to put a socket on the nut that holds the pulley,and give it a firm tap with a hammer.
    This is done to loosen the bearings in their casings after being assembled.
    If this is not done you are risking bearings seizing from the friction.

However, with alternator cables disconnected, the sound disappeared completely. I bought a rebuilt bosch but it makes the exact same sound! Hope you could give your opinion

    • @SlayerAces
      @SlayerAces Před 6 lety +1

      Whistling or whining that ceases when the cables are disconnected sounds like a grounding issue. The way you describe it sounds similar to the way a car stereo amplifier will whine or whistle when you rev the engine if it's not properly grounded to the chassis.

  • @WestronicsIrl
    @WestronicsIrl  Před 11 lety +1

    Classic example of alternator not being tapped after bearing change.
    Bearing will seize after so long,situations like that are the cause of the"bad quality bearing myth",over 20 years of my work and thousands of bearings I have changed Ive never seen a "bad quality bearing",just bad fitment.
    All what it needs is a slight tap in the shaft that the nut holding the pulley goes (put socket over it),and that's it,it frees the tension.
    P.S.:After being assembled ofc.
