Regulator
The voltage regulator controls the amount of power distributed from the alternator to the battery in order to control the charging process. Regulators are designed with different functions and work depending on their specification.
Rectifier
The rectifier is used to convert current from alternating current (AC) to direct current (DC) during the charging process.
Rotor
The rotor is the spinning mass inside the alternator that rotates via the pulley and drive belt system. The rotor acts as a spinning electromagnet.
Slip Rings
The Slip rings are used as a means of providing direct current and power to the rotor.
Slip Ring End Bearing
The bearings are designed to support the rotation of the rotor shaft.
Stator
The stator consists of several coils of wire wound through an iron ring. The stator sits outside the rotor, when a magnetic field is created the electrical current is made.
Drive End Bearing
The bearings are designed to support the rotation of the rotor shaft.
Pulley
The pulley is connected to the rotor shaft and the drive belt system. Rotation created by the engine the drive belt system turns the pulley beginning the charging process.
Armature
The armature is an electromagnet, mounted on the drive shaft and bearings for support. It is a laminated soft iron core which is wrapped with numerous conductors loops or windings.
Brushes
The brushes run on a section of the commutator at the rear of the housing, making contact with the contacts of the commutator and conducting electricity.
Solenoid
The solenoid contains of two coils of wire that are wrapped around a moveable core. The solenoid acts as a switch to close the electrical connection and connects the starter motor to the vehicle's battery.
Plunger
The plunger works by using the connected vehicle battery and the solenoid to push the plunger forward, which engages the pinion.
Lever Fork
The lever fork is connected to the plunger so when the plunger is pushed forwards, so is the lever fork. This process then activates the pinion.
Pinion
The pinion is a unique combination of a gear and springs. Once the starter is engaged the gear is extended into the gearbox housing and is engaged with the flywheel. This spins the engine to begin the combustion process.
Field Coils
The housing holds the starter fields in the housing with screws. This can consist of two to four field coils connected in series. Energised by the battery this converts the coils into an electromagnet which then turns the armature. When the armature coils are powered a magnetic field is created around the armature.

I am surprised Bosch still make their alternators easily rebuildable with just a few hand tools. The slip ring assembly, front and back bearings, and the brushes are the items that wear with mileage. The rest rarely fail.
Very cleaver of how you removed the slip ring assembly taking advantage of the soft copper rings and plastic.
I repaired my Bosch alternator when I was in high school. It was a thin film resistor on a ceramic substrate of the regulator that was potted in silicone that failed. I carefully dissected the silicone block to get to the failed resistor and soldered in a through hole carbon film one. That was their late 70s alternator.

Hi thank you for this excellent video. Just curious to know. If i attached a ground wire from the back of the alternator casing, can i attach it to the 3 screws that are visible on the back casing? I want to ground the alternator back to the battery negative. Appreciate any advice. Thanks.

Hi Seboja. Great video. I have 1 question: what is the bearing puller you are using as I have never seen one like that before. It has thin legs and looks like a high quality puller. I found some similar pullers made by skf but they cost over 1000usd.

I have a Bosch alternator from a VW polo classic that failed to charge the battery. It would start charging after 7 to 8 minutes after the engine is running but one day it woudnt charge at all even after replacing the regulator.
Does that mean i have to replace the slip rings or there is something else that causes the problem.

hello my cusine have golf 3 alternator today hes baterry was discharged I know my self how to test alternator but never worked with bosch alternators for what is it used those 2 pins? 1 is for field wire but the other what is it? might it by ecu control or rpm metering pin? I did found 1 fuse was wubly so the dashboard lost contact and lights were not active . But still I might didnt check some things .So the pin lay out for such alternator confused my hoppe some one know what they are .

You buy parts for your alternator by the number of the alternator, you can't memorize it... where are you from, maybe I can help you see where it can be bought, but first you have to give the number from the alternator
But try and replace the diodes which have their electrodes welded in place. Stuff shown is easy.

You're right :D But it's not a bad floor because you're not standing directly on the concrete
A "twist" on this will be the Torx fasteners many manufacturers now use - they are un-openable. Nope - that won't work.. the torx bit will have twirled & nothing - NOTHING - you do will get them to open. You then get to chuck it in the bin due to 3 screws nothing will open bar you fancy welding on nuts - which you also can't as the screws are deeply recessed/the heat will ruin electrical stuff.. so for the sake of 3 stupid screws, the thing you know you could fix in a jiffy is irreparable - which is called "Progress". Welcome to "The New Normal"...
You should use small left hand twist drills in a cordless drill, they will cut the screw head off or will undo the screw most of the time providing you rotate the drill in a anti clockwise direction!
@@Bounty-Hunter69 I was replying to problems with opening security devices which are designed to make servicing difficult! The supplier you mentioned sells alternators & most of the parts needed to repair the same for as little as £5. I know which price I'd rather pay!

Uz originalne dijelove bosch sve te izađe sa rukama 120-130€ ,da autodoc valja ugrađivali bi ga kao bosch alternatore i anlasere,to su samo zamjenski dijelovi loše kvalitete od Autodoc-a

@@Bounty-Hunter69 Svaki alternator se stavlja na probni sto pre same popravke da vidim cujem i dobijem sve ostale podatke o njemu! Original Bosch se remontuje uspesno sa original delovima i dobija se garancija. Musterija moze da stavi original regler moze zamenski moze sta oce ima ponudu. Stator nema potrebe da se menja ako je ispravan!
