    Being such a good operator so as to chuck your drills on the fluted portion so it is out of alignment with the pilot hole and have to deflect to enter then watch it spin inside the chuck. Grabbing swarf with your bare hands, with chuck still turning, using a dull enough parting tool (hope you were wearing safety glasses for that one) it's even visible in the video to have one corner duller than a bent nail - Whoooeee; those are all ideas my apprenticeship failed to pass along and after retiring with over 50 years experience and cert's in the trades of general machinist, 4th class stationary engineer and heavy duty marine diesel mechanic I'm damn glad I never acquired those particular skills and was able to retire with all fingers intact. We'll see if you do as well, but I'm not like'n your chances.

    *never* put your hands anywhere near *anything* that moves on a lathe, it will pull you in and take off your arm without the rpm even dropping in the process.
    avoid taking off chips with your bare hands, you'll get cut or burned by a chip eventually
    the smooth part of the drill bit is the only part that gets pinched, this is for both alignment and so it stays in
    anything that shouldn't move needs to be as tight as you can make it
    that cutter might not last long, but it does work which is good enough for using on a single project. and stuff like this *is* taught, making specialized tools for a specific purpose because they either don't exist or you don't own one is something people do know how to do.
    next time you walk up to your lathe, be safe. one bad mistake can kill you or ruin your body before you even know it happened.

  • @oktavious1137
    @oktavious1137 Před 3 měsíci +20

    You’re making a button cutter. Everyone teaches you about it if you are properly trained. Making specialty cutters is 1st or 2nd year apprentice work.
    Secondly your cutter is very sub optimal. Your cutoff face was jagged as heck which means your cutting edge is not perfectly level with your stock. That combined with your ragged edge since you didn’t stone or finish any surface on your cutter is why your surface finish is terrible.
    Surface grind the top and bottom flat surfaces of your cutter and your results will vastly improve.

    • @orionoutdoorsandworkshop5617
      @orionoutdoorsandworkshop5617 Před 3 měsíci +3

      as oktavious said. center the cutoff, it looks way high by the face of that stock. slow the feed rate down, use coolant. a blue shaving or chip indicates your work is too hot, this actually RUINS the tool. you will not make too many pieces with that tooling if you keep doing this. (that cutoff is dull as well)
      im sure people are not trying to be too critical. but it is painful to see these vids because it teaches people who dont know any better to do unorthodox, downright dangerous practices. i dont understand why we are seeing so many videos lately from this part of the world where its obvious these people need immediate remedial machining and basic metallurgy training, safety training and safety equipment.

    Any bolt even the heat treated kind cannot be used to cut metal.
    I had seen a comment about bolts not being heat treated I had no idea what it might have been in reference to but this is not possible.
    I realize it appears that it is possible who knows what that bolt may have been made out of but still it should not be possible even at this abnormally low RPM.
